Day 9: WHY I TRAIN.
Ok, so I’ve been a pro wrestler for 5 years and I love it. But I’ve also had anger issues my entire life and wrestling did nothing to change that. Growing up I got in a lot of fights either not taking shit from people bigger than me (I was 5’ and 50kg till I was 17) or standing up for people who couldn’t stand up for themselves.
I briefly dated a PT/fitness model who I’d known for years and she was just so positive and carefree that it kind of rubbed off on me and when she left the scene so did that feeling (which was not ok)…
But her dedication to her craft (training everyday, wind, rain, hail or shine) had rubbed off on me and after considering it for a year or more I decided I’d persue MMA. So I went to my gym and spoke with Mitch (my Kru/instructor/coach/friend) about training, so anyway I knew of this tournament coming up and had 6 weeks to prep (yes I’ve only been fighting for 2 months now) well Mitch and I just went at it and sparred round after round to clean up all the skills I’d gained from wrestling and growing up. Well 6 weeks later I entered 3 tournaments in 1 day and walked away with two silver medals.
3 weeks later I’m so much calmer, I’m happier and I could never go back to life without training. I love to fight, I love to train and I love the guys who train at my gym, we’re truly like a family.
It’s the only time I’ve truly been calm and relaxed without someone else’s help, but it also pushes me and makes me want to be better.
I’m learning Muay Thai, Crazy Monkey Defense and BJJ, which on top of my wrestling is going to be shit loads. Furthermore in security it opens up other jobs for me as I want to move to personal security/bodyguard work down the track. Training and fighting has drastically changed my life in 2 months and I’m all the better for it.
