Pro-tip for first-time furnace tenders
From someone who went from parent's house to apartment complex to homeowner, if you become responsible for cleaning/replacing a furnace filter, practice taking the cover on and of like...a bunch when you move in, wait a few days, and do it again.
When I first moved in the house had a unit older than my own father (now 56 years old) and the cover would just fall off if you touched it. It died in a brilliant accident caused by the man who came to repair it a year after I bought the house*. The new furnace requires me to use a screwdriver as a pry bar to get the cover off when I need to clean the filter
