Dungeon crawl - cooperative drabble
Posted by Leila ( @dancing-dagger ), on behalf of Cloud ( @sacredscar ) and Rinoa ( @ibisangelus )
LEILA: "Haaaail, Rinnie!" The prodigy's bunkmate calls out from a good hundred feet away. "Check it out, I found us a ringer fer' our expedition! Fresh off the boat, he is, and I found 'im first!" She gestures to the blonde stranger walking beside her.
CLOUD: The taller blond followed along. Lost, but trying not to look as such. He was somewhat tall, but aside from the long wide sword that was slung on his back one of his more distinctive features was the wild spiky blond hairstyle he sported that was reminiscent of a chocobo.
RINOA: "Oh, Leila! I'm pretty nervous - first dungeon we'll be going through. Who's this? I'm Rinoa by the way! Nice to meet you." Side to side holding out her hand to greet the other, then scanning the dungeon itself. She had to admit, she was a bit intimidated but she wasn't alone and that, made her feel a bit at ease. Rinoa, a 5'3 heighted young girl, ebony colored hair with caramel streaks, blue duster outfit and black boots perfect for traveling. By her side, an aussie Canine - Angelo, was present as well. "My partner is here too."
LEILA: The brash ex-con was only 5'5" herself, but carried herself like she was a full foot taller. Her blue-violet hair was tied back into a ponytail, and she was dressed from head to toe in black garb that seemed more suited for a ninja than a pirate. Unable to resist, she dashes over to the faithful canine and scratches him on the head, as she gestures to their newcomer. "Introducer yer'self, sir!"
CLOUD: His vibrant blue eyes would gaze down at the two women, standing at 5'9". Cloud would rest a gloved his on his waist as he watched the pirate tend to the dog. Looking back at Rinoa he would finally answer, "It's Cloud."
RINOA: "Nice to meet you, Cloud. Well - should we plan how we're going to navigate through or just go right through it?" She was a bit new to the dungeon crawling experience, angelo let out a content whimper to Leila's affection of approval and afterwards walked to Rinoa's side again.
CLOUD: "If one of you want to keep an eye on the map, that's fine. I can be out front. Luckily I can take a hit."
LEILA: "I'd have been a shark's banquet years ago if I didn't know how ta' work a map." Showing her work, Leila unrolled a hard-parchment layout of the underground, cobbled from a full day of interviewing the campground staff. "Rin, think you can watch our backsides?"
RINOA: "Yes- I used ranged attacks so I'll hang back while you guys take front. Angelo will be here with me too, she's pretty good about covering me as well. " Rinoa, specialized with her pinwheel - working that of a mechanical boomerang, a ranged fighter with magic in tact. "I also can use magic, so I'll be support too."
CLOUD: He nodded lightly before turning toward the cave's entrance. "Good. I can try and draw attention so whatever support you both want to give will do fine."
LEILA: "Well, then, we got a plan, we got the firepower, let's not waste time! Cloud, sir, lead the way!"
RINOA: "Right, lead the way, sir!"
CLOUD: Rubs the back of his neck lightly before pointing ahead. "Alright, let's mosey then," he declared before stepping forward. Being in the lead, Cloud was sure to keep one hand on the hilt of his blade. While he was sure in his ability, he was also being cautious as to what might jump out at the trio.
RINOA: Carefully trotting behind while her canine kept her senses about, she followed closely to scan the area and make sure there wouldn't be any sudden surprises. The dungeon was creepy, really creepy - even giving her the heebie jeebies.
LEILA: Upon stepping into the dank depths of Queensdale's underground, the first thing they would come across is an antechamber, with some old supply crates nearby. It seemed someone had tried- and failed- to set up some kind of operation in this place. Without a second though, Leila shoves her boot into the broadside of one of the cracked wooden containers, pulling out a few medicinal supplies. All in all, her haul includes an extra Phoenix Down, two potions, and a turbo-ether. "Rin, I'm designating ya' to be pack mule regarding our potions n' such." She passes the various goods back to her partner, then continues along Cloud's careful lead.
RINOA: Stemming up a salute, she nodded in approval, following the task to pack the stuff for storage.
LEILA: "Okay. The way I see it, we've got three targets in this place. First, we need to hit the southern end of the dungeon and do a bit of diving in the lagoon below. There's a number of enchanted powders lined through the sediment, somethin' fer all of us. The second involves a visit to the nasty troll that runs this place, his chamber be' far to the west. Then we head back to the central part of this here labyrinth, where we can collect our last few pieces and get the hell outta here. Cloud, head through... that doorway, turn forty-five degrees right, then walk in a straight line, that should get us to the water."
RINOA: "How.. Fun. But, the faster we get this done - the faster we can leave this eery place. "
CLOUD: "Alright." Turning back ahead the blond would start to head through the doorway. Following Leila's orders he would turn just enough before heading in a straight line. With his hand still on his sword's hilt he would look here or there. The hairs on his neck felt like they were standing on end.
LEILA: Luckily, these depths seemed devoid of the sorts of wildlife that lay in the darker places of her own home. The light of her torch revealed little of concern beyond a smattering of insects or small lizards- it seems the larger specimens that lived topside banished their smaller brethren to these depths. As they walked, they would spot a foyer on one side, leading to a wide-open section of the cavern. "That's our stop, the archway over on port. We turn here."
RINOA: Looking over head to the direction, she waltzed up to the duo and remained at their side. But, she very eagerly wanted to retreat from the reptiles remembering an experience back home when two were summoned on her by someone to attack her, almost killing her.
CLOUD: Cloud would head over toward the foyer as Rinoa kept a bit closer to them. He didn't seem to mind it. The tiny lizards weren't something to worry about luckily. Making his way to the more open area Cloud would try to look up toward the ceiling to see if he were still able to see in the dim light.
LEILA: At this point, the décor of the cavern would change from old ruins to natural depths, with ancient stalactites pointing downward to the deep pool of groundwater some ten feet below them. "Alright, you two, this be' our first target. See those faint glowin' bits beneath the water's surface? It's all natural sand, caked with leftover magic used over the centuries by man and beast alike. Ain't no magical spice to our handiwork without a good load of this stuff. I need you two to be my eyes and ears above- I'm goin' in ta' get it."
RINOA: Nods once more, after hearing Leila's explanation, readying her pinwheel weapon and further observing their surroundings while sticking close to Cloud for support and backup.
CLOUD: For now Cloud would finally take the large sword from his back and stand at the ready. "I guess we'll have to take turns getting what we need."
LEILA: "Nonsense, I'm the water-baby here. We'll need that big-ass sword of yours when it comes time to pay trollface a visit, so it's best ya' stay fresh. Seeya in a few!" Leila hands her torch to Rinoa, then falls backwards, gracefully slipping under the surface of the groundwater with hardly a splash. She's blind down here, with only the lights from the sediment below to guide her- but a quick douse of Haste and Berserk spells on her person would give her all the strength and speed she needed to zip effortlessly through the deep. She'd need that speed, too, as there was company on her tail. It seemed nobody in camp had known about the massive cephalopodic creature- read: GIANT FUCKING OCTOPUS- that now reached out to make the sailor its next meal!
CLOUD: "What!?" Cloud would turn quickly now, bringing his attention to the waters behind him.
RINOA: "...! OVER THERE." Rinoa began to cast protect on both, then hitting it with a MELTDOWN spell to ensure vitality reduction. Angelo awaiting for limit break commands near their sides.
LEILA: Leila couldn't see anything, but she certainly knew a submerged scuffle when she felt it. Feeling the heat and displacement of spells being thrown above her (even -on- her! Good eye, Rin!), she entrusted its swift and painful death to her allies, and focused on putting as much distance between her and the incident as possible. Porpoises would turn green with envy at the way the magically-enhanced siren slips through the water, gathering the various colored piles of glowing dust into their respective sacks. The creature was still on her tail, but slowed already by Rinoa's swift reaction.
RINOA: She casted another spell this time, Thundaga, given the water element the creature was in.
CLOUD: With the beast in sight, Cloud would crouch down to the ground. He would wait until after Rinoa casted her next spell before launching himself into the air with a leap. Holding his sword with the tip pointing down, he would aim the best he could to land on it's massive body and plunge his sword into it.
LEILA: Unbothered, fat, and happy in its life of picking off small-fry rodents and lizards, the big fish in this small pond was hardly a match for two seasoned fighters. Rinoa's assault had paralyzed it in place, and the might of Cloud's greatsword ran the hapless creature clear through. Shaking off the pain of the briefly-electrified water, Leila packaged up the last of the magical dust, and made for the surface, using a pair of steel pitons to shimmy her way back up to the platform. Once there, she immediately looked over the side for her attacker, only to see it freshly-smoked, and utterly conquered by the newcomer. "Oh, you're just worth every penny, ain't ya, Cloud?" She grinned, then gave her bunkmate a sopping-wet hug. "And you! The hell'd ya' learn ta shoot like that? I felt that protect spell from twenty feet away!!"
RINOA: "Oh? Really? I mean I've had my fair share of battles but I'm still working on it. I'll be a pro in no time! You guys are great though."
CLOUD: Standing up straight carefully Cloud would pull the massive blade out of the dead creature. Careful not to fall into the water. Placing his sword back on his back Cloud did his best to jump off of the thing and back onto land. It wasn't as graceful as his attack as Cloud would stumble a little on his landing.
LEILA: "Both of ya' keen, or do we need to catch our breath first?" Leila grinned, as she tossed a sack of magical dust at each of her companions- proper enchanting ingredients for armor and wands, respectively.
RINOA: "I'm good. You, Cloud?"
CLOUD: He shook his head. "I'm fine. Not to be mean, but so far it's been easy."
LEILA: "Good, let's hope it stays that way." She cocked her head playfully, as she retrieved their map. "Okay, see that bridge over there? It's apparently made of old rotted shit, let's not use it. Instead, let's double back to the room after the antechamber. There's another path there that will take us right to big ugly's doorstep."
CLOUD: "You mean the troll?" he asked while propping his hand on his waist again. "We might as well get it over with."
LEILA: "Lead the way, Cloud!" Leila bellowed, as she wrung the excess water out of her hair and clothes.
CLOUD: "No problem," he said before taking the lead once more. With already trudging through the area once before Cloud seemed less on edge. It was only when they would eventually pass the antechamber and begin the new path that he would resume to holding the hilt of his sword once more.
LEILA: Going north past their original way in, the room would funnel into a narrow hallway, in which a veteran soldier like Cloud would likely sense something off. Small holes would be vaguely noticeable amdist the cavern's floor and walls- deliberately drilled for some sort of purpose.
CLOUD: Cloud might have been a veteran, but he did fall victim to tunnel vision at times. With him being so focused on getting to the troll he failed to notice the holes on the floor until he stepped down on one. It was only by the grace of him being a SOLDIER that the blond would jerk back, most likely into either Leila or Rinoa before a spear shot up out of the ground to stab him.
LEILA: "Shit! Sorry, I... there was NO way of knowing someone would plant this kind of garbage in here... okay... focus, focus... the troll is just ahead, all we need is a way of keeping a light touch on the floor on the way there... either of ya' got any ideas?"
CLOUD: Cloud frowned at the trap. "I don't think I can keep much of a light touch with as heavy as my weapon is."
LEILA: "Then, we go with option B. Cloud, Rin', in about ten seconds, I'm going to cast Haste on all three of us. Then we break for the troll's door. An entrance like that might give us the edge we need to take the bastard down quick. You two game?"
CLOUD: The soldier gave a nod. "I'm ready when you are."
LEILA: "Rin? You too?"
CLOUD: "You ready to run? As long as you run with Haste casted, we should be fine."
LEILA: "No time fer' lollygagging!" The pirate made her move, placing her hands on her fellow explorers, and infused them both with the standard time-dilation spell. "LET'S MOVE! MOVE! MOVE!" Leila dashed off, easily zipping past the spike-traps, her footsteps too light and quick to set them off.
CLOUD: With the spell placed on him there was no time to waste. Seeing as Rinoa never gave him an answer Cloud would default to scoop up the young later before chasing after Leila across the spikes.
RINOA: Moving as fast as she can, she kept up with the others, quickly casting Haste and Aura on herself while launching her Angel Wing mode.
LEILA: The security system foiled, there was nothing now between the trio and their quarry but a pair of double doors, which were swiftly done in by a shoulder-charge from the speedy buccaneer. Inside was the giant cave-troll, exactly as promised.
RINOA: "Alright, let's go get ugly brains over there." Waiting by the other two, in Angel Wing limit break, casting a few Protect and Shell spells on them.
LEILA: Leila ran right at the massive beast, her enhanced speed making her near-uncatchable by the lumbering monster's fists. When she nears its feet, she fell into a slide, and gave it a faceful of Scourge XVI- a mighty blast of poisonous force that knocked it back on its heels. Leila slides through the troll's legs, and tumbles to the other side of the chamber.
CLOUD: After passing the trap Cloud was sure to put Rinoa back down on the ground. Without warning he watched as Leila took off ahead at the troll. Arming up once more, Cloud charges head-on to draw the beast's attention away from Leila. "Over here, ugly!"
RINOA: Standing from a distance, she casted Meltdown on the troll, then followed with a Scan to expose its weaknesses.
LEILA: The troll swung at Leila and missed wide, the split-second enough to unleash a Blind spell right between its eyes. Seeing her new mercenary pal make his move, she leapt upward, bounded off the stunned beast's shoulder, and cleared the way for him to do his thing. Not a moment too soon, either- had she stayed where she was, she might have caught some of the blowback from Rinoa's powerful magical assault!
CLOUD: Rushing forward Cloud would lunge forward suddenly. Rushing up toward the stunned troll Cloud would slash upward at a diangle. His sword cutting deeply into the beast.
LEILA: "Rin! Now's yer chance! Unleash Hell on that giant pile'a shit!!"
RINOA: She goes into a frenzy, casting FLARE - HOLY, AND A FEW BLIZZAGA SPELLS.
CLOUD: Cloud stood there as the fury of magic flew through the air. Even he wasn't going to get in the middle of that mess. "Just. Wow," was all Cloud could get out as he looked back at Rinoa. "Impressive."
LEILA: Just.. stops, and stares at the fireworks show. Her best spell was a pop-gun compared to this. "Wow, Rin... I... am REALLY glad I made friends with ya'..." The troll hardly stood a chance, and was reduced to a charred, ashy ruin once the smoke from Rinoa's maelstrom dissipated.
RINOA: Her body pulsed, throbbing and out of breathe- the magic, taking it's toll on her body with markings still glowing around her skin. "Yeah... huff - huff -"
CLOUD: "Do you need to rest?" He placed his sword back on his back. "Did we bring any Ether?"
LEILA: Leila shoves an ether into the exhausted mage's hands, and pats her on the back. "Get what ya' need! This monster be' soul-bound to these chambers! It'll pull its ugly ass together in a few minutes, and we do NOT wanna be here when it does!"
CLOUD: "Then we better grab our loot and move on."
RINOA: Using a gravity spell, she hovered the loot to her side, still in her magic beserk mode. "Let's go... I need a moment. "
LEILA: "Cloud, think ya' can guide her the rest of the way? Nothin' left but a chest to loot and we can make sail."
CLOUD: "I could carry her if need be. But then my hands would be full."
RINOA: "No... I'll be okay." There was a small bark from a distance, as Angelo used a small recover command to allow Rinoa to use some energy to keep up with escape.
CLOUD: Giving the young girl a concerned look, Cloud would eventually pull away before he would start to head out again.
LEILA: "Oh, you are one good doggy, ain't ya?" Leila pats the faithful creature on the head, then refreshes everyone's Haste spells, and takes off across the spike traps once more. "We passed our last stop on the way to the lagoon! The sealed door on starboard, just before the cave!"
CLOUD: "Understood!" With the Haste spell refreshed Cloud would run back across the floor trap back toward the entrance.
RINOA: Runs out with a small energy boost from the recovery, Angelo faithfully running by her side. Once they made it to safety, she ruffled her canine on her fur.
LEILA: "Cloud!" She commanded, as she ran. "When we get there, we'll see two stone squares! You n' I will jump on them at the same time, that'll open the door! Ya' follow?"
CLOUD: "I follow!" He called back.
LEILA: She looked back to make sure they hadn't lost Rinoa and Angelo in their haste. Once she confirmed that her party was still intact, Leila leapt gracefully into the air, landing in a kneeling pose on one of the two pressure plates.
CLOUD: Unlike Leila, Cloud wasn't about leaping gracefully. When he jumped it was only to get to point B. There Cloud would land with a soft thud.
LEILA: Once the two heroes found their marks, the door to the treasure room would slide open with the dull roar of ancient machinery. The giant chest inside awaited them.
CLOUD: Clenching a fist Cloud would smirk. "Finally. Time to get our loot and get out of here."
RINOA: Runs to their sides, keeping an eye out. "I'm able to keep look out."
LEILA: "Good, then let's hurry." There was another dull roar. This one was definitely not machinery. The troll was already undergoing its painful regeneration.
CLOUD: "On it!" Without another word Cloud would take off for the treasure.
LEILA: Leila followed, and the two of them gathered up all of the Lodestones they would need amongst the three of them. "That should be all! Let's bail before that green fucker wants another go!"
RINOA: "On it! Angelo, let's go, girl!" She whistled for the dog to follow them, after helping gather the lodestones.
CLOUD: With the stones gathered, Cloud would wait for the ladies to run ahead before bringing up the rear. Gaia forbid something attacked them as the trio made their escape.
LEILA: There was a pounding at the far wall. It seemed the troll had regained its fists, and was in no mood to navigate its own labyrinth for a shot at the three invaders who'd devastated it. "The portal up ahead, that's our ticket home! Full speed ahead!"
RINOA: She casted Haste on the three to ensure their speed, as they escaped the dungeon before the troll could halt their movements.
CLOUD: With the magic of Haste cast on him, Cloud would run even faster than he was already going. He made a point to hold his arms out if he were going to pass either Rinoa or Leila, ready to pull them along if need be.
LEILA: Leila could easily have cleared the portal herself, but chose instead to allow herself be whisked away by Cloud's powerful arms, letting out a little squee as he scoops her up.
RINOA: She took Cloud's other arm, even with the haste still intact, allowing herself to be scooped up, with Angelo in her arms too.
CLOUD: With each of the ladies tucked under an arm it only spurred Cloud to run even harder. Feeling the pressure of if he even tripped that they could get hurt. As it sounded the troll was getting close Cloud would toss each Leila and Rinoa through the portal before lunging through it himself.
RINOA: Being lunged full force into the portal, she made sure she held Cloud's hand to help him chain with her and Leila through the exit.
LEILA: "Whee!" Leila laughed as she was thrown to safety, rolling to her feet and checking to be sure everyone- even the dog- had made it to safety.
CLOUD: Falling through the portal out the other end, Cloud would land nearly on his face with a thud. "Everyone make it?" He gave the two a tired smile.
LEILA: "Hell yeah! A bonnie' job we did, too! Heh, feel sorry fer' the next bunch ta' go down there..."
RINOA: She landed with a small thud after rolling for a minute, then sat up on her butt, catching her breath. Angelo sat next to her, nuzzling her hair to make sure Rinoa wasn't harmed from her magic dosage. A small giggle erupted from her at Leila's confident remark. "You have a funny way of saying things, but thanks to you too - we all made it out safe and sound. And I think Angelo made a new friend too." The dog let out a small approved bark at Leila, running up to her.
LEILA: "Alright, you two, go handle yer' business. If ya' like, Cloud, ya' can meet back at our bunk. I've still got a bottle from me' private reserve left over. We'd be honored to have ya' sir."
CLOUD: He blinked, surprised, but nodded. "Alright, but careful what you ask for."
LEILA: "Oh, really, now?" She retorts, with a raised eyebrow.
CLOUD: He stood up and dusted his pants off a bit. "I'm really good at not getting drunk."
LEILA: "CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!"

“Here be’ the place.”
The noonday sun hung over the forest as the three adventurers stood before the wide cavern mouth. “I’ve only gone as far as the stairway below. Figured I’d best get some backup before proceedin’ any further.”
Leila had come loaded for bear. Once again, she was covered up in black garb, thief’s gloves, and a tied-back ponytail. Her trusty daggers sat at her sides, and strapped to her back were a pair of long-barreled pistols. Various healing items were stored away in pouches on her belt, and her rope knife sat coiled, attached to her hip.
“No tellin’ what we’ll find in the depths here. Either of ya’ gettin’ any second thoughts?”
