Here's the finished catalog covers I gave you a little preview of before. All imagery was created/photographed by me and tied together using illustrator/Photoshop. This is only a proposal and I doubt they'll pick it but my goal was to show them a style with their name I know they haven't even thought of trying.

Problem & Final Print

I had a phone call off the printers to say no bleed or crop marks were showing up on the files I sent. After sending different files all Wednesday morning, I decided to find the center myself as no other group members replied. Following getting lost around the city I managed to find the printers and I sat down with the designer Holly and sorted the file problems and put it to the guys to print for us.

For the final print we were discussing paper weight and paper types, we decided to go for a matte paper between 170-190gsm due to us having to fold the paper.

Visiting the print center as I got to see digital printing on a large scale. It made me see little elements you don’t necessarily see/think when printing. They were really helpful and they couldn’t help me enough. I will defiantly ne using their services again!

Print

I printed out the final image on Satin Paper at A3. I absolutely love the print, I believe it communicates the brief effectively and my concept. The detail and the atmosphere that it portrays is wonderful, giving the image an unbiased photographic stance allowing the viewer to analyse the image to interpret the events in their personal opinion. The exposure on print is perfect, I thought that due to the dark background I may have had issues regarding the brightness and exposure, however, it is just how I wanted it. I think I will give this print to my grandad for his 80th birthday.

Final Evaluation

For my final print I went through a long decision process to get there at first I started to think about the differences from back home as the city of Leeds is busier. After mind mapping my ideas were to capture people in the street as they were missing things being caught up in their busy lives within the city, however as I was mid-way through my project I had an idea whilst out collecting further ideas about the elderly. How they seemed outnumbered, there was many young people rather than older, people ignored them and carried on with their fast paced lives. I saw people brushing past the older people as they were slower I found this an interesting concept for my project. I decided to focus on the loneliness and the feelings of neglect and being invisible to the youth. People in Leeds are caught up in their busy lives and I wanted to show a different perspective. I was heavily influenced by other photographers I researched such as Alexey Titarenko, Danny Santos and William Klein all for different reasons. I started looking at Titarenko first and exploring ‘city of shadows’ I liked the fact he explored people becoming shadows and becoming a pattern in society of the depression. His work influenced me a lot with how I chose to shoot along with Danny Santos’ work which was around the point I decided to shoot in rainy bad weather as it fit my theme very well with how I could show the loneliness and sadness by the black and white with the dullness of the day and the weather.

Changing my idea to the elderly meant my decisions when shooting my films were slightly different for example choosing which parts of the images I wanted to be the focal point and in focus as for each image I changed the way I wanted to shoot. In this project I learnt how to use the Mamiya medium format camera and light meter and a different way of developing images with LCA’s techniques.

The overall printing process was lengthy it took me a while and many test strips to figure out the correct exposure for the final print, deciding between a 32 second exposure and a 42 second. Also figuring the correct filter to use as I tried with 3 and 3.5 after adjusting many times as it was going wrong and was ending up too dark or light I settled on 38 seconds and the filter on 3.5 and I learnt how to burn in which I enjoyed. These settings gave my image a nice contrast and had a lot of detail within the image on the people and the floor so in the end I feel my print was successful along with my 10x8 images. My print answers the brief well as it’s what I see within my surroundings and the issues here, if I was to complete this project again I would possibly experiment further with slow shutter speed as it was my initial intention for my final print but I felt my images reflect what I wanted to portray better. I overall I’m happy with the results of my final print and the project and it conveys my intentions well.

This is my final 16x12 print scanned in (without borders and some of the image cut off) 

When taking this image I went specifically looking for people with umbrellas and mainly was taking photos of older couples to convey the lonely feeling in the city that the elderly feel as life is moving on around them a lot faster. When I was developing the image in the darkroom I had a lot of issues with the exposure times and the choice of filter as shown below with the three test strips i did

the first was overall too dull and dark however i liked the detail in the umbrella so i decided to play around with the filter settings and have it at just over 3.5

that i found to work perfect for the blacks in the image so i then i played around with the times and decided between 32 and 40 

this was 38 seconds which i felt worked perfectly and i knew i would have to burn in the sky and corners of the image give extra detail to the floor, buildings and sky.

in the end a 38 second exposure and a 3.5 filter gave me the result i wanted. overall i feel my print was very successful and i think that it portrays what i wanted to say.

My process for deciding to print this was looking at my contact sheets and 10x8 seeing which ones i loved the most and the one i felt was the one to show my project the best and this was the one. i found it slightly hard to choose between my few images id picked out as i loved them all and wanted them all to be my final print but in the end i just preferred the contrast and the whole look and feel of this image. i just wanted to convey the idea of the city growing and developing around the elderly whilst they’re being left behind and only have the other older people to depend on. i’m proud of the outcome and if i was to re do this project i would create more of a series following on from this final image of a similar theme with the elderly couples and the bad weather.
