NEW FIC!

Dean had entered the empty with nothing but blind confidence and half a plan. How hard could it be? It had been over a century since he got here. Dean is more than half mad from the isolation and he barely remembers who he's searching for. And he has forgotten Cas' face.

He ran.

Dean used to worry that the Empty would catch up to him. He understood now. She… it? The Empty was back at rest. He would have thought endless running would make waves, but decades passed and there was not a whisper to suggest she was there. He wondered if it was because he wasn't technically hers. He was human… or at least was a long time ago.

Now he was becoming nothing and no one.

He supposed an eternity steeped in nothing would do that.

There was only running. From the second he slipped through the inky maw into the Empty, he was running. Hours slipped into centuries and still, running. It is all he could do.

Now he was... he couldn't imagine what he looked like. Twisted limbs and rotting flesh probably. Or maybe he had been here so long he was dripping with ink. Perhaps he didn't exist at all.

There wasn't enough fire to forge his soul into anything here. This was easily enough torment to have demonized him if he were in hell, but here didn't have the variety of damnation. There, your whole world was fire and agony. Here he didn't have a world. He hardly remembered what the world was. He'd been running in the nothing seven times as long as he ever existed in a world; Hell, purgatory, and on earth combined. Those memories were barely in his infancy, but then again, who could really tell anymore?

The only reason they shined so bright was that there was nothing that really followed them. His entire life was just running. Right now he couldn't even grasp the concept of stopping enough to remember if it was possible. If he found what he was looking for maybe he could learn again. He would fix this. He… Cas. Cas could fix this. He could teach him how to stop and help him learn himself again. He doesn't know how, but Cas could fix this.

Dean delves into his memory, pulling up his brother telling him words he hoped were still somehow a close approximation of English.

"My entire life, you've protected me…please... put the gun away…"

Sam's dead. The thought hits him in the face the same it always does. Sam's been dead a long time. He can't remember. Sometimes when he thinks about that, he sees Sam get stabbed in the back. Sometimes he sees Sam get his throat ripped out or shot. He doesn't know which one is real and which are made up.

"Saving people, hunting things. The family business."

Dean wonders how many of his memories are made up.

Not Cas. Cas is real. Cas could fix things.

He had to find Cas.

"Dean Winchester is saved."

Not yet. You have to save me.

He ran.

Here it is, y'all. The 15x18 fixit, 14 months later. Somehow I managed to craft this fic way before the climactic events of November 5th—yet it's somehow just as relevant.

Dean rolls over, stretching a hand over to the other side of the bed.

Cold.

He sits up, rubbing his eyes.

Cas must be up then, and probably has been for a while.

Dean smiles. Makes sense. Guy doesn’t sleep.

He heads down the hallway and into the kitchen, expecting Cas to be sitting there with coffee, smiling at him in that soft way.

But it’s empty.

He checks the war room. Observatory. Even doubles back to the room Cas used to call his. Garage. He calls six times before he bangs open the door to Sam’s room.

“Cas is gone,” Dean says bluntly. Sam lowers his gun once he sees it’s Dean, rubbing at his eyes. “Okay, but...” He blinks. “Isn’t that kind of what he does?”

“He hasn’t answered any of my calls,” Dean growls. “And this time, it’s—” he cuts off, wishing he could snatch the words back.

Sam tilts his head.

“It’s... what, Dean?”

Dean is silent, looking down at the floor.

“Oh.”

Dean swallows.

“Oh,” Sam says again.

Dean lowered the phone and took a hesitant step forward, his bare foot sinking into the damp, rotting carpet. “Cas, what’s wrong? I don’t … You’re not making any sense.”

“I have something for you,” Cas said, and this time it came as a whisper in a language Dean didn’t know, yet somehow understood.

Dean froze in his tracks, his hand hovering just over the doorknob. He wanted so desperately for it to be Cas on the other side of this door, but he knew deep down that something was horribly, horrifically wrong.

The rise of a new, hands-off God has unintended consequences, and the promise of free will reaches further than anyone intended. In the absence of the one who’d locked them away, and beneath the cracked and rusted surface of the Midwest, an Old God stirs. Here, death is not the peace you’re looking for, and there’s one more person left to save.

Chapter 4: One is the Loneliest Number

Sam stumbled down the hallway, his head throbbing in his skull. Go to the kitchen, get some water and some painkillers, hopefully go back to bed and sleep off the hangover: it was a plan. Not an epic ‘save-the-world’ plan, but a plan nonetheless.

Faint snoring filled his ears and he paused, frowning in confusion. He’d passed Dean’s and Jack’s bedrooms, and both doors had been closed. And neither room was in the direction of the snoring. He followed the sound, the snoring getting louder as he entered the library.

The tables and chairs were empty; however, an open laptop rested atop the table closest to the giant telescope. Coming around the table, Sam found the source of the snoring. Dean slept on the floor, using a mostly empty whiskey bottle as a pillow. A couple beer bottles littered the floor around him along with another empty bottle of whiskey.

A glance at the laptop screen revealed footage from the cameras in the dungeon. The room seemed empty. Whatever footage Dean had been looking for likely had been played earlier.
