#finally learning about comix

Hey any friends who followed me for writing purposes: would you be interested if I started posting my shelved fantasy romance novel aka “Bear Book” as an original work on Ao3?? I’m in a bit of a block and the stimulation/encouragement might help...

I started it way back in 2013 but the majority time I worked on it was from 2017-2020, more or less concurrent to when I wrote and posted my BotW Zelink fanfiction. In my opinion, they have had major stylistic influences on each other, especially the way I describe settings and the theme of finding agency within the shackles of fate.

I’m quite certain that I will never trad or even self publish it because I’ve now recognised that a) it is probably the only pure Fantasy book I have in me so I can’t build a career on it and b) I have no Eastern European background/connection whatsoever despite the story drawing so much from it so it just doesn’t feel right. But it’s still like. Many years of writing and workshopping and editing and even a few queries. No matter how my life works out, this book was an important one that I learned a lot from and will always remain dear to me.

I’m still on the fence about this though because again... it’s original work! That had 7 years put into it! That’s been sent out to lit agents! Even now I’ve written this post I’m starting to get nervous about revealing so much of me... even if Hold Your Destiny has even more words, technically. So, some feedback first. Errrr so it’s #PitMad right now, and this time I’m actually participating instead of retweeting a butt-ton of other pitches, so it would hearten me greatly if you’re on the hellbirbsite too and would like to be supportive: RULES: - Authors pitch their unagented & unpubbed manuscripts within 280 characters - Agents and Editors “like” the tweet if they want that query - Other Writers and Readers can retweet or comment to show approval/support. Quote-tweet too, but just don’t use the # so it won’t get clogged

There are always well-meaning folk who don’t know these rules and “like” anyway (which I understand 100% because that’s way more intuitive) but if possible please don’t because it accidentally gets hopes up! And retweeting/commenting/quote-tweeting is still helpful as it a) gives the post more traffic in general and b) those agents/editors will see that there’s interest in the concept. There it is, BEAR BOOK! (And featuring Stacey Moonbear the model bear.) 400 pages in the pulp! Three cheers for fellow writer friends who prefer to read without backlight and write comments instead of type. I am fond of trees but will admit that being able to see the ink upon the paper and feel its weight is a huge delight.

After the session yesterday I feel so encouraged and eager to incorporate the suggestions and inspirations received from such a great critique group, with sights set to query by end of this year. Really excited!!!!!!!!!!

5 Goals for 2020

1) Query Bear Book.

2) Begin a new book. Maybe that ambitious YA+NA contemporary novel involving multiple POVs about how fandom bonds are hard to sever? (And start thinking more deeply about/outlining more carefully for even more ambitious MG action/adventure fantasy series merging Chinese mythology with HK history and identity politics. Oy.)

3)  Submit short stories to journals/anthologies/magazines, build up professional writing creds to back my queries. Also maybe a website?!

4) Read minimum 50 books.

5) Develop a new hobby to meet more people because as an adult it’s actually pretty hard.

With that now thrown out into the world, I’m going to bed. Happy new year everyone!

10 Accomplishments of 2019

1) Finished my 200k+ BOTW fic series by my birthday (end of Feb), in a rush and exhaustion and panic because I knew I also needed to...

2) Finish the first major revisions of Bear Book through March which still had some later chapters in literal bullet points because I was slated to...

3) Workshop Bear Book with my critique group in May, and it went surprisingly and encouragingly well!

4) Actually went on holiday?! Went to Toronto for the wedding of two of my dearest friends and at the same time got to visit with my dearest university friends too.

5) Got a significant raise at work, heck yuss

6) Renewed lease on apartment for very low markup, thank you landlady

7) Made it through the depressing and stressful October-November months here in Hong Kong

8) Finished my second major revisions of Bear Book by end of NaNoWriMo in time for...

9) #PitMad in December!! Got a single industry like and though I’m not interested in indie pubbing, it was very encouraging

10) Accidentally continued my “go out with a guy once every 2 years and as usual leave it feeling like this whole dating thing is so not worth the hassle” tradition

Just got back from an overseas trip, therefore queue has come to a standstill. Gimme a day tho
