For a moment, the air between the two hung low and heavy. Saeran’s lips curled into a silent ‘o’, but somehow, he didn't quite know what to say, which resulted in him saying nothing. This behavior was particularly unlike Saeyoung. Whether it be his twin's slightly sagging shoulders, the pained expression on his face, or his dejected flop on the couch, Saeyoung’s melancholy certainly didn't go unnoticed by Saeran.
“Hold that thought,” he said, disappearing behind the living room wall. After several seconds, he appeared with the two kittens he and his brother had been raising under each arm. As soon as he got closer, he placed them gently on his brother’s lap. “It isn't a family meeting without Mint and Chip.” The truth was, Saeran figured if anything could cheer his twin up, it would be a pair of adorable kittens right now.
“Well…” he began, awkwardly rubbing his hands together. “I wouldn't say that.. I mean, you've made some really major mistakes, but so have I and you don't hold them against me.” Shockingly, not a single member of the RFA had held it against Saeran that he’d personally attacked their messenger app with the intention to harm them. Even crazier, they had all forgiven him for being in this psychotic cult. So it wasn't like he had much of a choice but to try and forgive his brother’s mistakes.
“You're annoying and you did a lot of things that hurt me, but I still…” He nearly had to force the words out of his mouth, leaving a bitter aftertaste as he choked out, “um..love you..” He said the words quickly with a slight flushing of his cheeks. He hoped maybe he said it so quickly, Saeyoung didn't hear it.
“You don't always cause pain. You bring joy to people in your life, too, including me. You did a lot of really great things for me, both recently and when we were younger.” The corners of his lips twitched into a slight grin at the thought of some of his brother’s kind gestures.
With a deep sigh and a distracted hand that scratched behind Chip’s minuscule ear, Saeran added, “I'm not about to sit here and say everything is fine between us, but you're a good guy and a good brother. You have to remember, you were just a kid when you made that decision.”
Saeran shifted uncomfortably in his seat. “I'm sure you were feeling really hopeless with mom, and you found a way out to keep yourself safe, so you took it. I don't know if I could have turned that offer down, either. It sounds really tempting.” He would have liked to believe he would never leave his brother in an abusive situation by himself, but truth be told, he was so desperate for it to stop, he wasn't sure if he could have resisted the temptation either.
“But my point is, you were a kid when V asked you to make a decision that would impact the rest of your life. He was someone you trusted and he took advantage of you. He promised you he would keep me safe, and he obviously lied, but that's not your fault.” His hand patted Mint’s head. “These two don't think it's your fault either, right guys?” Maybe it was his imagination, but he could have sworn he heard a tiny meow in response.
