the idea of this is both a representation of how I am seeing them so far and also how Bronte may remember “them” as a couple/partnership/whatever the hell they are.
In this Fintan is younger than Bronte- not because of an age gap but rather being at different points in their lives. Brontë’s ears are pointed, signaling this is the current version of himself, circlet there. This is the version of himself he remembers. However, the man that he is dancing with is a collage, he’s not confined. Fintan is fluid, bleeding into different years, memories. He changes, represents change.
Brontë is dressed in a simpler tunic which I tried to convey a bit of Ancient Rome in. Wreaths are embroidered along his sleeves, fabric (which would be red if I had colored this) falls over his shoulders trying to replicate a council member from back then. This is meant to represent his devotion to the law, tradition, as well as his position as a public authority and “decision maker”.
In contrast, Fintan is dressed in dress- which will get to, but we’ll start at his neck piece. Unlike Bronte , he does not wear his circlet. His power does not lie in that of authority, it does not lie in law and order. But his necklace shows off that one day, he might have, or might’ve had by holding gems. His dress is long, but contains a few elements I’ll touch on. First of all, it leaves a portion of his upper chest exposed, vulnerable. His neck is shown partially exposed, representing that he at one point did have himself bared to Bronte, but now there is more that he does not know. There was plenty of Fintan that Bronte was able to grasp, but never all of it.
The dress curls up his chest and abdomen almost wildly , with what would be shimmering, gold, again showcasing his somewhat royal roots. that he once studied in the Noble castles. That he was once ancient and revered. But he’s not and the wildness of his outfit, plus the skirt that spins out shows that he is constantly moving creature and that even at rest, even in the arms of someone else, he is a fire, and it is spinning and growing and changing. Parts of his dress cover Brontë’s figures, showing that he would be consumed by fire that he stayed close enough long enough. Fintan has to be by himself to achieve his goals because they overtake everything else. The fabric that runs loosely around his arms is again a similar thing, (how many times have I said similar??) just a reminder of fire, not being a steady ever present thing. It has to move and it has to adapt. The opposite of what the council does, the opposite of fluidity is their determinant to stick to their laws, to tradition the way things have always been and always must be.
Except things don’t have to be exactly what they are all the time because Fintan’s ears here, are not pointed! Neither are his face very aged. He looks young and he looks like he is staring up at you. He’s both young and and weathered, he must look like how his lover remembers him, for Bronte would struggle to hold the man who has committed such atrocities that he has at this point in their lives, at the present, and at the same time there is something in him that doesn’t keep him from locking his gaze into his goals.
anyways, to finish it up here, I’ll just reference what the quote is. The song is obviously under pressure by David Bowie and Queen, (I luv David Bowie 🥹🥹) but if we’re taking this from the perspective of Brontë’s dream, it is that at one point they danced together for the last time as equals and one time for the last time, his friends, and now they are caught in an endless dance, but it is not a loving one. It is not a brotherhood it is not romantic. This will be their last dance, because one of them will have to die before it’s over. Or be killed in any way that matters, but whatever it is, they will not both make it out of this. They’re in a headlock. They are under pressures, that they have brought up upon themselves and that they have been pushed into.
Anyways, I know this was a long yap for a kind of chopped piece, but; I don’t know. Tell me if you’d liked it I guess, or what I should try to fix.
