a quick drabble for @wayhavensummer prompt: cooking!
—
Nate could never tire of watching the way Fiona’s eyes positively brighten when he visits her apartment.
A simple yellow, floral patterned apron covers her from chest to knees, her curly hair pulled away from her face in a ponytail. Sweat sheens on her upper brow and on her cheeks, the sharp smell of cheese (artificial, he notes at the chemical undertone) and the salt of sausage clinging to her.
“Pardon, did I interrupt you cooking dinner, Fiona?” Nate asks after he leans down to plant a gentle kiss to her temple.
“Just a bit, all I’m making is some macaroni and cheese and hot dogs! Nothing fancy,” Fiona laughs, ushering him into her apartment with a wave of her hand.
She flits away with a jovial hum, the skirts of her dress flaring out behind her as she returns to the kitchen. Nate follows, unable to stop himself from admiring Fiona move from counter to stovetop, looking as busy as a bee and as light as the spring breeze. Watching her be so domestic, so comfortable, makes Nate’s skin tingle — the idea that this is something he’s coming to share with her now, coming as easy and as natural as if they’ve been together for years.
It’s still so extraordinary. Finding a place in her little apartment where she puts out two plates, two glasses, two sets of silverware, a space she’s already habitually made for him.
“Say, Nate,” Fiona calls, bringing him out his warm reverie. “Do you think adding six cups of water sounds like too much?”
Nate blinks. “Six cups of water to what, my darling?”
“The macaroni and cheese, of course!”
Confusion, quickly followed by dread, washes over him.
He darts a half step forward, eyeing all at once the blue box of macaroni and cheese, the torn packet of cheese powder, and the drowned mess of what looks like pasta with little roads of hot dogs bobbing in orange tinted water.
Well maybe they won’t be sharing much of a dinner after all.
“What—,” Nate pauses, readjusting his tone to something more neutral when she levels him with a concerned look. “Why did you add six cups of water?”
“The box says so! See, it lists out the ingredients, butter, milk, the cheese powder, and six cups of water?” Fiona tilts her head, nose wrinkling at him. “But it looks wrong, right?”
Nate gingerly takes the box in his hands and scans the instructions. True to form, it does list the instructions and the ingredients to prepare the macaroni and cheese, including the six cups of water.
Understanding dawns on him. A laugh builds in the back of his throat and it takes every ounce of effort to push it away when Fiona narrows her eyes at him and draws her lip into a pout.
“Fiona,” he begins, a chuckle slipping past. “Fiona, my darling, you only needed the water to boil the pasta, not add it to the sauce.”
Her face falls, eyes turning blank.
“Oh.”
“Yes, oh.”
“I probably should have spent more time reading the instructions…” Fiona frowns, turning her quickly reddening face away and looking very much the part of full indignity. “Sorry Nate, we might have to order in instead? I don’t have much else to cook.”
Teasing aside, Nate slides an arm around her middle, burying a kiss to top of her head as she huffs and shifts towards him. It wouldn’t do to make fun of her further, not when her pinched expression betrays the depth of her annoyance.
“Don’t be so upset, Fiona, eating in suits me well enough.”
Then, to fully turn her attention away from any more of her cloudy thoughts, Nate whispers something slightly more suggestive in her ear. Promising her that she would make a delectable meal of her own and one taste of her would be more than enough to satisfy him.
It works. Fiona laughs, twisting and shoving away from when Nate moves his kisses from her head to tickling her jaw with a flurry of quick kisses. He laughs with her, loving the sound of it, loving the look of her cheeks full and her mouth stretched into an open grin.
“Well I hope you just won’t take one taste, mi osito,” Fiona winks.
“Never. If you’ll let me, I could drink myself dizzy and intoxicated. Now,” Nate pushes up the sleeves of his shirt, saddling up in front of the kitchen sink. “Let me clean up and you can handle ordering.”
“Deal.”
Fiona reaches up, stealing one last kiss from him, and moves away from the kitchen phone already in hand.
Sunshine dappled and sun warmed, Nate could thumb page of every book of poetry and still come up short to find ways to describe Fiona as they both lounged in cool long grass shaded by a grand oak tree. Might he describe the hue of her skin, a rich, golden brown like hot baked earth and flecked with freckles or the dark curls at the nape of her neck that would kiss her skin with each caress of the salted sea breeze.
Or perhaps he could name each line and tendon of her hands and her fingers, the tips stained red with cherry juice, and describe their quick, deft movements as Fiona worked a water color sketch of the faraway ocean and washed out sky.
Perhaps her short amused huffs or her lilting laugh or the curve of her cherry stained smile or the deep sigh of pleased enjoyment when her teeth sunk into the cherry’s flesh that would make his throat constrict thinking of what flesh he might like her teeth to relish instead.
Any of that, all of that and any of the other details of Fiona, could do.
What he would like to capture with words is the simple action of Fiona reaching to him, tucking away a lock of hair behind his ear, and telling him with her fingers still lingering on his cheek that his mouth was dirty.
And just as fast, her touch would be gone with only her teasing smile turned to her paper and his skin burning in her wake.
Nate could not help himself if he pulled his hair forward and let the cherry juice sit at the corners of his lips.
thinking about how delicious it is for fiona, a nate romancing detective, whose themes are agency and growing into one’s own and owning the choices and failures you make, being best friends with morgan after that demo
especially considering how readily morgan comes to fiona’s defense at the clearing
would make a mighty fine one on one talk regarding the trapper fight scene 👀
hiya vee!! 3, 5, 20 for nate/fiona/ava please! 🥰 (~baswynric)
hi ryley!!! :D thank you for the asks!!!
3. If they complimented each other, what would they say?
Fiona @ Nate: "Your love of books is so vivid you inspired me to read some of them too!"
Fiona @ Ava: "Seeing your cute little dimples always puts a pep in my step!"
Nate @ Fiona: "You have a well trained eye to find the good and fun in anything and in any person."
Ava @ Fiona: [Shang Li Voice] "You fight good."
5. What activities do they enjoy together?
I think as a group they enjoy spending time in each other's company even if they're all busy! Fiona really just likes to vibe with her lovers, and she's happy to be sketching or playing her Switch or shopping online cuddled up next to Nate and Ava engage in their own private hobbies.
Individually, Fiona likes going fishing and working out with Ava and likes taking Nate out to swing dance!
20. What is a promise they have made to each other?
Fiona, to Both: "There's always time to talk things out and always a chance to be heard."
Nate to Fiona: "I want to be the hand on your back, not the hand holding you away."
Ava to Fiona: "I will be your rock, I will be there to ground you."
Just going off from book three, Nate clearly has some issues he's got to recover from in re: trusting Fiona to be capable. That is something that gets under her skin and something I think will be a frequent issue, especially considering that Ava sides with Fiona on her capabilities.
With Ava, because of her strong loyalty to the Agency, I think they're gonna butt heads on some of the uh, policies and practices. Fiona turns in the LT to spearhead a reform of the Agency since she doesn't agree with their methods.
2. If they could each describe each other in one sentence, what would it be?
Oh, yes, this is cute. :3
Fiona describing Nate: "At heart, a real dorky ass dad type with the bod to match."
Fiona describing Ava: "Like one of those Michaelangelo statues but with hella gay panic."
Nate describing Fiona: "Her life and her heart is in the clouds: free and untethered; that also applies to her head at times."
Ava describing Fiona: "Dedicated and hardworking when it matters the most."
21. How have they changed each other for the better/for the worse?
For Fiona and Ava, her romance with Ava began honestly as deep admiration for a leader who had her shit together and was efficient and hard working. Fiona looked up to her as a new detective! Ava inspired Fiona to work harder and to believe in her own abilities.
For Fiona and Nate, she had to put her ability to stand up to herself to the test at times (considering that book 3 scene), but what she does appreciate from him is his open softness. It's not something she's experienced often from men and she really values that in Nate.
For Nate and Ava both I think Fiona is such an open book that being open with themselves is just... easier. She's patient, but ultimately curious and will test the boundaries more and more. I think she allows them both to have conversations that may be difficult!
Ava’s footsteps stomping down the hallway announce her presence long before Fiona catches a glimpse of the brooding vampire, like a flash of lightning warning of the oncoming thunder.
Beside her Nate looks relatively unperturbed as he continues reading. “You’ve gone and upset her again.”
“No hush I’m sure she’s not that mad,” Fiona hisses. There’s not enough time for her to find a hiding space in the library; besides, it has only one exit. The door slams open seconds after Fiona manages to grab a pillow to her chest and tuck herself as close to Nate as she possibly can in an effort to make herself look smaller.
The look on Ava’s face staring her down is absolutely as dark as thunderstorm clouds.
“That’s a poor hiding spot, Fiona,” Ava bites out, clearly unamused. “Did you really think I would fail to notice the disarray you left the training room in?”
Nate turns the page of his book. “Fiona my darling, we’ve discussed keeping the training room tidy after you use it.”
“Several times.”
Nate hums in a bland sort of agreement. “Yes, Ava, several times.”
Shoot. Earlier Fiona had been using the training room and its array of gymnastics equipment, taking advantage of its variety of equipment and its size to make a return to gymnastic training. It’d been years since she’d been fully committed, but genuinely fun as she dipped her toes back into her old routine.
Fun until it meant cleaning up after herself.
“Farah needed my help, you know…” Fiona tries with a small smile. It’s a fib. A little one. Farah had needed her help after all… but only to pick out a couple new dresses. “I couldn’t say no.”
“Helping Farah doesn’t absolve you from cleaning your messes.” Ava crinkles her nose at her. Fiona squeaks and curls tighter against Nate.
“No, none of that,” Nate chuckles and carefully extricates himself out of her iron grip hold to her dismay. “Go now. It’s only fair.”
Looking between Nate and Ava, Fiona knows she’s lost. Nate won’t meet her eye though she can clearly see he’s smiling and Ava-- well, her brow is still pinched and unmoving. Her hand is out now, waiting for Fiona to take it.
“Fiiiiiine!” Fiona moans as she lets Ava pull her to her feet. “I’m going I’m going!”
