Unpopular opinion here but I want to share my thoughts.
I wasn’t able to read the fic so I’m not sure the exact context but from what I’ve gathered it seems that a confederate flag was used in the decor of a trailer park hillbilly version of Joel. While I agree that there are obvious negative connotations to a confederate flag and I don’t support the use of them or the message they send I think people are over reacting. It fits the character. It’s setting the scene of the fictional scenario. Now If the writer were to expand on it, promote that message, or say something problematic i would agree that it should be taken down BUT if it was purely used to set the scene or decorate then I don’t get this whole situation.
i disagree with you 100% and quite frankly, i’m appalled to have gotten this in my inbox. i didn’t even finish getting through the whole ask and i don’t care to.
it was extremely offensive. that flag represents violence, hatred, and it’s an insult to people of color. it reminds black people that they were, and to some STILL ARE, seen as less than, as subhuman, as slaves. it is a symbol of hatred, point blank period. there is no fucking excuse for it.
what a fucking privilege it must be to think people, especially people of color are overreacting to a flag that racists today still proudly display and carry, making it known what their beliefs are towards anyone who is not white. what a fucking privilege it is to be able to minimize this whole situation.
