Hi!! I've been reading your tags related to mcu civil war and man I totally agree with you. I was never excited for this movie but after seeing the trailer I'm just disappointed. Mcu Steve is totally ruined for me, there were scenes in aou (like when he already trusts Wanda and not Tony before Visions birth) that made me cringed and now he sounds completely stupid in civil war, it's like if you don't agree with him he'll step on you because only captain america is right and no else UGHHHH
and the saddest part? No matter how much Tony does and puts his heart in it he’ll be hated ))):
hiii! first of all, i’m so sorry for such a late reply! and omg thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with me and i’m so glad you agree! <3
the thing is, steve is far from my favorite character in the mcu but still, i can’t in good faith be unfair towards him. steve is… a man of ultimates, he sees the world in only two shades. everything’s either right or wrong, either black or white. and this makes him a very unrealistic person because human nature is much more nuanced and complex than that. but at the same time, this is what makes other characters look up to him because in order to be able to see such a clear distinction between good and bad, one must be, to a certain extent, able to rise above normal human flaws like selfishness and arrogance etc. and to some extent, steve succeeds, he is not just a great man, he’s also a good man. and of course, he’s not without flaws but in him they’re… less apparent? so i understand the way he empathizes with pietro and wanda because he sees a version of himself in them and their reasons for agreeing to be experimented with and he wants to help them be better. and i understand why he is quick to question tony because in his world, everything fits in neat little boxes and tony is anything but mouldable, he’s fast and flashy and unpredictable and dangerously smart and that catches steve off guard. but most importantly, tony is a futurist, which makes his reasonings and his actions incomprehensible to someone like steve who is often inflexible. i mean, i absolutely hate it but i do understand it.
but the thing is also that steve is not a good friend. he loves bucky very much and is fiercely loyal to him, which i believe is a combination of guilt for not saving him and also because bucky is his most profound and significant link to the world he’s left behind. and this is why the more i read about cacw, the more it disappoints me, because beyond that, steve has little regard for anyone else. and there was a post floating around a few days back which explained this point much better than i could but: steve is fighting for bucky and nothing else. it’s not just tony steve has no regard for, it’s everyone. even if steve and tony aren’t bffs, they spent two years fighting each other and trusting each other with their lives, and he won’t even deign to listen to a compromise. and it’s also natasha who’s one of his first friends in the new world, rhodey and vision who are his teammates, it’s clint and wanda and even sam who is probably the best friend he doesn’t deserve because if they wanted to support the other side, steve would equally have no regard for them and fight them without a second thought. but more importantly, it’s the whole world and the people he had vowed to protect that he’s disregarding. and that is the most unacceptable thing to me, because no person, not even the best person ever, should ever be more important than the world in general. humanity as a whole should always, always be valued over any individual, and till cap2 even steve was a fervent believer of this (people are going to die buck, please don’t make me do this). this is no longer love or loyalty, this is fanaticism and this is what tony is trying to prevent. (i mean, i’m going to be harsh here but he’s hardly the first person in the mcu to have suffered a profound and meaningful loss and he certainly won’t be the last, but if everyone else can cope without having a giant worldwide tantrum, then he should also be able to.)
and yeah you’re absolutely right tony as usual has drawn the short straw. :( it’s gotta be tough to realize not only was he never enough for his dad when compared to cap, but he’s not even good enough for cap to hear him out without trying to kill him. plus, god forbid he expresses a moment of discontent at having to deal with a guy who killed his parents. no matter if he’s right (which he always is because he’s the futurist, he’s right even when he doesn’t go about it the right way) or wrong, this is going to end badly for him and he’s going to have to deal with the fallout and this could all have been prevented if steve would just fucking listen. yay civil war!
