Meet the Authors - Kellie Doherty
Where are you from?
I'm originally from Eagle River, Alaska, a small town twelve miles north of Anchorage. I moved to Portland, Oregon, in 2014 to pursue a master's in book publishing from Portland State University and I recently graduated with my degree.
How did you get into writing?
I love Alaska. The winter there is gorgeous, snowy, and glittering. But the nights are long and sometimes the cold pushed me inside for a cup of hot cider and a seat by the fire. On those days, I got into the habit of writing. First fanfiction, honing my craft in other universes, using other characters, and just playing around, really. After a few years, I started writing my own universes, characters, and adventures. (And discovered I liked it just as much, if not more!) Thus, a writing career was born. Plus, I've always loved reading books, so writing seemed like a natural extension of that love.
Who are your literary influences?
Ursula K. Le Guin and Jane Fletcher, in the past. Patrick Rothfuss, recently. J.K. Rowling, always and forever.
Past/Current/Future projects?
Finding Hekate, my first novel in the Cicatrix duology, was published by Desert Palm Press in April of this year. Finding Hekate is a scifi story featuring two lesbian characters; it's got action, adventure, romance, and thrills all rolled into one! (You can find it on Amazon, Bella Books, B&N, and Powell's, among other places.) The sequel to it - Losing Hold - will be out next year, and I'm currently in the beta-reading phase. My next project that I'm working on will be a five-book fantasy series and each of the main characters will be bisexual, lesbian, or fluid. (The first four books will feature a different main character and the final book will bring them together.) I'm tentatively calling it The Broken Chronicles. I'm pretty excited about it, too, and I'm in the worldbuilding, character creation, and plotting phase right now. Some other cool projects include the Mischief Corner Books LGBT flash fiction anthology entitled Flight that published on Sept. 21 in which I have a scifi lesbian piece called "A Sub Mechanic's Panic" nestled among the rest and the Back of Beyond Press zine coming out in October featuring "Mission 20", my scifi short story with lesbian characters and some local artwork done by the press' founders.
