To Demand, Find and Keep Space
With all the space in the world sometimes it can all seem so small. Everything touching the next like things crowded in a dark drawer. We know there are millions of people, millions of miles, billions of stars and we are all connected by the tiniest things. Small tethers to one another that keep us all in this space. All connected regardless of what that means and who that entails.
Yet it’s like we can’t share this vast space. Something so big and wide but we disagree about who needs and deserves what and why this space isn’t big enough. We fight over who controls this space, who is worthy of taking it up or making some more. All this space and we are still in each other’s way. We are still unable to comprehend that this is shared. For all of us, not just for some.
It becomes about space when we talk about what’s happening right now in this country. Six feet of space, space to be safe, space do exist, space to grow. Some of us don’t have the least of what we need to feel like this space is even theirs. Some exist on the outskirts of the space, trying to understand how there is no room in people’s hearts or minds.
We have to occupy this space. That means all of us. And if this space is tainted, then what do we do? What do we do when the selfishness of others becomes the air everyone else is expected to breathe? What do we do when we have been kind, good, loving, just? What do we do when we believe the space is for the common good but that doesn’t prevail?
When do we demand our space? When does everything become something to everyone and not just a few? When can we claim the space it takes for us to grow and thrive? When do we stop listening to the nose that wants to fill every crevice and listen to the words that need to be heard? It’s hard to say. I think the thing is we are at the mercy of a few when the masses want, demand, more. It’s amazing to understand the concept of our power and to know how stifled it is by those fanning the flames of racism, fear and greed. Power that can and will be felt because if now is not the time then when?
I figure out how to continue because we all do. Even during this, we are all existing in our own ways and in our own spaces at the same time. Sometimes I think we lose sight of that connectedness that exists between us, one tied to the other by the energy that finds a way to us all - good and bad.
