This simple pair of mini-collages will concludes my enjoyable foray into #findingjoyinthesmallestofthings due to the open call for 2x2” pairs. Although similar they are two halves of a pair of scissors. They are my greatest tool for this craft. They symbolise stability and duration due to their good design. They also allude to the conflict I have as a left handed person who cannot use scissors in that hand as I was encouraged always to use my right hand. It makes me wonder if I would have had greater dexterity if my dominant hand was trained in scissoring. Also my mother always refers to scissors in the singular. Robin and (Bat)Girl 2x2” diptych responding to #kanyerartcollection call for mini collages #findingjoyinthesmallestofthings There are two things going on in these collages. First it’s an overall struggle between the book and the comic. Is it real reading if there are graphics? I’m a great lover of picture books and reviewed them for many years but somehow it took me ages to value the graphic novel for my teenagers. Now I value any kind of reading a child is willing to do as long as it’s on paper. The second is the tension of these two minor superheroes Robin and Batgirl. Robin is a sidekick and Batgirl stands on her own and yet Robin is more highly regarded. It must be sexism. Where the Buffalo Roam 2x2” diptych This is another pair for the Kanyer’s open call for mini collages. I’ve lived outside the US for more than half my life now. I love my country of birth and I have never stopped being an American in spirit. But what does it mean to be an American now? Can you be a patriot and not believe in climate change? Can you be an American and not think of yourself as coming from a nation of immigrants? Twins 2x2” diptych for the Kanyers’ mini Collage open call. It’s such a great idea to challenge artists to create tiny pairs of connected worlds. The relationship between fraternal or “sisternal” twins is unlike any other when it’s allowed to be freely close and not individualised. They are different but quite the same in many ways. It must be a comfort to have this partner in life. Is it difficult to be an individual as an adult? Do the benefits out way the negatives?
