But when the Master, or someone else knowledgeable about Time Lords, asks a question, or makes a quip:

"Are these friends... or snacks?"

"What are you, a vegetarian?"

The Doctor's a bit too defensive. A bit too possessive. Like a dog over a bowl of food, he barks and he circles.

His companions probably don't know why--he hates telling them what he is, what he does. So they don't understand why he's acting like this.

Why he takes it so seriously.

Why he's looking at them like that.
