The Witch Bird of Lapland

In Finnish folklore, the saiwo loddeh—“witch birds”—appear as ordinary white birds, yet come from the underworld to aid noaidi shamans.✨

Passed through families, these spirit familiars guide witches, guard reindeer, foresee fate—or bring curses.

Feared & revered, they sing secrets through the haunting joik.

We know many different styles of kantele playing. For five string kanteles each string had its own finger, which would pluck only that string. Another general principle was that the finger arrangement was crossed, alternating at some point from one hand to the other.
