Unlikely Gods

They were all gathered in a small room above a tavern in a village far away from any of their homes. One woman, tall and imposing, stood by the fire while, angrily growling at being dragged away from her love and their adventure. She was not alone in her distaste, a dwarf with a ginger beard sat dinking a beer. He already had a ton of work to do, he didn't need these people to give him even more. He stewed for another moment then abruptly shouted, "I don't have time for this; you all know that mess I have to clean up!" "Yeah," The woman by the fire said, turning her angry gaze towards the dwarf, "A mess you did nothing to stop. Honeydew, I thought that was why you got involved, to prevent that catastrophe from happening; low and behold, you caused it!" "I didn't know what I was doing!" The dwarf shouted back, "I went there to learn about what was happening, and the bloody bastards didn't teach me anything! They just told me what to do, not how it worked; so I did the only thing that made sense from what they told me. How was I supposed to know that I was the cause of that disaster? And what about you, Saberial? You and Zoeya fly around through all time and space, destroying planets." "Calm down, you two," a third member of the gathering, a woman with short black hair and a purple dress, interjected. "As you both know, there was no stopping the disaster of Hole Diggers; it was written into the script of the universe long ago. The only thing we can do is containment, which is why we are here, and I guess Verbal doesn't need to get here for that." Just as his name was spoken, a strange man who looked like he just escaped being malled by a bear entered the room. "Hey, sorry I'm late, Su. I had to give Ridge an excuse; which was weird, he never worries about me." "It doesn't matter; you're here now." Su replied, straitening her dress like a business woman, "But, it's good you're here now, we were just about to get started. Now, as you all know, Honeydew caused a black hole that sent clones of himself and the two most evil men who ever existed throughout time and space. And, Miss. Zoeya has a tendency to destroy every planet she comes in contact with, though it is never her intention. So, here is the idea, Saberial, you steer Zoeya to planets and times with the clones. This will correct both of your mistakes." "I'm not doing that," Saberial said, folding her arms, "I didn't make any mistakes. Zoya doesn't go to planets to destroy them, she wants to help, and if I intensionally direct her to multiple planets with the same people on them, she'll think something is up." "I don't need a silly space pirate to take care of things," Honeydew interjected. "I can handle my own messes." "Why are you two so against this?" Verbal asked, looking between the two, "I thought you two would be over anything between you by now. You guys haven't made a move against each other in centuries, I thought you got along now." The two looked at each other, then Saberial spoke up, "We agreed on a ceasefire." "Well, now's a chance to take it a step further," Su said, making it clear the two would either work together or face her wrath. Then, she turned to Verbal, "But we have another matter to settle. I have a feeling Lying may be getting to the point to where we need to stop him." "So, you're not going to consider him for joining any more?" Honeydew tossed into the conversation, "Last I heard, that was what you two were doing, finding the more powerful people in this world to see if they could join the ranks of the gods. If I remember correctly, the only consideration for godhood is power, and has nothing to do with what you do with that power." "So, by stopping him gaining power, you would change the true course of events, and you wouldn't do that," Saberial said, smiling at the idea of the one of them who most in forced the rules was now going to break them. "I'm not going to stop his rise to power," Su deflected, "Both he and Kirin are getting close, but I have a feeling that godhood is very far in the future. They approach it slowly, but they will both get there eventually. No, what I need is a way to get Lying away from me. At his rate of power gain and mental degeneration, I may have to do something drastic to protect them from being written out of reality." "I don't get how I fit in?" Verbal asked, not liking what he was hearing. "I need you to run interference, like you did with Ridge and Bebop." Su said, like she wasn't asking anything big. "You can easily get away with more manipulation than I can because of your mortal persona having multiple personalities. It will make more sense if you are the one who gets in the way, or starts a war, or what ever you choose to do, just make sure Lying and I get some time apart." "This seems a bit more one-sided than Honeydew and Saberial's deal." Verbal said, raising an eyebrow, "What do I get out of this?" "Your friends have their own questions," Su said, waving her hand like the answer was obvious, "You just said, Ridge is starting to notice that things aren't quite right with you, despite your insanity. Ridge, like Lying and Kirin, is well on his way to godhood; perhaps, he can be pushed even further along if he's given a bit of competition. That, along with the need to explain away the secret that Ridge is so close to finding out. Is this a good enough deal?" Verbal smiled, "Dear sister, I would have done it free for you, but I'm not going to turn down a little incentive." They shook hands and made details. Honeydew told Saberial where most of the clones would be, and she promised she would do her best to steer Zoeya towards them, but if the captain, even for a second suspects anything, they would go back to the old plan. Su watcher her siblings leave, happy their problems would be solved and hopeful that they would be closer in the coming millennia, unlike before. Her two younger siblings always seemed to fight, but Verbal seems to be coming around; things are so much better when they are together. It always falls apart when they try to do things separately. One would think the gods would know better.
