Tales from the Borderlands really shouldn’t work. On paper, it’s a “choose your own adventure” spin-off set in a franchise that has always seemed pretty uninterested in its own story. Best case, the mainline games drown anything interesting under Claptrap’s never-ending “haha random” monologues (and I hate that little stupid box robot with the passion of a billion burning suns). Worst case, they actively ruin their own best characters and ideas—hi, Maya.

But somehow Tales sidesteps all of that and ends up being not just a great Borderlands story, but a great sci-fi story, period. The writing is sharp, the pacing is tight, and the choices actually feel like they matter. Rhys and Handsome Jack’s storyline in particular is a good example of a “devil on my shoulder” narrative, where charisma and manipulation constantly clash with fear and ambition. It’s the kind of psychological tug-of-war you’d expect in a prestige drama, not a loot-shooter spinoff.

And then there’s Fiona and Sasha. Absolute girl disasters. Absolute icons. They’re messy in the best way possible—trying, failing, scheming, and surviving, all while being ridiculously compelling to watch. Which makes it extra infuriating that the mainline games decided the only Tales characters worth bringing forward were Rhys and… Vaughn. Vaughn. Of all people.

It’s such a shame, because Tales proves there’s real narrative gold in this universe when someone actually cares to mine it. Instead of endless guns with “quirky” flavor text, we get a story about ambition, loyalty, betrayal, and survival that actually has emotional weight.

My Little Vault Hunter's: Violence is Magic

This actually started with an oc related question on Discord asking what MLP species would your oc's would be and decided to revisit some old mlp/borderlands designs.

Maya (who I originally had as a pegasus) is now a kirin/alicorn hybrid

Krieg was mostly kept the same, only changing his head shape and coat color (though I should mention he's supposed to be hairless)

While I did post pony! Rhys, it was somewhat incomplete (I forgot to color his undershirt and he did have a cutie mark before & that was back in 2024)

And I just decided to add Fiona here as well. For those wondering why Fiona has feathers, it's main a design choice for whenever I draw mlp characters (if I ever do Sasha, she'll be a pegasus with minor unicorn traits (long tail, trailing feltlocks and cloven hooves) her cutie mark is supposed to be a calling card,something theifs would leave and Fiona is a con artist

As for my oc's

Salem: kirin alicorn (a very strange looking one due to her dad's genetics)

Andrew: hypogriff

Cereza: earth pony

And The Windwaker: just a little dragon (I kinda love how they turned out, I was thinking about King from TOH when drawing them)

So I’ve finished the Tales from the Borderlands.

Recently I played Dispatch, and I really needed a fun and funny narrative game, and that’s what my friends recommended I try, although I’m not at all familiar with the universe.

And I loved it. It’s beautiful.

It is clever and funny and stylish and fun. The characters are lovable and smart and adventurous. The story is welcoming and intriguing. The openings in each episode are breathtaking and the setting is so cool and the music overall is amazing.

But now I’m left with two holes in my chest.

First, we need more games like this, and I don’t know what to do about it.

Last, I’m so sad I couldn’t romance Fiona. So sad that the game not only doesn’t encourage it, it’s like it prohibits it.

The scenes are specifically conducted to be romantic and full of awe between Rhys and Sasha, but I don’t feel the spark. The chemistry between Rhys and Fiona, on the other hand, to me is juicy and fierce, the “kill each other or kiss each other” type. The saddest part is that even after you do all the three small steps to avoid the Sasha route and get as close as you can to the game’s version of choosing Fiona, Fiona still believes it’s about her sister and not her, hence the “Stay away from my sister”, which makes me sad.

I know this is a fresh emotional take, and it doesn’t take away from the incredible beauty that the game is. I will be however a Rhyiona stan forever, because however not?
