I have never really thought about it before, crap is just softer? Might be because of etymology reasons?

From online etymology dictionary: shit came to English from a Germanic word and always has meant deification. Crap came from a French word and used to have to do with separating grain or something (like "chaff" I guess?). They mean the same thing now but (in my understanding) crap is the more polite term (pretty much just used in place of shit when there's a sensitive audience eg kids or your mother in law). Mostly because of the French I would guess.

Also in general English's worst swears come from bodily functions. So damn, hell, satan, etc. aren't really that bad but shit, fuck, and cunt are some of the worst (in north america at least, I know Australia is way different about swears in general). I think that might also be because of the French but idk maybe it was always like that. Idk what it's like in Finnish but we have lots of words that are used in their place as "less bad" damn->darn, hell->heck, fuck->screw

Thanks for the info, both of you, although I still don’t get why crap is lesser than shit, both come from the same place and nowadays mean the same… Of course this could be that in Finnish we have like one poop related swear word (paska) so having different level offensiveness to poop is a more foreign concept because of that? IDK, just seems really weird to me. It’s probably the culture thing.

Kind of makes me wonder why the saying “pardon my French” exists if crap is the less offensive excrement word… or maybe it’s just the sex thing or something? Hell if I know…

And yeah, we do have lesser equivalents for some swear words (e.g. helvetti [hell] = helkkari, hemmetti, can’t think of others right now). I haven’t really though that much about the levels of swearing to be honest. Like I can totally tell that three main categories in Finnish swearing are 1) bodily functions/body parts, 2) vaguely religious and 3) creatively mixing one of the above to make an idiom (i.e. “naama kuin norsun vitulla” = face like an elephant’s cunt). Although now that I think about it “mee vittuun” (fuck off, literally “go to cunt”) does feel stronger than “mee helvettiin” (go to hell)…
