Question from someone who hasn't read Harry Potter yet, why is it that some artists draw hermione black/dark skinned while others draw her white like in the movies? Is she supposed to be black in the books or something?
In the books, Hermione’s skin colour is never mentionned, so it’s up to interpretation. I used to believe she could only be white, mostly because of the movies, but also because I’m white myself and projected myself in her character.
The thing is, what we DO know about Hermione is that she had extremely thick, bushy hair and long teeth that people made fun of. She was also a victim of racism - as a Muggleborn, lots of Purebloods were very violent with her. So it makes sense to a lot of people that she could be black.
Ever since I was told this, I’ve started picturing Hermione as black in my head, because like many other people I believe it just fits well in her character. Also, because there aren’t many officialy non-white main characters in HP, it feels better that way for me. Representation matters, you know? Same goes for Harry having Indian heritage. I just feel like its more believable that way.
