Hairpin Banksia (Banksia spinulosa), is native to the east coast of Australia, from Victoria up to Cairns and grows from the coastline into forest areas of the Great Dividing Range. In coastal areas of it is often dwarfed but in the mountains it is often taller and more upright. The "big bad" Banksia Men (modelled after the tree’s mature cones) are the villains of the story, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, by May Gibbs. At our dog show grounds it’s growing under many of the gum trees, usually on the shaded south side. I’ve got somell try taking a cuttings and also some seedpods to try and propagate. The seedpods open after a fire. I think it will make a good bonsai and also because Australian native birds love them. N.B.
