Warnings: I couldn’t think of how to lengthen this without it seeming too filler-based. I’m going to try and make my chapters longer, since you’re only getting one instalment per week now. One thousand words a week seems a bit unfair.
“Oh my god.”
You gasped at Peter’s sudden yawp.
Beginning to panic, you threw your duvet on top of your costume, forcing yourself to turn back into flesh and bone. As you did so, you extinguished your light and the room immediately fell into darkness, leaving you wide-eyed and unable to comprehend what Peter did or didn’t see.
“Y/N?” He whispered.
You opened your mouth to speak, but no words came out. How on Earth were you going to talk your way out of this one?
“It’s just me.” Peter continued in a hushed tone. “Turn the light back on.”
“I, um…” You forced away the tears that were threatening to spill out of the shock of potentially revealing your secret to your best friend.
Although, there was always the possibility that he didn’t see anything. I mean, Peter was smart, but he often lacked common sense. He was blind to a lot of things in your friendship, especially the fact that for years you…
…never mind.
Feeling around for the switch on your bedside lamp, you flicked it on to find your best friend standing by the door with stacks and stacks of blankets and packaged snacks, a pile so high it could rival the Empire State Building. You wondered how the boy managed to balance everything with such ease.
“Uh, a little help here?” He struggled as you rose to your feet and shuffled over to him wearily.
“Right, sorry.” You said as you discovered the reason for the boy’s outburst earlier. A blanket had fallen from the top of the pile and landed over his head, concealing his entire face from you. You couldn’t help but let out a short giggle at the sight of him, relief flooding your body when you realised what this meant.
He didn’t see a thing.
“I let go with one hand for a minute to open the door, and it began to, er, topple.” He chuckled, the blanket moving in and out of his mouth as his short breaths of laughter hit the material.
You pulled the blanket away, revealing a dishevelled looking boy with the dopiest grin on his face. He uttered a “hi” when he finally saw you. Makeup free and pyjama-clad.
“What’s wrong with knocking?” You tried to joke, your voice coming out a little more unsteady than you had intended.
“We never knock. Y/N, is everything alright? You’re a little…jumpy tonight.” Peter asked worried, freeing his hands by laying his provisions out on your desk as you helped.
“Um, everything’s fine, Pete.” You said, unease still lacing your voice. You knew he wouldn’t believe a word of this. He knew you too well. “W-what are you doing here, anyway?” You asked, trying to change the subject.
“I saw your light on and so I thought I’d drop by. Is that okay? I can leave if you like-”
“-No!” You interrupted, halting the boy in his tracks. “I mean, you can stay. It’s—hang on…” You stopped, your eyebrows furrowing in sudden confusion. Peter’s innocent head tilted as he waited for you to continue. “How did you see that my light was on?”
The boy’s eyes went wide as he began to stutter. “I…er…”
“You were outside, at this hour?”
“I, um, just went for a walk, that’s all.” He stated, matter-of-factly, his eyes darting around the room.
You narrowed your eyes at him. It was ‘just a walk’ that lead to him almost being ploughed over by an RV the other week. Only this time, you wouldn’t have been there to save him. Were you going to have to keep a constant watch on this boy? Or would you just have to trust that Spider-Man would be there for him if you weren’t. “Do you have a death wish or something?” You asked, folding your arms as if you were a parent scolding a child.
“It was just a walk! Jeez.” Pete threw his hands defensively in the air. “I, er, couldn’t sleep.”
“If you couldn’t sleep, you should have called me. I would’ve come round.”
“But I didn’t know if you were awake.” He rebuked.
“I didn’t have to be.” Your tone of voice softened as you looked him directly in the eyes. “You know I’d be there for you, Pete.”
You pulled him into a hug, feeling goosebumps line your arms as Peter buried his head in the crook of your neck, his hand rubbing circles in your back. Had you been looking, you would have noticed the light pink blush that painted his cheeks. “Thanks, Y/N/N. You’re the best.”
“And don’t you forget it.” You smirked.
After you pulled away, Peter walked over to your bed and began to sit down, right where your costume was laying hidden by the duvet.
“Don’t sit there!” You exclaimed, cursing yourself as the boy jumped, startled by your sudden outburst. Not wanting to wake up the entire block, you returned your voice to a hush, “I…I just thought that we could sit out on the fire escape instead.”
The bewilderment on his face soon vanished when a soft smile crept onto his face, as did an expression that was unreadable by you. “Yeah. I’d like that.” He beamed at you as the two of you began to collect the blankets and snacks and head towards the window.
“Although, I have to warn you: It’s rather chilly out.” Peter cautioned, to which you nodded, making your way over to your wardrobe to pick out something warm to wear before you were stopped by a hand gently grabbing your upper arm. Turning around, you could see your curly-haired best friend gesturing to the blue sweater with your school crest printed in the centre.
“Lucky I brought an extra sweater.”
