The wind is crisp, biting at the exposed skin of his face, his fingers.
He doesn’t mind too much though.
The sky is gloomy, like it might rain later in the day. The clouds are a deep grey colour and there's sorrow on the wind. He can’t help but feel like it’s fitting.
“I uh, I’m not sure what to say, I guess. Bonnie said it would be good to come swing by for a little while but uh I’m not sure if she was right.” His voice is shaky and he closes his eyes, hating the silence that meets him.
“I got you flowers. Didn’t wanna get roses cause it didn’t feel right, so I got you some carnations. Nat said that they last a while too which is nice. They’re real pretty. A light yellow type. Maybe peach is a better description of the colour but-” he cuts himself off with a laugh, shaking his head.
“Here I am, trying to describe the colour of the flowers to you when I’m sure you’ve got other things you wanna hear about.”
Deep breath in, deep breath out, just like the two of you always practiced.
“She uh, she turns two in a few weeks, but you know that. I don’t know if I can do it though. Not without you.”
A cold drop of water splashes against his cheek and it’s only then that he notices the warm tears falling down his face.
“I miss you, doll. Every day it feels like it gets harder, and Bonnie says that’s normal, but I don’t know. I feel like it should get easier with time.” He huffs a breath and squeezes his eyes shut.
“Doesn’t help that Beccs is the spitting image of her mom, that’s for damn sure. But you knew that from the first moment you laid eyes on her. You were all smug about it too, said you gave her all the good genes.” He chuckles softly and shrugs his shoulders, “you were right about that.”
He stuffs his free hand into his pocket, rocking back on his heels and trying not to break down right then and there.
“She’s beautiful, (Y/n). Absolutely gorgeous. She’s stubborn, just like you. Real talkative too. I asked Steve when to expect this kinda stuff but he says each kid develops at a different speed.” He clenches his jaw tightly, trying to swallow the lump in his throat.
“I miss you so fucking much. So damn much. I wish... fuck...” He stops, wiping away the tears and leaning his head back to allow the rain to clear his thoughts.
“I wish you were here. This whole ‘parenting’ gig would be a lot easier if you were here to do it with me. I feel like I can never do it right. And Beccs needs her mom. She’s got Nat, but she needs you.” He sniffles and wipes his nose on the back of his hand.
“I’m not saying this to make you feel bad, doll, I swear. I just... I can't keep it in. I feel like a failure. I need your help.” His bottom lip trembles and he makes the split-second decision not to hide it. No, he opens the floodgates and he lets the tears fall.
“Her uh, her favourite word is still ‘mama’. Got her sayin’ ‘dada’ though. And she absolutely adores Tommy. That’s her partner in crime.” He chuckles once, thinking about how the two interact.
A fresh wave of sorrow washes over him and he drops his head, looking down at the ground and letting out a shaky breath.
“I uh, I still can’t sleep in our bed. Steve says I should try but... I can’t. I need you there and I can’t sleep without you. I stay on the couch most nights. Nat gets worried but I think I’m okay. Yeah... I think I’ll be okay.” He lets out another pained breath then shakes his head and falls to his knees, eyes squeezed shut tightly.
“I miss you. I fucking miss you so much. And some days it just hits me so damn hard that I’ll never see your smile o-or hear you laugh. You won't be there t-to see Becca on her wedding day... you won’t hold your grandchildren... you won’t be there when she graduates and we won’t grow old together. No, you won’t see me all gross and wrinkled and old and you won’t tease me when I can barely lift my own damn body. Fuck, I’d give anything to have you back. I would give absolutely anything to see you again. I miss you so much and it’s so hard to live without you.”
He puts his face in his hands, shoulders shaking with sobs as he finally lets himself break.
And break, he does.
He shatters there on that gloomy Thursday morning, heart out for the gods to see, to pick apart. He bears his goddamn soul and he cries. He sobs and he all but screams out his sorrows.
It’s agony.
Living without you has been the hardest thing he’s ever done.
He’d lose his arm ten times over if it meant he could see you again.
When you died you took a piece of him with you, and he knows he’ll never get it back.
“I love you, Doll. So damn much. To the fucking moon and back.”
He kneels there for a long time, long enough for the rain to come and go, the sun peeking through the clouds and the birds emerging from their hiding spots.
He kneels there until his tears have run dry and his heart has stopped aching, his shoulders lighter even if the bags under his eyes are heavier.
“Daddy!” He glances over his shoulder, a wet smile spreading on his face as Rebecca bounds over to him clumsily.
He opens his arms and she runs straight into them, giggling madly and pushing her hair out of her face.
“Do you wanna give mommy the flowers this time?” He asks, handing her the bouquet of carnations. She nods eagerly, sliding out of his grip and gently placing the flowers down in front of the headstone.
“Love you, mommy,” she says quietly, pressing a kiss to the polished granite.
A gentle hand pats Bucky on the shoulder, and he looks up at the source.
Nat stands over his shoulder, a sad smile on her face.
“You’ve been here for a while. Thought we should come check up on you.” He nods, pushing himself to his feet and taking a deep breath.
“I’m okay now. Therapist said I should really talk to her, not just... lay down the flowers.” Natasha nods, pulling the man into a hug.
“We all miss her, it’s okay.” Bucky huffs out a breath, trying to fight the tears but they fall anyway.
“I want one too!” Rebecca exclaims, tugging on his pant leg. He chuckles and pulls away from Nat to pick up his daughter, holding her tightly to his chest and trying with all his might to keep it together, if only for her.
“C’mon. Let’s go get ice cream. My treat,” Nat says, ruffling Becca’s hair then leading the way to her car.
Bucky follows after, pausing for a moment and glancing over his shoulder, eyes tracing over the writing carved into the stone.

Warnings: fluff, lots of smiling and flirting, implied smut, Bucky being a fireman, sweet fluffy fluff, DOG NOSES! :)
Walking down the aisle of the grocery store you search for your favorite cereal. Finally spotting a few boxes on the very top shelf you stop your cart and look around mumbling to yourself, “how the hell am I going to reach that?” You step on the bottom shelf and test its strength, watching as it bows under the pressure of your foot.
“Nope.” you say to yourself and back up. “Hey, doll, need some help?” You whirl around, hand over your heart as you lock eyes with one of the most handsome men you’ve ever seen. His smile crinkles the corners of his eyes as you take in his gear; tight navy tee shirt, suspenders resting across his broad shoulders and chest and black protective pants. It takes you a moment to find your voice, “yes, please. I can’t reach my cereal.”
Tearing his eyes away from you he looks up, “which one can I grab for ya, doll.” He’s only called you doll twice but you’re certain you want to hear it fall from his lips for the rest of your life. A blush coats your cheeks as you murmur, “Lucky Charms.” His smile widens as he reaches up and grabs 4 boxes. “Here you go, one for you, and three for us. The guys love this stuff too.”
You rock back and forth on the balls of your feet, hugging the box of cereal, “thanks for coming to my rescue.” His laugh rings through the aisle and you can’t help your own giggle from escaping. “Anytime, doll, it’s my job,” he says with a wink. “I’m James by the way, but everyone calls me Bucky.”
“Nice to meet you, Bucky. I’m y/n.” “Barnes!!! Barnes, quitcha flirting and let’s go, I’m hungry.” With one last dazzling smile Bucky bids you farewell, “pleasure is all mine, y/n, hope to see ya around.” You watch him jog off toward the other guys, the one who yelled for Bucky giving you a wink and a wave. You wave back, turning around quickly to hide your ear to ear grin.
The next morning you wake to sunshine and a cool breeze coming in through the open window. You sit up and watch your dog do her downward dog off the bed, immediately nosing you for breakfast. You both have a bite to eat then decide it’s too nice not to head out for a morning walk.
As soon as the warm sunshine hits your face you’re reminded of Bucky and his smile, warmth now flooding through your body for a different reason. You round the corner, mind far away as you keep going over your run in with the handsome fireman from yesterday.
It isn’t until you almost trip over Huckle’s leash that you hear a voice calling your name. Turning toward the sound you watch as Bucky jogs toward you, “hey y/n!!! I wasn’t sure I’d ever get your attention.” You both laugh as he bends down to pet your dog. “And who is this cutie?” he asks in his best ‘omg I love dogs’ voice. “That’s Huckle!”
He continues rubbing her chest and sides, laughing as Huckle licks his face, “I think she likes me.” Bucky finally stands and you take a moment to get another good look at him. You never thought suspenders could look so good. “She loves walks and it was such a nice morning we had to come out and enjoy it,” you explain.
“Beautiful,” he hums, his eyes looking you over. Your skin tingles under his heated gaze and you finally remember how to speak, “what are you doing out here.” He turns his head and points to the firehouse, “at work. I saw you walking by and had to say hi.”
“I’m glad you did. I hope I’m not taking up too much of your time.” He motions for you to follow him, “not at all, doll, in fact, you’ll have to come say hi to the guys now because they’ve been staring at us the whole time and I’ll get endless shit over it if I don’t introduce you properly.”
Your stomach drops, nervousness instantly taking over as you walk slowly behind him, “are you sure, Bucky, I don’t want to be in the way or anything.” This time he grabs your hand and pulls you along, “not at all, it’s a quiet morning.”
The door to the firehouse is open and you see the other firemen perched in various positions by the opening, a couple of them holding bowls of Lucky Charms. The one who winked and waved to you yesterday stands up and yells, “hey look it’s our lucky charm.” Bucky leans down next to your ear and whispers, “just ignore them, they live to tease anyone they can.”
Knowing your cheeks must be as red as the engine you dip your head and laugh, “hey guys!” Bucky stops with his hands on his hips, “ok, enough Wilson, save it for her next visit.” The whole group erupts into snickers and whistles, “you plan on having her back then, Barnes, yeah!” Bucky turns a grinning face to you, “this is the first time I’ve brought a girl around.”
Now it’s your turn to give him a bright smile, “well, I certainly feel special.” Huckle strains on her leash as she pulls you closer inside. The guys crowd around to pet her much to her glee and it gives you and Bucky a quiet moment. “So, you must live close by then,” he asks, rubbing the back of his neck. “I do, right around the corner actually, what about you?” “Just a few blocks over, makes getting to work really easy.”
The two of you notice the silence simultaneously, turning to see Huckle lying on her back, surrounded by 5 grinning guys. The one named Wilson speaks first, “well, Barnes, ask her out already. We’re all waitin’.” Throwing them the middle finger he grabs Huckle’s leash and walks you both back out into the sunshine, “so whaddya say doll, would you go out with me some time?”
Your answer is immediate, “I’d love to!” Cheers erupt from the doorway, complete with high fives and fist bumps. “How do you manage all day with them?” you ask with a sweet laugh. “It’s not that bad…. sometimes I end up punching one of them but ya know, we love each other.” You throw your head back in laughter, “I bet.”
“Can I get your number? I’ll check out the shifts for the weekend and let you know when I’m free so we can set something up.” Taking his phone from his hand you punch in your name and number, handing it back to him, “there ya go.” He looks down, the small green four-leaf clover emoji next to your name making him smile for the 100th time. “Thanks, lucky charm, I’ll talk you soon.” In a bold move you lean up and kiss him on the cheek, waving goodbye to the sounds of more cheers and whistles.
Your first date with Bucky is everything you hoped it would be, he’s sweet and romantic but all the while assertive and strong in all the right ways. You’re falling hard but you don’t want to mess it up by moving too fast. The evening ends with a heated kiss on your doorstep, Bucky reluctant to pull away from your soft lips, “I’m sorry if I took that too far, doll, it’s just…I’ve been thinking about kissing you since we met.”
Grabbing him by the collar of his shirt you pull him down to your lips once again, effectively letting him know it was more than fine. When you finally separate it’s with heavy breaths and swollen lips. “Can I see you again?” he whispers, eyes darting back to your lips. “I can’t wait,” you say, giving him one more chaste kiss before backing into your doorway and slowly closing it. The last thing you see is Bucky standing there with his bottom lip between his teeth and his eyes dark.
The next few days go by in a blur, work keeping you busy and your upcoming date with Bucky keeping you giddy. Bucky had a 24-hour shift on Thursday, so your date was scheduled for Saturday to give him some time to rest.
Saturday arrived and you couldn’t stop smiling. It seemed you had been doing that since you met him. Bucky showed up at your door on time and looking better than ever. The jeans he wore hugged his thick thighs perfectly and the buttons of his shirt were pulled tight across his muscled chest.
“You look gorgeous, doll.” Your heart goes aflutter in your chest, the use of the endearment never failing to make you swoon. “Thanks,” you reply shyly, taking his hand and heading out. Your second date is even better than the first, Bucky’s attentiveness something you weren’t used to. He just seems so perfect.
The end of night finds you pressed against your door, Bucky’s hard body flush to yours as he kisses you senseless. You pull away to take a breath, fiddling with the buttons on his shirt, “do you wanna come in?” Cupping your cheek, he quietly asks, “are you sure, y/n? I can wait if that’s what you want.” Running your fingers under his shirt you grab the waistband of his jeans, “I want you.”
His large hands fumble with the door, finally getting it open as you two practically fall inside. Your night together is better than anything you could imagine, and you wake up to another sunny day feeling more satisfied and happier than you have in a long time.
“Morning beautiful,” Bucky whispers against your hair, pulling your naked body closer to his. “Morning, Buck,” you giggle, kissing his chest. “What time do you have to be at work?” you ask, hoping it isn’t until later. “Unfortunately, I have the early shift today, I have to leave in a few,” he says sadly.
You unwillingly untangle yourselves and watch Bucky get dressed from your bed, appreciating his body in the morning light. He leaves you with kiss swollen lips and promises to call later. The rest of your morning is spent cleaning up your apartment and as you do so you find a treasure balled up in your bed from last night.
You shower and throw it on, sniffing the collar of Bucky’s tee shirt from the firehouse. It smells so good you don’t take it off for the rest of the day. And that’s how you find yourself, Bucky’s shirt hanging off your frame as you and Huckle strut down the block toward the firehouse. He had text you only a little while ago, saying he missed you and if you weren’t busy to come down for a visit.
You quickly responded and told him you’d be there in under and hour, baking some of your famous chocolate chip cookies before heading out. As you approach the firehouse you notice the garage door is open and Bucky is leaning against the frame, legs crossed over each other and scrolling through his phone.
He looks up at the sound of Huckle’s happy bark, his smile lighting up his face. You watch as his eyes drink you in, roaming over your body from head to toe, “hey, doll.” His arm snakes around your waist and he pulls you in for a toe-curling kiss, a breathy “hi,” leaving your lips afterwards. Bucky makes sure to say hi to Huckle, rubbing her all over before looking back to you.
You watch as his eyes land on your chest, widening slightly before they darken, “what are you wearing?” he asks, voice deep. You immediately panic, looking down and realizing he is referring to his tee shirt, “oh, this? You left it this morning and it’s so soft and smells like you, so I didn’t want to take it off…. I hope that’s ok,” you ask guiltily.
He crashes you to his chest, his nose rubbing against yours. “It’s more than ok doll, I love you in it, you can keep it.” Bucky brings his lips down to yours, his tongue parting your mouth as he deepens the kiss. You don’t even realize you have an audience until the very familiar voice of Wilson resonates through the open space, “looks like Barnes finally found himself a girl!” The next comment makes you both laugh enough to end your kiss, “and she brought us cookies!” yells Parker, rushing over to grab some.

***My fics are not to be saved or posted on any other sites without my written permission. Reblogs are my jam, though! Thanks!*
The morning went by fast. Faster than Y/n expected it to. Maybe it’s just that Y/n isn’t used to all this hustle on Thanksgiving. It’s been a long time since she had a Thanksgiving to celebrate with anyone. After her grandparents passed, she stopped cooking as much on the holidays and usually kept the shop open to pass the day. There isn’t much of a point in making some grand meal when it’s only her.
She does get pie though because it’s pie.
This year is nothing like she's used to. It started in Bucky’s bed, which isn’t anything new as of late, of course. She has a feeling it will become a permanent move here soon. For now, she’s okay bringing a bag over to spend a few days at a time. This morning though started with lazy kisses and slow touches. Quiet confessions of love, wanton whispers and soft panting that could only be heard by them.
The slow air of the morning ended not long after Ori flew through the front door with a flurry of excitement at noon, Steve, Sam and Ollie in tow behind her. After spending the night with her uncles, she was very excited to see her parents this morning. Ori helped Y/n with desserts because that’s the family dinner rules -- whoever hosts only does sweet treats and the turkey.
About a hundred cookies sit on the counter now because they may have gotten out of control. They do that when they are together. Bucky knows it’s better to stand back and let them do their thing. Meddling never ends well. In hindsight, Y/n probably should have stopped Ori at seventy and skipped the last batch. She looked so cute picking which cutters to use and was so excited to decorate each one Y/n couldn’t tell her to scale her baking back.
Thankfully Uncle Steve saves the day.
Un-iced cookies abandoned for another day in favor of playing. Ori is hanging off Steve’s arm, feet hanging several inches off the ground as she stares at the wall of bookcases that hold everything from movies to books to toys and family pictures. She’s mulling over which movie is best for after dinner because that’s tradition, too.
Everyone eats until they can’t move, and then they can’t move to go home. Clint takes the couch for the night. Sam and Steve bunk in the spare room and Natasha shares Ori’s bed for a night of cuddling. Which is why Y/n has apple pie and pumpkin cinnamon rolls for the morning and lots of coffee for Clint.
“This one, Uncle Stevie.”
Steve grins at his niece and takes Mary Poppins from her hand before she falls off his arm and scoops her up. He boops her nose with his making her giggle and he sighs dramatically, “Now how did I know you were going to pick this one? What if we pick a holiday one, Bucket?”
Ori thinks for a second, and her eyes light up with an idea.
“The Santa Clause!”
Steve grins and trades Mary Poppins for The Santa Clause.
“That is an excellent choice!”
Y/n sets her attention back to the pie in front of her -- now that the cookie adventure is over. Thankfully she prepped it yesterday, so it only needs a tweak to the streusel topping and placed in the oven. Bucky’s hand flitters along the edges of her dark blue skirt as he walks by, grazing the backs of her thighs and making her shiver. He smirks and shoots her a quick wink. He’s supposed to be tending to the turkey, not her, and she tells him so. There’s a dark chuckle rumbling through the room filled with more than humor, and it has her toes curling in her boots in want. Bucky abandons his flirting long enough to pull the turkey out of the oven.
Someone has to do the carving, or they will never eat.
A knock shuts the chatter down a bit. Someone at the door is strange, the whole family is already there. Bucky looks over just in time to see Tony sauntering inside, three white boxes in his hands that he’s quickly passing to Steve.
Perfect. Just perfect.
“Uh, Beck.”
“Hm?”
“What is Tony doing here?”
Her fingers freeze in the bowl of leftover streusel as Bucky’s arms wrap around her from behind. That deep voice resounds in her ear, and she can’t help but smile.
“Got somethin’ you need to share, sweetheart?”
So, she should have told him sooner, but sometimes surprises are good? Er, most of the time. This time they may not be.
“Okay, I know you guys don’t always get along, but he did throw our daughter a birthday party, and Pepper got stuck at some airport for work, so he was all alone. I couldn’t let him be all alone for Thanksgiving, Buck.”
Bucky smiles and kisses her cheek, letting his lips linger, and his arms tighten around her -- she’s always going out of her way for others, so why is he surprised it happened today?
“It’s fine. He’s not so bad.”
“There is this year’s hosts!” Tony says as he directs Steve where to place the boxes on the dining room table and grins at the couple. It was not that long ago, six months or so, that she was standing next to Tony. The thought makes her freeze as if Bucky can hear her thoughts. He knows. Everyone knows they dated, but sometimes the reminder is… sobering. The three of them stand in awkward silence. Bucky’s hand still resting on the small of her back.
For an open floor plan, the house feeling very, very small right now.
Y/n clears her throat and wipes her hands on the constellation towel hanging on the sink next to her. “It’s good to see you, Tony. How is Pepper doing? Did she get a hotel, at least?”
“Oh, yeah. I made sure Pep is taken care of. She's all set up with room service.”
The silence returns, and Bucky is about to ask if he can get Tony something to drink because he can’t handle this discomfiture a second longer. He has to do something other than just stand there, and then Tony cuts the tension by being… well, Tony.
“You know,” Tony chuckles softly and looks at Y/n. “I just realized you’ve seen both of us naked. Talk about awkward. Am I right, big guy?"
Bucky stiffens next to her and the hand on her lower back twitches. Yes, he knows they dated, and he assumes they were together in that sense; he doesn't want to think about it, and he definitely doesn't want to hear about it from Tony.
"Tony…"
Y/n leans into Bucky's side and glares at Tony. "I don't think that's really--"
"Who's bigger, you think?" Tony asks, glancing between Y/n and Bucky. "You know what? Nevermind. The look on your face says it all."
Tony grabs two un-iced turkey-shaped cookies off the copper baking sheet still resting on the island and saunters back into the kitchen, leaving the couple alone. Y/n sighs and glances at her boyfriend, who is starting at Tony with a look she’s only seen once or twice, and it’s only ever been directed at Tony.
“I’m going to beat his ass before the night is out.”
“Buck…”
“I’m serious, Y/n. I’m finally going to do it. This is my year.”
She shakes her head, smiling fondly because Bucky is all bark and no bite and places a kiss to his cheek. “Tony is trying to mess with you to get a rise out of you. Besides, weren’t you the one that saw me naked last night?’”
Bucky’s pout fades into a grin, and he pulls her firmly against him, gripping her chin between his thumb and index finger and locking eyes.
“And again, this mornin’.” Bucky reminds her.
“Yeah, this morning. This morning was…” She tugs on his hair gently and continues in a low, raspy whisper. “Good, but next time let’s try to wake the neighbors.”
Bucky leans in, so their noses are bumping, and he whispers, “Why don’t you put the sugary pie stuff down and come upstairs for a minute? There’s somethin’ I gotta show you.”
The exaggerated wink he’s gives her makes her laugh and squirm for a reason she can’t say out loud.
“Right now?”
Y/n’s eyes dart out to the group in the living room that is unaware of what the two are discussing next to gingerbread pumpkins.
“Yeah, right now, Beck.”
Bucky places a kiss to her cheek, followed by a lighter one to the line of her jaw and one on the corner of her mouth.
“Y/n?”
Bucky’s smirk falls at the sound of Ori’s voice, sending the moment to a crashing halt. His head drops onto her shoulder, muffling his groan as Y/n looks down at the little girl. Y/n somehow holds back her chuckle long enough to ask what the she needs.
“Yes, starlight? What’s up?”
“Did you really go on a date with Uncle Tony before daddy?”
Bucky’s head snaps up at Ori’s question. “Uncle Tony? Who the hell--”
Y/n pinches Bucky’s side, effectively shutting him up, at least in front of Ori.
“Where did you hear that?”
“Uncle Tony said that he took you on a date, and it was the best one you’ve ever been on. You had cheeseburger and if it wasn’t for him daddy would have never told you he loved you.”
Bucky starts towards the living room, but Y/n grabs him by the shirt. “Yes, I did, starlight, but I’ll let you in on a secret.”
Ori’s eyes light up at the promise of a secret, and she steps closer to hear it.
“I was so in love with your daddy back then no one else stood a chance. Uncle Tony included, and my best date was our trip to the zoo.” Ori grins and waits for the nod meaning she can spill the secret. The second she gets permission, she runs back into the living room to tell Tony what she learned, and they can hear Tony’s laugh followed by a, “You got me there, kiddo.”
“You were in love with me, huh?”
Y/n turns her attention back to Bucky, and he’s grinning like an idiot in love. She is too. Her cheeks hurt from the size of her smile. She leans into his Bucky’s arm and gives him a chaste kiss. With the look in Bucky’s eyes, if she gives him more than that, the pie will never make it into the oven.
“I thought that was pretty obvious by now. It just took me a while to see it.”
“Pie’s got about 10 minutes after you put it in, right?’
“Mmm, about twenty.”
Bucky hooks his fingers in the belt loops of her skirt walks back towards the half bath next to the laundry. He gently guides her into the tiny bathroom and shuts the door as quietly as he can, so they go unnoticed. Bucky grips her hips and hoists her up onto the sink, swallowing her yelp with a lingering kiss.
“What are we doing, Buck?” Y/n asks between pecks.
“Gonna spend a little time kissin’ you. That okay, Beck?”
“Yeah,” she whimpers when his fingers trail up her inner thigh. “That’s okay.”
Twenty or minutes pass, and no one has seen or heard from Bucky or Y/n. Steve comes into the kitchen, peeks out the back window. No host or hostess. The turkey is uncarved. The pie is cold on the counter, but everyone’s sides are warming nicely on the stove.
“Where the hell is Buck?”
Natasha smirks at Steve’s naivete and nods towards the closed bathroom door where a soft glow pouring out from the crack between the floor.
“I think they are talking.”
Sam snorts and whispers for the adults in the room, “Making out like a couple of horny teenagers, you mean.”
“They always like that?” Tony makes a face, and Sam nods, mirroring his disgust.
“Yeah, it’s gross. All the time, and it’s all I hear about at work.”
“Well, the pie is cold.” Clint pokes the cold crust with his pinky and pouts. “What are we supposed to do for pie!”
“Relax, Barton. I brought three pies.”
“Clint…” Sam tugs the foil off the white casserole dish they brought and bends down to sniff the red, brown, and yellow pile of mush. “What the hell did you make?”
“It’s a cheesy hot dog tater tot casserole!”
Clint’s grinning from ear to ear, giving off that excited puppy face he has when he tries a new recipe. Tony leans up on his toes to peer over Sam’s shoulder and winces at the pile of slop in filling the 12-inch baking dish.
“Good God, that looks… I’m gonna level with you. It looks gross, Clint.”
Natasha pinches the bridge of her nose, takes several deep breaths, and looks at her husband, “I thought we agreed on broccoli casserole? It’s traditional and easy enough for you to make. I deleted Pinterest on your phone for a reason!”
“Yeah, but then peanut and I went out for lunch that day we watched her, and we got chili cheese dogs, and we both agree they are way better than broccoli.”
Natasha looks down at Ori, who is holding her hand beaming brightly, and the little girl nods, confirming Clint’s story. “They are, Aunt Nattie.”
“You’re lucky you’re so cute.”
“Thanks.” Clint beams proudly.
“Not you.” Natasha is quick to correct him. “You’re in trouble when we get home.”
Clint wiggles his brows and wraps his arms around Natasha’s waist, placing a kiss to her cheek and whispers in her ear. “You promise, baby?”
“Your niece is right there.” Steve scolds with the expression of an exhausted dad who just wants his kids to behave long enough that he can take a nap. He’s just grateful his son is far too little to understand what they are saying and fast asleep in the playpen in the living room.
“It’s bad enough we’ve got those two locked in the bathroom when we should be eating dinner.”
Sam marches to the bathroom and pounds on the door with his fist, quietly shouting through the thin wood frame, “You’ve got two minutes to get your butts out here, or we are eating without you.”
It takes a few thumps, and lots of giggles, but Bucky and Y/n emerge from the bathroom, clothes rumbled and grinning like teenagers caught getting handsy. Bucky clears his throat and slips his arm around her waist, resting his hand on her stomach.
“Sorry. There’s a light bulb out, and I need help the screws.”
“Right,” Y/n nods, fighting off a smile. “The screws are a pain to get off.”
“I bet those screws can be hard to get off sometimes, huh?” Sam asks, grinning smugly.
“Maybe everyone should mind their own damn business?” Bucky shoves Sam away without any real force. “Ever think about that?”
“Daddy?” Bucky looks down at Ori standing next to Natasha, brow raised, waiting for her to continue. “Why are you wearing Y/n’s lipstick?”
Y/n giggles at the dumbstruck look on his face. She reaches over and swipes her thumb along Bucky’s lip, wiping away bright red lipstick. His cheeks pink when he catches everyone staring their way and the smirk on Natasha’s face. Tony goes to open his mouth, and Beck holds her hand up.
“Let’s go eat, hm? We can deal with the cold pie later.”
“I told you, the pie is always the one thing that gets ruined. That’s why I come with pie.”
Plates are grabbed, turkey is being cut as everyone moves about the kitchen in a hustle to grab their favorites; stuffing and rolls and turkey. All taking their respective seats -- the ones that Ori assigned with colorful turkeys she hand-painted with Uncle Stevie. Ori sits between Steve and Tony with Oliver sleeping close by. Sam heading up the table with Natasha and Clint across from Bucky and Y/n. Somehow Clint’s casserole made it to the center of the table for everyone to try despite the attempt to keep it hidden.
Something about sitting down around the table quiets everyone down. No one cares about hot dogs or lipstick stains. Ori’s giggling as Tony tries to get Steve to put a mini marshmallow in his nose. Steve sets Tony with a flat look and a resigned sigh, mumbling, don’t teach my niece to put food in her nose, Tony. Clint is pushing his hot dog mess on Natasha, who takes a scoop hiding a grimace behind her smile. Sam stares at the lump Clint sets on his plate, and Tony asks for a second scoop. Y/n leans back in her chair and takes in the sight in front of her.
Bucky leans over and kisses her cheek. “You okay, babydoll?”
“Yeah,” She sighs happily and leans against his shoulder. “I was just thinking this is a lot different than my last Thanksgiving is all. All the crazy is kind of nice.”
He grins and wraps his arm around her, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
“Yeah, the crazy is good, Beck. It’s all good.”
“Okay,” Tony silences the table with words that will no doubt be remembered till the end of time.
“The chili dog casserole is the winner.”
“Yes! High five peanut!”
Ori and Clint high-five across the table and Natasha hangs in her hand in her hands.
Summary: You want to decorate your house this Christmas and out do your neighbor but work gets in the way.
You're sitting in the snow right in front of your house. It's a nice half-of-an-inch of snow. The sun is out but it's cold. It's at least 30° outside. It's very comfortable as long you're wearing your parka and fuzzy socks and boots. You're also rocking a pair of black ripped skinny jeans cause you're feeling a bit risqué. It's all in the name of fashion and you didn't necessarily do your laundry since you've been very busy working at the mall as Santa's little helper in the mornings and while working retail from 12pm to anywhere at midnight or even to 3am.
Let's also not forget that you're also working at the tree farm on weekends just so you can have the extra dough to buy presents for everyone you know. You're very motivated to give a very merry Christmas to all... even if you might burn yourself out. You rather be doing it all with someone who is in love with Christmas and the holidays as much as you instead of working your butt off all alone to spread the cheer. They also have to be so in love with you and tall and just loves to get cozy on the couch watching Christmas movies with you. You want that Hallmark movie kind of love, especially if it's one of the Christmas ones. You're honestly such a hopeless romantic but you just want that special someone.
But back to what you're going to regret doing...
You've got your ladder that you might've stolen from your dad. It's pretty old. It's not necessarily safe at all. But hey, those Christmas lights at your side in a box aren't going up by themselves. Also, you are very ambitious in wanting to look extra AF. It's honestly your goal especially since the firefighter next door goes all out each year and it makes you so mad. You know it's petty, but that doesn't stop you from trying to beat him in this competition that you decided to start. After two years of living beside the hot firefighter who legit has a brigade to help him decorate, you're going to out do him. That's how you're going to spend your first day off in awhile, trying to beat the firefighter who makes you all warm and fuzzy inside.
"Shiznit.”
You get off your butt and head to the ladder.
"Don't you dare get on that ladder, dollface," a voice said from behind.
You turn around and see Bucky in his big black Chevy pickup truck. His window is down and he has this stern look on his face as he's pointing at you. You just whine throwing your head back. He drives into his driveway with this grin on his face. He might've gotten off of a shift at his station but he enjoys being around you.
He's amazed that you live alone and haven't burned your house down at how clumsy you are. He finds it very adorable and cute. He explicitly remembers when you accidentally tripped on air and fell face first on the sidewalk and broke your jaw while out with a friend getting lunch. Bucky was filling in for one of the paramedics that day (since he is also trained as a paramedic along with the firefighter training) and he was called to the scene. He still teases you about it whenever you trip around him and then he'll pull you into his side to "make sure you don't fall" but he loves having you close.
Bucky gets out of his car and walks across the lawns. The 6’2” firefighter stands before you simply wearing his station issued hoodie, jeans, and boots. You honestly wonder how he can be warm just wearing that. You want to bundle the man up in blankets and make sure he’s warm and cozy especially after work.
"I'm gonna go get my ladder and you stay put... fall risk," Bucky said stepping away.
You screamed and he laughed running. You get some snow and launched it at him. You miss by a foot which makes him laugh harder. He looks over his shoulder as he opens up his garage door and there you are still in your spot. You're arms are crossed over your chest pouting like the little girl he saved last week. She was so pissed off to be saved from the fire she created because she was cold and it happened to be cold outside as well. She was not a happy camper at all.
Bucky comes out of his garage easily carrying one of his metal ladders that look very heavy to you. You glare at him and he just gives you his award winning sparkly white smile. (That smile makes you feel things.) He sets up the ladder and takes down the old one setting it off to the side of the house.
"This wasn't in my plan," you said.
He grins and said, "I'm not gonna respond to another call with you breaking your jaw, doll."
"Excuse me?! That wasn't in my plans either!" You exclaimed.
"Doll, screw your plans ‘cause we both know they'll turn out badly. Just grab your lights and bring 'em over," Bucky said.
You grumbled and picked up the Amazon box filled with brand new lights. You lug them over to Bucky and plop them on the ground. He crouches down and starts looking through them.
"Hey, these are nice. They're fireproof!" Bucky exclaimed holding one up. "Brilliant choice, dollface!"
"See, I didn't want to burn my house down this year, James," you said putting your hands on your hips.
He chuckles remembering you thinking it was a great idea to try and fix your toaster which ended up on fire. You threw it out the closed window as Bucky was just getting home. It made him die laughing seeing the toaster on fire in your front yard and he easily put it out. He also put in your new window cause he didn't want you doing it like you had planned. He always seems to slap away your plans on home improvements and you know it's definitely for the best. Especially since you have big track record. You also know that he actually cares about your wellbeing and wants to make sure you don't do anything stupid where you could get hurt. He's just the most perfect person in the world for you but you’re a bit blind to see it.
"You want it along the edges?" Bucky asked.
You nodded and he smiled. He starts climbing up the ladder with the box of 70ft of multi colored lights. You watched and his behind looks amazing if you're going to be honest.
"What am I supposed to do?" You asked.
"Not look at my amazin’ plump ass," Bucky said.
"Hey! You said a bad word! This is a rated E property!" You said blushing.
He let out a hardy laughed and kept climbing.
"You're worse than my buddy Steve," Bucky said.
"You better take that back!" You yelled.
"What are ya gonna do, dollface? You gonna climb up here? We both know you can't throw a snowball for shit so that's out the door," Bucky called out teasing you.
You scoffed and your phone buzzes from your pocket. You pull it out and you're immediately heartbroken. You pout looking at the text.
"You okay, angel?" Bucky asked.
"I gotta go to work. One of Santa's helpers broke her leg and now I gotta go replace her," you whimpered looking up at him with this sad look on your face.
It made him frown. He enjoys your company even though you’re very clumsy. You have this look on your face as if you were a puppy that had been kicked to the side. He just wants to come down and wrap his arms around you and tell you that everything is going to be okay.
"You might as well stop. Christmas is fudgin’ ruined," you grumbled before disappearing inside to get the elf costume.
Bucky just shakes his head and immediately starts texting the boys. He isn't going to let you down. He's going to bring up your spirits even if it's the last thing he does because he's got it bad for you.
Soon enough, Steve, Sam, Clint, Scott, Luis, and even Natasha are pulling up. Bucky's already on your roof.
"I don't think that's your house," Sam said and he's the last one to come.
"It's my neighbor's!" Bucky said while Steve's climbing up the ladder with Clint holding it.
"What's so special about 'em?" Sam asked.
"Ya know, she's the one he talks about ALLLLLL the time," Scott said untangling the lights with Luis.
"Bro, was she the one to trip over nothing and break her jaw on the sidewalk?" Luis asked.
"Yes," Bucky said with a smirk.
Luis sighed with a smile and started going on and on with a story about his cousin who knows this guy. Luis was the other paramedic with Bucky that day even though it's usually him and Darcy. Darcy was out the day you broke your jaw visiting her BFF in London.
"What about your competition to out beat her in decorations?" Steve asked helping Bucky attach the lights to the peak of the roof.
"Well, this year, it's just Y/n. Usually, it's her dad and her brother puttin' up the lights but earlier she was the only one doin’ it," Bucky said quietly. "I wasn't gonna let her clumsy ass get on the roof and I'd have to rush her to the hospital with a broken leg or God forbid she cracks her head open."
"Awww, you care about her," Steve teased.
"No shit! She trips over nothin’!" Bucky said. "This girl is makin' me crazy. She'll be the death of me, Steve. Like I wanna wrap her up in bubble wrap just so she'll be safe and I don’t have to be concerned about her wellbeing as much."
Steve just smiles with this knowing look on his face.
"But Jesus, she can light up a whole room with her smile. She's got different ones like the one where it reaches her eyes when I tell her a joke or when she sees me,” Bucky said and he mimicked each smiles of yours as he kept talking about you.
Later In The Night..
You come home exhausted. You get out of your car wearing this elf costume which happens to look a lot like Emilia Clarke's in Last Christmas. You get blinded by the Christmas lights turning on. You covered your eyes with your hands.
"IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR!" Bucky sang.
You carefully removed your hands to find your house decked out in all types of decorations. It's your own little winter wonderland and there stands Bucky singing to the song. He’s not the greatest singer in the world but you can’t help but smile. He's standing in the middle of your yard wearing a full on Santa costume (with a very fake white beard) as a Bluetooth speaker plays the song, It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year by Andy Williams. It brings tears to your eyes and a smile to your face that reaches your eyes. You honestly cannot believe that Bucky did all of this for you. He no doubt enlisted his buddies to help him and it just makes your heart swell.
You race over to Bucky and nearly fall but he catches you. He lifts you up with ease and your arms wrapped around his neck and legs around his torso. You’re holding onto him tightly and your head gets buried into his neck.
“T-Thank you, James,” you said. “This means a lot to me and so do you.”
You lift your head with a smile on your face and looked at the man with the Santa hat. He just gets this huge grin on his face.
“You mean a whole hell of a lot to me too, Dollface,” Bucky said. “Words honestly cannot describe at how much it warms my heart to see you look so happy and I’m pretty god-dog-on happy that I was the one to get that smile on your face.”
You blushed fiercely and he could easily it with the lights shining around. You wanna cover your face.
“Look up,” Bucky said.
You look up to see it’s snowing once again and there’s mistletoe hanging from a branch of the tree in your front yard closest to the side walk. You gasped and looked back at Bucky. There’s this twinkling in his eyes as he looks at with a hesitant smile on his face. He’s never been this nervous but he’s throwing himself out there. And for you nonetheless.
“James,” you said.
“It’s tra—,” he started to say but the beard is pulled down.
Your red painted lips end up on his soft yet cold and slightly chapped lips. It’s sweet and minty like a candy cane and it’s only cause he had one before you arrived. You’ve got that very warm and fuzzy feeling deep in your bones and so does he. You finally got that cheesy hallmark movie. You know you definitely won’t let this man go anytime soon. You don’t want to pull away and neither does he but you both have to breath.
“Oh my god,” Bucky said smiling with this boyish grin and blushing with you.
“SOME PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO SLEEP!” Stan Lee, the neighbor across the street, yelled from his window.
“SORRY, MR. LEE!” Bucky yelled back.
“Come on. Let’s go inside,” you whispered softly and he let you down but he keeps you close.
MORE FIREMAN!BUCKY!!!!! Pleeeeaaaseee I’m begging you!!!!
Alright! Alright! Alright!
You asked for it! (I might’ve gotten a little choked up writing this)
MORE FIREMAN!BUCKY
When Bucky comes home from his shift all the lights in your Brooklyn loft are out. There’s a sticky note on the microwave door letting him know there’s dinner for him in the fridge and how long he needs to reheat it.
He always makes sure to stop the microwave with 0:01 time remaining so that it doesn’t beep. He knows you’ve gotta get up early for work tomorrow so he does his best to keep all of his movements as quiet as possible.
Scarfing down dinner, and putting his plate and cutlery in the dishwasher he heads down the hall to shower. The stiffness in his shoulders and back is finally starting to set in. His schedule is four days on four days off, this was his last night this week and although they hadn’t been called out there’s always work at the station to be done and fire hoses are heavier than they look, and his bed at the station is not comfortable at all.
Doing his best to dry his hair off he enters your shared bedroom, silently changing into the sweat pants you left at the end of the bed for him.
It’s nearing 4am and the light from the street lamps below casts shadows on the walls. You’re as beautiful as ever and he’s so glad he gets to come home to you.
Your shared bed is much bigger, much softer and much warmer than the one at the station, but best of all it has you in it. Bucky doesn’t waste a second slipping into bed and getting comfy, being sure to pull you close. In your sleep you nuzzle against his chest, instinctively finding the new source of warmth.
He loves his job, but he’s glad to be home, to hold you again.
In the morning, you press a kiss to his stable covered cheek before slipping into your daily routine.
when you return home from work, kicking your shoes off at the door Bucky is in the kitchen, music playing from the living room speakers as he prepares dinner.
There are glasses and a bottle of wine on the dining room table, and Bucky is flipping grilled cheese sandwiches.
“They’re fancy today babe,” he tells you as you wrap your arms around his waist, “I used two types of cheese and bacon”
A/N: The end is finally here!! I’ve loved this story and I love that others have loved it just as much!!! IT MAKES ME SO 😭🥺😭 Feedback is always loved and appreciated 💘
Three years later...
“Miss Y/N?” You hummed, glancing up from the worksheet in front of MJ and looking at her. “That guy over there is staring at you.” You followed her eyes to the other side of the lunch room, where a tall, blue-eyed brunet stood, his eyes already locked on you.
You grinned and pushed yourself up from the table.
“Thanks, MJ—”
“It’s kinda creepy. Do ya want me to take care of him? I just got my yellow belt in karate.” You laughed softly and shook your head.
“That’s alright,” you winked, “I know his weak spots.”
“Okay…” she murmured, unconvinced by your dismissal of her offer. You left the table of kids to finish coloring their pictures and walked over to him.
“I just saved you from an eight-year-old with her yellow belt, ya know?”
“You didn’t wake me up this morning before you left.” You grinned and sighed softly, placing your hand on his forearm.
“You got home late and you needed to sleep.” Bucky gave you another unimpressed look. “Don’t give me that look. And uncross your arms. I know you’re not really mad.” Bucky’s demeanor shifted, and he sighed, his arms dropping to his sides.
“I didn’t get a kiss this morning…” He whined quietly, a pout on his face. You rolled your eyes good naturedly and grabbed his hand.
“C’mon…” You glanced around the lunch room, making sure that the other adults had the second-graders covered, and dragged Bucky down the hall towards the break room. You turned the handle and walked into the empty room that still smelled faintly of coffee from this morning, and pulled Bucky in, shutting the door behind him. You smiled at him. “You get one kiss.”
He smiled back, wrapping his hands around your hips and pulling you closer to him as he captured your lips. His scruff scratched against your hands wonderfully, and you leaned more into him, realizing that, maybe, you needed a kiss this morning, too. You hummed and placed a final chaste kiss on his lips, “Better?” He gave you a dopey grin and nodded.
“Mm-hmm. I’m not mad anymore.” You snorted and dropped your hands to his forearms. His hands moved to your round stomach and he rubbed his hand over the fabric of your shirt. “How’re you feelin’?”
You hummed and looked down at your belly. “He’s very comfortable on my bladder today. I’ve hadta pee about ten times since I got here.” Bucky sighed and you looked at him, but he kept his eyes on your stomach.
“Dude… I thought we talked about this.” You laughed, attracting Bucky’s attention, who looked back at you with a grin. “Do you want me to have another father-son talk with him tonight?”
It took Bucky a long time to get to this point; the point where he could enjoy the pregnancy and not worry over everything that happened to you. Truthfully, it took you a while, too, but you knew two stressed out parents wasn’t going to help, especially when your doctor had assured you that everything about your pregnancy was normal.
Healthy and normal.
Once you found out you were having a boy, and were further along than your last pregnancy, Bucky started to relax.
If only a little.
He still rushed to call the doctor each time you had any type of discomfort, even if you assured him it was just indigestion, and you still found him Googling every doubt he had, late at night when he couldn’t sleep.
The only thing that hadn’t changed since you found out you were pregnant, were the talks he’d have with your stomach every night (and some mornings when he’d spent too much time reading about all the terrible things that could happen and couldn’t fall back asleep).
The mornings when you pretended to still be asleep were your favorite talks. Bucky opened his heart, letting all of his fears and worries seep out as he whispered his love for your unborn baby in your belly.
“Would you?” Bucky grinned and rubbed his thumb over your belly. He slid his hands back around you, settling on your lower back, and leaned in and kissed your lips just as the door burst open. You both jumped and looked over at MJ, whose eyes were as wide as saucers. Bucky quickly dropped his hands from your ass and you walked over to her.
“Were you kis—”
“Okay, let’s go see if everything’s set up for the presentation!” You ushered her out and back towards the lunch room. The kids were starting to get situated in rows on the floor near the small stage at the front of the room. “Oh, you better find a spot!” She eyed you skeptically, but did as she was told, choosing to sit next to Peter in the last row.
Steve, Clint, and now Bucky, were off the side of the room, pulling their gear from their bags.
You walked over to them and smiled. “Hey, guys! Thanks again for doing this! I know the kids are excited.” Clint chuckled and looked over at you.
“Yeah, kinda hard to say ‘no’ when your husband threatened us if we didn’t do it.” Your raised your brows and you glanced at Bucky, whose eyes were wide as he shot a look to Clint.
“I didn’t do anything!” You hummed and Bucky looked back at you. “I didn’t!” You hummed again, a small grin on your face that convinced Bucky you didn’t believe him in the slightest. Steve chuckled and pulled out a reel of reflective stickers for after the presentation.
“We’re happy to do it, Sunshine.” You grinned at Steve and laid your hand over your stomach. “But Buck definitely threatened us.” Bucky scoffed disbelievingly at his so called “friend”. You giggled as Bucky stared down the blond. “Oh, and don’t let me forget: I’ve got the swing in the back of my truck, so I’ll load it into your car before we leave.”
“Oh, good! I might have you put in Buck’s truck, though. My trunk is still full of the baby clothes you guys gave us.” You grimaced as Steve chuckled at you.
“It’s okay. We gave ya a lot.”
“And Bucky won’t even let me carry the clothes in by myself.” Bucky gave you a faux-offended look that slowly turned into a grin.
“Uh-huh. Sure.” You giggled and rubbed his back.
“I’m gonna go introduce you guys, so we can get started.” Bucky nodded and watched you as you made your way up on the small platform. You held up your hand, signaling for everyone to quiet down and listen to you. You waited until all the kids were quiet, each holding up a hand to show they were watching you. You smiled and put your hand down. “I know you’re all excited to hear from our guests today, so I’ll be quick,” you waved the guys up on stage. “Let’s all welcome my friends, and I’ll let Captain Rogers take it from here!” You smiled at Steve and stepped off the stage, moving to the side with the other teachers and aides.
Steve smiled at the kids, “Hi, everyone! So, I’m Captain Steve Rogers and I help run the fire department here in Esterwind,” he looked over at Bucky.
“And I’m Lieutenant James Barnes.”
“And I’m Lieutenant Clint Barton.”
Steve gave a passionate presentation on fire safety (Sharon had warned you that you may have to cut him off if he went on for too long) and Bucky and Clint acted as perfect assistants, who helped demonstrate what they needed to do when there was a fire, and how quickly they could put on their gear when there was a call.
After thirty minutes of Steve talking, you caught his attention and signaled for him to start wrapping up.
“Oh, looks like I’ve gotta stop talking. Okay, real quick before we do any questions, I want you guys to tell me what you do if there’s a fire?”
“Get down low, and go, go, go!” The kids bellowed back to Steve. He smiled and gave two big thumbs up and you came back to the stage to direct questions.
“Okay, we can do a few questions before they have to leave.” Almost every hand shot up. The guys chuckled and you started selecting kids for questions. Most of the questions were “what would’s” and “what-ifs”, but the guys handled them with ease.
You noticed MJ kept her hand up the entire time, so you decided she could be the last question.
“This is for Lieutenant Barnes.” Bucky’s ears perked at the sound of his name, and he quickly found the source of the question. “Why were you kissing Miss Y/N?” The other kids all squealed and laughed as your cheeks started to burn. Bucky’s eyes went wide and he quickly looked at you as Steve and Clint bit back laughs.
“Oh, uh, I, uh, I…” You groaned softly to yourself, accepting that MJ hadn’t bought your distraction earlier, and cleared your throat.
“MJ, Lieutenant Barnes and I are married.” The kids “ooo’d” and you cringed internally. “Alright, let’s thank our guests for coming today!” You quickly rushed through, hoping that the kids would stop squealing over the fact that MJ had seen you and Bucky kiss. The teachers rounded up the kids in their classes’ and the commotion subtlety shifted as the kids walked back to their homerooms to hand out the stickers that Steve brought.
Hopefully, the excitement of Miss Y/N kissing someone at school wouldn’t last through the end of the day.
You pulled into the drive, and Bucky’s truck was already parked. You turned off your car and slowly pushed yourself out and waddled up the steps into the house. You expected to see Bucky half-asleep on the couch, but he wasn’t. You heard music upstairs and slowly made your ascent, setting your bag on the bench near the door.
You walked down the hall to find the nursery door open, with Bucky sitting on the floor, putting together the crib. You leaned against the doorframe and watched with a warm grin. He let out a long sigh and scratched his head as he looked at the pieces in front of him. Now, where did that piece go?
“Directions are usually helpful.” Bucky’s head snapped back around as you smiled at him. “Probably why they give ‘em to you.” Bucky huffed and rolled his eyes.
“I think I can handle it, babe.” You hummed and moved into the room, slowly bending to pick up the instructions on the floor before sitting in the rocking chair in the corner of the room. You laid the booklet on your belly as you skimmed through it. Bucky turned the music on his phone off and walked on his knees until he was in front of you.
“You sure about that?” Bucky snatched the directions from your hands, his eyes wide and a grin spread across his face.
“Yes, dear, I am.” He tossed the directions back on the floor and sat on his knees in between your legs, tenderly gripping your thighs. You grinned and leaned forward to place a chaste kiss on his lips. “How was the rest of your day?” You hummed and ran your fingers through his hair, staring at the brown locks in between your fingers.
“You need a haircut soon.” You murmured softly, running your fingers through once more before looking at him. “It was good. The kids finally stopped talking about ‘Miss Y/N kissing the firefighter’ by the end of the day, so hopefully no parents’ call tonight.” He laughed as you leaned back in the rocker, smiling warmly at him. “How was yours? Did you get a nap in?”
“Nah, I didn’t have the time. Had to go trim some of the brush up at the Grove, and then I came back here.” Bucky sighed and looked back at the crib, tilting his head. “Does that piece look backwards to you?” You tilted your head, mirroring Bucky, and looked at the rail and headboard he had finished assembling.
“Kinda.” Bucky sighed again, and dropped his shoulders in defeat. “It’s okay! He won’t need a crib for a few months anyways! We’ve got time, honey.” Bucky looked back you to see a warm and patient smile on your face.
“No, I’m gonna get it done before he’s here. I told ya I would, so I will.”
“Can I help you, at least? I don’t want you stressing yourself out over it.”
“Deal.” You grinned at one another until you were interrupted by Bucky’s phone ringing. He groaned and pulled it out of his back pocket.
“Who is it?”
He glanced at the screen, “Steve.” You nodded in acknowledgment as Bucky answered. “Hey, Steve.” He moved so he was sitting beside your legs. “Oh, uh, yeah, I didn’t ask.” Your brows pinched as you listened in. “’Cause I know she won’t want to.” You nudged your foot against Bucky so that he’d look at you.
“Are you talking about me?” You spoke softly.
“Hold on,” Bucky sighed and held the phone away from his mouth. “Everyone’s going to Peg’s for dinner. I told Steve you wouldn’t wanna go ‘cause you’re tired.”
“I’m not tired. We can go!” Bucky didn’t say anything as he stared at you, his brow slowly arching.
“…You’re sure?” You were getting less and less sleep every night, your stomach too big to get comfortable enough to sleep peacefully. You gave him a soft look.
“Yes, Buck. I’m sure.”
“You’re not tired?”
“I’m 40 weeks pregnant; I’m always tired.” Bucky kept his brow raised, and you sighed. “I’m gonna change. Tell Steve we’ll just hang out with Sharon and Eli. She texted me that she found some more clothes she wants me to look through.” You pushed yourself up and stepped around Bucky and walked down the hall to your bedroom so you could change.
Bucky sighed and put the phone back to his ear.
“She wants to go,” Steve laughed, “I guess Sharon texted her that she found more baby clothes, so we’ll just hang out at your house until dinner.”
“I told you she’d wanna go.”
“I know…. Silly me for thinking she’d wanna rest.” Bucky rubbed his hand over his face.
“James.” He hummed and turned his head over his shoulder to look at you in the doorway. “I don’t think we should go tonight.”
“You don’? Why’dya change your—”
“My water broke.”
Bucky blinked.
Your water broke.
“Hey, Steve?”
“Yeah?”
“Change of plans. We’re not goin’ tonight. Uh, Y/N’s water just broke, so I gotta go.” Steve started exclaiming as Bucky ended the call and quickly scrambled to stand and helped you walk down the stairs. He grabbed the go bag in the coat closet as you grabbed your purse. His grip tightened on the straps of the duffle bag as he placed his hand on your lower back and walked with you to your car. He opened the passenger door for you and grabbed his forearm.
“We’re having a baby.” Bucky beamed at you as nervous tears streamed down your face. Bucky dropped the bag on the grass and cradled your face.
“We’re havin’ a baby.” He kissed your lips and wiped away your fears.
You didn’t have a perfect love story. It was full of dark twists and turns and years of hurt that consumed you both….
… but those moments brought you here. Brought you back together.
Summary: Bucky clears your apartment building and then saves your life from a fire.
It was cleaning day, the most dreaded day of the week, which meant to combat your laziness and not wanting to do anything all day you blasted only top hits through your loft you could jam too. You’d been putting this off for awhile so there was quite the buildup of clutter and dishes.
You danced around your kitchen, bright yellow gloves on with a sponge in hand as you belted the lyrics to “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood. You stopped between breaths to actually scrub the countertops, you were in a giant Patriots t shirt that used to be your dads and panties. It was a warm day so you had the windows open to air out the loft.
“AND I DUG MY KEY INTO THE SI-“ a hand came down on your shoulder and you let out a shrill scream.
You spun on your heel and hurled the blue sponge towards your attacker. It landed square in the face of a very handsome and amused fireman, his blue eyes shocked as he looked down at the object that had just been launched into his face.
Your hands covered your mouth, “I am SO sorry!”
You rushed to pause the music and he laughed, you spun around facing him then suddenly realizing you were only wearing a t shirt and panties.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to frighten you doll. We’re gonna have to ask you to evacuate the building as there’s a gas leak.” The cute fireman grinned cheekily at you
Your cheeks engulfed in flames, you nodded but didn’t move from where you were standing.
“I, um, I just need to put some pants on and grab a few things.”
His eyes strayed down from your gaze for a split second before his grin got a bit wider and his cheeks tinged pink. God why did he have to be so damn cute?
“Yeah, doll, it might be a few days before they can clear the building for civilians to be back in,” his voice was gravelly and warm.
His blue eyes were so hypnotizing, the cheeky grin, and that shoulder-length brown hair, god this man was sex on a damn stick. You forced yourself to look away and peel the rubber gloves off your hands, realizing how ridiculous you must have looked.
“Doll?” He asked bringing me back to the present.
“Yeah, um, I’m gonna need you to not look while I run to my bedroom,” You squeaked, not meeting his eyes.
Cute fireman grinned cheekily and then placed a gloved hand over his eyes, you darted for your room and stuck your legs into a pair of leggings in record time. You grabbed your necessities and shoved them into a bag, slid your feet into Birkenstock’s and walked back into the living room. He was still there and he was playing with the interlocking burr puzzle that normally sat on your coffee table, his eyes squinted and his tongue sticking out of the corner of his mouth in concentration.
“You’re still here?” You asked curiously.
His eyes shot to yours and he grinned as he set the puzzle down on the coffee table and pulled out a notepad.
“Yeah, I have to get names and phone numbers of residents so we can call when the building is cleared. I’m Bucky, by the way,” he stuck his hand out.
“I’m Y/N Y/L/N.” You said softly.
When you shook Bucky’s hand, butterflies shot through you at the contact. You forced yourself to let go of his hand and calmly recite your phone number for him, trying not to focus on how nervous he made you.
“Alright, as much as I hate for the live concert to end. Let’s get you outta here, Y/N,” Bucky teased as he led you out of your loft.
“I’m never playing music again,” Y/N groaned, your hand covering your eyes.
Bucky walked by your side down the stairs, other firemen passing nodded at him and some glanced at you curiously.
“No, really, I hated to interrupt the most beautiful rendition of Carrie Underwood I’ve ever seen,” he bumped your shoulder playfully.
You glared at him playfully and bumped him back, cheeks still pink but you were smiling. He tucked some of the chestnut strands in his face behind his ear, and that simple movement was mesmerizing.
“Ya know, technically you owe me ticket money for sneaking into a live show like that,” You snarked as you reached the sidewalk.
His mouth popped open into an mock offended ‘O’ and he placed a hand on his chest theatrically.
“I just saved your life from a gas leak! Call it even?”
You giggled and his grin sent a shot of pleasure through your body as you shook your head.
“Hmmmm, we’ll see about that, Mr Fireman. I’ll think about it,” You teased.
“Alright, doll, I have to go back and clear more residents but we’ll give you a call when the building is clear. You keep that concert going for me alright?” He winked at you before turning back to the building.
You pulled out your phone and called your best friend, Wanda, to see if you could stay with her for a few days. She of course agreed and said that Nat had a few days off of work so it would be like a long girls night. After ordering an Uber you played on your phone as you waited for your ride to arrive, glancing up to see if any of the firemen mulling around were Bucky. None of the ones already outside were Bucky but you could hear them talking about a Captain Barnes being back to his old self.
The car finally got there and you slid into the back seat and got settled, looking out the window as the car pulled away from the curb. You saw Bucky coming out with an elderly man from the third floor, he was carrying a bag for him and helping him into a cab. His smile was kind and his eyes were warm as he teased the old man.
After a few seconds you couldn’t see him anymore and you slouched back into the seat, playing on your phone for the twenty minute ride to Nat and Wanda’s apartment. Wanda was waiting outside for you when you got there, she clapped excitedly when you got out and you rolled your eyes. She had already told Clint, the head of security that she would have a gues for the next couple of days.
You and Wanda bickered on what show to watch before you both settled on watching Friends while Nat ordered Chinese food and poured red wine. When she got off the phone she handed you a glass of red and settled back on the couch.
“So, why are you stranded on our couch for a few days?” She asked, taking a sip of wine.
“Gas leak in the building, they’re supposed to call when it’s clear.”
“Wasn’t today cleaning day?” Wanda asked, her eyes glued to the screen.
You flushed, god you did not want to relive this story but you were going to have to tell them.
“Yeah, about that... a very handsome fireman saw me dancing around and belting Carrie Underwood in just my t shirt and panties.” Y/N squeaked, sinking down into the cushions.
Wanda immediately paused the episode and turned to you with excitement all over her face.
“What?!”
“Yeah and then I hit him in the face with a sponge because he scared me,” You groaned, hand over your eyes.
Nat roared with laughter from the other couch, and Wanda seemed to be struggling not to join her.
“It’s not funny, it’s HUMILIATING!” You griped which only made Wanda dissolve into a fit of laughter and Nat literally double over.
You covered your face with a throw pillow and groaned loudly, that was NOT the introduction you wanted to a hot fireman. You removed the pillow and just glued your eyes to the tv, Y/N could admit if it wasn’t you that it happened to you definitely would be laughing.
“What did he SAY?” Nat got out between fits of laughter.
“Well he did say it was the best rendition of Carrie Underwood he had ever heard,” You snarked.
“He was totally flirting with you!!” Wanda exclaimed and Nat nodded her agreement.
You rolled your eyes dramatically, Wanda wanted so badly to find you a boyfriend after her and Vis got together. She wanted someone to double date with, unfortunately for her you self-sabotaged more than anyone else on the planet. Every single date she set you up on you had effectively made sure that they didn’t want a second one, it was more to do with personal issues than anything else. You were terrified of being in a relationship after your last boyfriend.
“Wanda. He was not flirting with me.”
Nat watched Wanda with amusement dancing in her eyes as the girl’s eyes basically bugged out of her head with disbelief.
“He walked in on you dancing in your underwear, belting Carrie Underwood in NO makeup. And you hit him in the FACE with a sponge. But he still managed to tease you. He was flirting with you but go off.” Wanda snarked.
You took a huge gulp of your wine and groaned, this wasn’t gonna end. Nat grinned from the other couch at you, she finally had told Wanda that she wasn’t interested in dating until after she came to terms with some emotional baggage. Unfortunately for you, that’s the only excuse that Wanda accepted and you couldn’t use it.
“I hate you.” You stated and snagged the remote to resume the episode.
“You love me. And you know I’m right,” she huffed.
“Wrong.” You rolled your eyes again.
Wanda made a disgruntled hmph sound and let us get back to Friends, you snuck a glance at Nat who discreetly shook her head at you while she grinned. We loved our friend but she was the absolute worst at meddling.

It had been three days since the gas leak in the building, which meant three whole days of Wanda pestering you about Bucky. You’d called the landlord to see if it was over with and he said they were waiting to be cleared for civilians.
Finally deciding to do something worth your time, you were tapping away at the keys on your computer working on a report for work. Sam had been bugging you about it for a few days and you finally had the time to work on it.
You hit the green button and answered with a slightly annoyed, “hello?”
“Um, hey, is this Y/N Y/L/N?” A familiar voice asked down the line.
“Yes, who is this?”
“Oh, good, uh this is Bucky. Um, Captain Barnes from the Fire Department. Your apartment building has been cleared for civilians,” his rich voice sounded like silk through the phone.
“Oh, okay. Well thank you for calling! And again so sorry for hitting you in the face with a sponge,” You rambled, cheeks tinging pink even though he couldn’t see them.
“Like I said, most beautiful version of Carrie Underwood I’ve ever heard. I’d love to catch another live concert sometime,” he chuckled and butterflies fluttered in your stomach.
“I’ll consider sending tickets for the next one,” You joked and his snort was the most adorable sound you’d ever heard.
“Anyways, I’ve got another thirty of these calls to make Y/N, so I’ll let you go. But, seriously, keep the concert going dollface.” Bucky didn’t sound thrilled at all about making calls all, you giggled to yourself thinking of all the neighbors he was probably calling.
“Have fun with that, Mrs. Jenkins is a real treat.” You teased and he laughed again.
“Bye, Y/N,” his rich timbre sounding down the line one last time.
“Bye Bucky.”

“Y/N,” Sam called.
Your head shot up, you’d been totally zoned out for the last five minutes of whatever conversation you’d been pretending to be involved with. Bucky had not left your mind at all, his twinkling blue eyes, charismatic smile, that fucking boyish brown hair. It was doing a number on you that even you had to admit was embarrassing.
“Sorry, Sam, my mind is elsewhere. What can I do?” You smiled sheepishly at your favorite coworker.
He scoffed and the muttered a passive “nevermind” before leaving your office. It was only mid-morning so you were heavily engrossed in paperwork, one of your biggest clients had a massive family turmoil so they were changing their will so they were taking forever to get everything changed. You were back and forth on the phone, gathering documents and legal questions for you to answer and them change their mind.
The fire alarm started going off, the red light flashing and then the automated voice came over the speaker. You rolled your eyes annoyed, stuck your head out of your office door and yelled if it was a drill or not. Stacy from two office down called back that it was the 25th so it was probably a drill. You sat back down at your desk, and got back to gathering the stuff you needed for your 2o’clock meeting. Ten minutes had passed before you noticed the smoke coming through the bottom of your door.
The smell finally reached your nostrils before you leapt from your office chair and rushed to the door. It was NOT a drill, there was an actual fire on your office. Panickedly remembering the doorknob rule, you held the back of your hand to the knob. Cold. You flung the door open and rushed to alert Stacy, screaming for her to quickly come out.
The both of you rushed to the stairwell and flung it open, it was filled with smoke. It was so thick that you couldn’t see through it. You were on the third floor, it was an older building which meant. One stairwell. The window was your only option.
“We have to try and signal someone from the window,” you dragged Stacy to your office and struggled with the blinds in a panic.
You flung the window open and looked down at the street, you could see firefighters killing around at the bottom.
“HEY UP HERE!! WE’RE STUCK! HELP!” Stacy yelled, her grip on your arm deathly strong.
“HELP, SOMEBODY HELP US! PLEASE HELP!”
No one looked up, it was like they couldn’t hear over the sirens. You waved frantically before you spotted a familiar mop of boyish brown hair, it couldn’t be.
“BUCKY!! BUCKY HELP US!” You screamed as loud as you could.
His head shot up, glancing around before actually looking up and spotting the two of you.
“Y/N?!?!”
He frantically called for someone to shut off the siren and get the ladder before calling back up to you.
“DOLL, JUST HANG ON FOR ME, I’M COMING TO GET YOU!”
The smoke in the office was getting thicker, Stacy was coughing and hacking, her hand pressed to her chest. You moved back so she could get a breath of clean air, you remembered that she had asthma and you couldn’t live with yourself for making her sick or causing a really bad attack. The door was shut but the smoke was still coming through and it was thick. You peeked over Stacy’s shoulder and saw a ladder coming up to the window, you let out a sigh of relief when you saw Bucky on it.
He reached the window and you shoved Stacy towards him, “She has asthma take her first.”
Bucky looked back and forth between the two of you, he looked torn but you weren’t having any part of it.
“Take her, I’ll be fine. Promise.”
His mouth set in a line, he assisted Stacy onto the ladder and lowered them back down. You nervously chewed your lip while trying to breathe as much clean air as possible, unable to keep from coughing. You leaned heavily against the window, it was getting harder and harder to breathe.
“Y/N, DOLL, HANG ON. DON’T YOU CLOSE THOSE PRETTY EYES FOR ME. IM ALMOST THERE.” You could hear Bucky frantically calling but it was like there was a fog on your brain.
It was so hard to breathe and you were so tired, you rested your head against the window pane. You nodded to him but you didn’t know if you could keep them open, he was no more than a couple feet from you. You could hear him swearing and saw him reaching for you. And that’s when you collapsed.

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.
God whatever that incessant beeping was it needed to stop immediately, you thought to yourself. You blinked your eyes open, and realized that not only were you not in your bed but you were in a hospital room. You shot up and groaned almost instantly at the pain that shot through your head, the rhythmic beeping started increasing to a more frantic speed when the door open.
Bucky walked in holding a cup of coffee, whistling quietly to himself. His blue eyes found yours and widened almost comically before he rushed over to you.
“Y/N, doll, how are you feeling?” He asked, ushering you to lay back on the reclined bed.
“I... what happened? I remember telling you to get Stacy but that’s it.” You scratched your head as you squinted.
“You passed out and then hit your head really fucking hard on the window sill in your office, you have a concussion and a few stitches. I climbed in and got you out and brought you here myself.” Bucky explained, his fingers brushing along the top of your forehead. And that explained the pounding headache.
“Great.” You groaned.
“Y/N, you shouldn’t have even been in the building still.” Bucky’s tone was now stern.
You flushed and looked down at your hands, no you shouldn’t have been in the building still but you were an idiot. A massive fucking idiot.
“I know. Me and Stace thought it was a drill so we just stayed up there. And then I noticed some smoke so I ran to go get her and we tried to go down the stairs but I couldn’t even see the smoke was so thick. And so then we tried the window. No one could hear us yelling but then I saw you and so I just started screaming your name.” You trailed off, he had every right to yell at you and so you tensed waiting for it.
Bucky grabbed your hand and caressed the back of it softly, you slowly raised your eyes to his and he was smiling.
“It’s okay, you’re okay. Stacy is fine. She got some oxygen at the scene and got to go home. You got a fun ride in a fire truck with me screaming for Steve to hurry up and fucking drive. Carried you in here. Caused a huge scene. I mean I couldn’t let me favorite singer die on me without giving me a full concert first,” he teased.
You flushed. “Now I really owe you a concert huh?”
He grinned and the heart monitor gave you away as your heart started thumping faster. Bucky winked cheekily at you and you bit your lip, his eyes tracked the movement and he leaned in slightly. His blue eyes flicking back up to yours as if for approval, whatever he saw there was all he needed to close the distance.
His lips pressed to yours and the butterflies in your stomach turned into pterodactyls, you parted your lips slightly and Bucky took the invitation. His tongue swiped against yours and you let out a small whimper against his mouth.
And at that moment the door flung open and a nurse walked in, Bucky quickly pulled back from you.
“Oh!! Sorry I just need to check vitals. Glad to see you’re awake, ma’am.”
She worked quickly and you watched as she checked your vitals and wrote them in your chart before she excused herself and murmured something about the doctor being by shortly.
You and Bucky stared at each other before both trying to speak at once.
“Will you go to dinner with me?”
“I can’t stop thinking about you.”
You both laughed and grinned at each other, Bucky leaned in and pressed his lips gently to yours.
“I have to go back to work, but doll I’ll be back right after my shift is over. And I’m taking you out to dinner.” His lips grazing your forehead.
You flushed and nodded, and watched his sexy ass walk out of the door and definitely catching the cheeky wink he threw behind him.
