tommy wasnt just “participating in wars” he was literally actively starting them and provoking people. the disc war started because of him killing ponk and alyssa. l’manberg started because he and wilbur were trying to make a fucking drug empire by stealing and lying. he wanted to assassinate manbergs president. he burned down the dream smps kings house. he tried to blackmail and threaten me when i offered a more peaceful solution. you wanna know the difference between tommy and everyone else who participated in the wars? everyone else fucking stopped!!

Today there’s almost no smoke whatsoever in my area, and the sunlight is the clearest it’s been in over a week. Still doesn’t mean things are all clear, but it’s nice to see blue skies again.

“Well, the fires are terrible but when we evacuated we went to stay with some relatives that I haven’t seen in a while because of COVID, so it was nice to see them!” — my mom’s coworker at this ‘how’s everyone doing?’ check-in.

“During the fires in August my parents were evacuated to come stay with us, and during these fires we were evacuated and went to stay with them. It’s nice to have family in the area” —a different coworker

One heartening/horrible thing about high-lethality fires is the causes are the same every time:

Not enough fire doors. Doors open inward. They are locked, or blocked.

Fire doors hard to find: down odd corridors, not lit. Customer spaces are buried inside the building, far from windows and doors. Route to exits blocked, locked, burnt early in the fire.

Large amounts of combustible materials lying around

Renovations which did not consider the building holistically. Building now has vents which pull air around the building, or exterior cladding which immediately catches light all the way up the building. The air and fire moves in ways no one anticipated.

No fire alarms. Insufficient fire alarms. Alarm not raised quickly or comprehensively enough.

One horrible accident causing a small fire

Local authority passes laws to prevent this happening again. However, lack of centralised international government means the same tragedy happens again a year later in another town, state or nation.

To celebrate my new special interest in high-lethality fires, here's your semi-regular reminder to

check your fire alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are working

(press "test" and see if it makes a horrifying sound)

Now:

google for local fire prevention advice (my brigade gives away free detectors & home visits)

Make a fire escape plan with people you live with.

Ensure clutter is away from doors and escape routes; ensure doors have the key in them, or can be easily opened from the inside.

Get a carbon monoxide detector if you haven't already. Get multiple smoke alarms and fit them correctly.

Consider accessibility needs for the people you live with.

FIRES ARE DARK. Can you put a nightlight near exit doors? One thing I was surprised and disturbed to learn was how quickly smoke makes visibility impossible, hence the requirement for clubs and theatres to install ugly, ambience-destroying glowing EXIT signs

When you are out and about in public spaces, be aware of the location of fire doors etc and leave spaces which feel unsafe.

I had a dream that I saw what I thought was a shooting star and wished for my boyfriend to be back. Turned out to be a flaming fish kite. Sounds about right. I guess he's never coming back, or else he's making flaming fish kite and getting in trouble for accidentally setting fires. Sigh.
