Ben had woken up to those words far too many times not to be immediately on alert. The problem with being a Reaper and a Healer for Klaus was that he had a really, really, really bad habit of raising the dead. Even those marked for a final death, not the ghosts that had a half-living existence in their world and could retake their human forms on the Solstice and the Equinox.

“Klaus the Necromancer strikes again,” Diego said from his bed.

“Why is there a bleeding werewolf on the floor?” Allison asked from the doorway.

Ben just wanted to go back to sleep. He’d been having nice peaceful dreams of cotton candy clouds and rivers of caramel.

“That’s Dave,” Klaus said. “I found him and when I tried to like, guide his furry little soul on I must’ve flipped his light switch.” Klaus patted the bleeding wolf’s head. “I wonder what he looks like in his human form.”

“Please get him off my carpet,” Ben said.

“Why did you bring him home?” Allison asked.

“So Ben can give him that shock of life. Maybe he’ll heal better in his human form,” Klaus said.

“How do you know his name’s Dave?” Ben asked as he rolled out of his bed. He’d learn long ago to just give in to Klaus.

“He looks like a Dave,” Klaus said.

“He looks like a wolf,” Diego said.

Klaus shook his head. “No imagination in you, Diego.”

While Allison, Klaus, and Diego argued about just what kind of name the wolf looked like, Ben leaned over the being in question.

Intelligent blue eyes watched him, the pain and confusion clear. Klaus was lucky he hadn’t lost a limb.

“It’s okay,” Ben promised. “I’m just going to give you a bit of a shock. It’ll switch you to your human form and help us fix whatever’s wrong.”

The wolf’s eyes tracked Ben’s siblings.

“Yeah, let me just go ahead and apologize for them. I wish I could say this was a rare occurrence, but we get noise complaints on the regular.”

Ben called on the power inside him, picturing a defibrillator in his mind, and placed them over the wolf’s chest. There was a bright flash of light, the smell of burning fur, and then a naked man in place of a wolf.

also because i'm a historian and bi woman focusing on wwii ( with a nod to vietnam) i bought coming out under fire because of you and can't wait to read it. i'm hoping to take my research in the direction of queer history because lord knows there's not enough - especially when it comes to the military. anyways ~ thank you for dedicating so much time to writing for free because honestly you're extremely talented and should be making money off of it

I’ve talked with a few friends about how both fics, Through the Gay Days and Our War, just have a lot of myself in them, in terms of the importance of queer friendship and queer history, and I’m so happy that’s been resonating with other people too. yeah. idk. I approached both as total self-indulgence projects and I’m glad to hear how people react to them. thank you!!
