Art ramblings

When creating ilomilo’s visual style, I had the idea of trying to not take inspirations from other games, but instead from more traditional art, architecture and things that I felt I had not seen in other games. A goal I had set out was to make the look distinctly European, and also to make most of the assets look a bit off or asymmetrical. Perfect is boring! Inspirations come from everywhere but the most obvious are of course Hundertwasser, Klimt and Gaudi. When making a new visual setting, I start with color combinations, materials or a general feeling. I find pictures that suits the feeling I want to communicate, in both colors and shapes, and make a tiny little collage to quickly get the idea across:

Regarding the characters, it feels like I’ve been scribbling ilo and milo-like characters for ages. Some of these are pretty old, but I definitely think there’s something ilomiloish in all of them:

Kuma knew when to ask questions and when not. He was aware life of royals wasn’t that great and for her in particular it seemed to be rather a torture. He never asked questions, though. He hoped he didn’t say too much or angered her in any way by saying those words.

Upon hearing her request – more like order than a request - he kneeled down and lowered his palm so she could sit down on it. When she did, he secured her legs with his other palm, so she doesn't fall down when he uses his devil fruit ability.

He was used to the weird sensation when he was pushing objects through air, including the both of them, but she probably wasn’t that much.

The place they reappeared in within a few seconds turned out to be a beach. Sand under their feet rustled when he let go of her and put her down carefully, as if she was made of porcelain. ‘Wait a bit, little princess.’ Kuma disappeared again and reappeared shortly with two giant blankets he layed down on the sand and a giant umbrella to protect her from sun. He also fetched boxes of still hot margherita and several bottles of her favorite beer. He tossed it toward her slowly as if he wasn’t sure if she wanted it. If she wants to talk about stuff that bothers her, she will. If she needs more beer, he will fetch it when she finishes it so it stays cold. He tried to not think about the fact that he had basically kidnapped a princess, even if it was her wish.
