Part 1: A few weeks ago I got rejected from my first choice university and I feel like sh**. For the last two years Iāve been doing everything to get in there, Iāve lost friendships, holidays, and hadnāt had any relationships because I wanted to āfocus on my goalā. Now I feel like Iāve been left with nothing: no āsuccessā, no love, nothing. I wasnāt really that invested in that specific university, I just wanted to prove that Iām the best (awful but true).
Part 2: I got an offer from my second choice but I didnāt feel any joy, I just felt numb. I hate myself for letting me become that way. But most of all I hate me for the way Iāve been treating my parents. All theyāve done is love and support me and I always lash out at them for no reason. All they want is to see me happy, and I canāt give that to them. I have a therapist to whom Iāve said these things but I feel like thereās something inside me that doesnāt allow me to move onā¦Ā
Hi there,
Thanks for sending in your ask tomental health advice. I am so happy that you came to us for advice. I hope tohelp you as much as I can. Iām sorry that you got rejected from your first choiceuniversity. I was also rejected from my choice as well and it can really hurt tobe rejected. I know that you are trying your best and you are probably reallystressed. The stress is probably what is making you lash out for no reason. Ican give you some tips for how to deal with this.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Societyputs so much pressure on young people to succeed. The bar is set so high thatit causes unneeded stress on students. I know this myself because I am in collegeand it is very stressful juggling school and work. It is totally okay that yougot rejected. I know it hurts right now but in the end it is all about gettinga good education and enjoying your time meeting new people. I met so manyfriends at the college that I am in right now. I am actually happy I didnātattend the other college because it would have been a lot more expensive. Iwould look into this 2nd choice college. If you got an offer then Iam guessing that you are getting some of college paid for or something.
There are many factors to considerwhen choosing a college. Just because this college was your choice college, doesnāt mean that it was the best one for you. Ā You will probably be happier at a college thatisnāt so expensive and where you can succeed without trying to compete so muchwith other students. You are going to have competition everywhere, but somecolleges are worse than others.
I want to see you happy too! I knowthat your parents are just looking out for you. I would recommend continuing totalk to this therapist about these struggles. I would tell them exactly whatyou said about not being able to move on. You still have time to haverelationships and enjoy your time. You are still young.
I know that you can get through this! Did you know that wehave a live chat service that is available to anyone who needs it? To speakwith someone you can send in a request for someone to get online or see if anadmin has posted that they are currently online. If you feel like you are inimmediate danger, please call emergency services and/or go to the nearesthospital. I also recommend looking at our āI have an Emergencyāpage. Feel free to send in another ask if you feel that you have additionalquestions or need additional help.
