Hey, what exactly is ASD? All I ever hear about it are the symptoms, but what classifies it as ASD?
Hi there,
Thank you for sending in your ask to mental health advice. I am so happy that you came to us for advice. I hope to help you as much as I can. ASD is Autism Spectrum Disorder. ASD is often misunderstood, so I’d be happy to clear up what it really is.
People often refer to Autism as on a “spectrum”. It is explained like this because each person who has autism may experience it differently than another person with autism. It used to be separated by autism and the term “Asperger's syndrome” but now it is better understood that people can be on any part of the spectrum and they lumped it all into one disorder. Asperger’s is often used to refer to someone who has mild autism. Some people experience autism with extreme severity, which is also called low functioning. Someone like this may be non-verbal or have behavior issues. Someone who is high functioning may be able to live “normally” and without many symptoms or their symptoms are easily controlled. It all depends on the person and the unique way they experience this disorder.
People with autism have the potential to live normal lives without their disorder causing them problems. Some people need more assistance than others. This is a unique disorder that affects social interaction and patterns of behavior. It is seemed to be caused by genetics. There is still a lot to be learned about Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Did you know that we have a live chat service that is available to anyone who needs it? To speak with someone, you can send in a request for one of the live chat admins to talk with. You can also check and see if an admin has already posted that they are currently online. If you feel like you are in immediate danger, please call emergency services and/or go to the nearest hospital. I also recommend looking at our “I have an Emergency” page. Feel free to send in another ask if you feel that you have any more questions or need additional help.
