Getting Clued In
@bibuckanniversarybingo
Prompts - Flags and Looking Back, there were clues.
Alex loves that Buck is so excited to learn about the different flags and realizing there might've been some clues as to his bisexuality.
AO3
***
Alex can’t help grinning at the excitement of Buck as he goes through all of the same steps of research Alex went through when Henry turned his world upside down with his own bisexual realization. Buck had realized much more recently – due to a kiss, by Alex, and he’s so happy to help him explore and realize things.
Things such as the vast community and difficult sexualities. The history of everything.
Buck loved research as much as Alex did, and he has an amazing curiosity that just pulls Alex in. Especially when he gets going. His blue eyes sparkling, his hands going. He can’t help smiling and he can’t help falling in love.
“Did you know that each sexuality has its own flag?” Buck asks, while they sit outside on his terrace. “I didn’t realize that there were so many possibilities, but not only are there possibilities, but each possibility has a flag.”
Alex nods. “I wasn’t as surprised, but yeah, that’s why I have two pins – one with the overall flag and one for being bisexual. If you want, we could get all of them though. Put them on the wall or something.”
“That might actually be fun. I can’t believe that there were so many things that I didn’t realize. It’s not that I didn’t know, but I never looked into it.”
“You’re going to have fun at Pride this year, no?”
“Oh absolutely,” Buck states. “Hen insisted that now that I’m official – which sparked a whole different conversation – that I have to go this year and she gets to dress me up. Not sure if I should be worried about that or not.”
Hen was his co-worker, a good friend that was absolutely delighted when Buck told her about their kiss. She’s the first to know because Buck had gone to her a bit confused (and a lot like Alex going to Nora because she’s bi when he was confused). Although Hen is a lesbian, she could talk him through a few things and of course, when they up for their first date, Alex could talk him through a few things, too.
“I’m sure it’ll be fine,” Alex assures him. “But what’s this about official?”
Buck nearly chokes on his drink and flushes. “Apparently, she thought I was bi but not open about it – something, something, catching me check out men’s asses … and like, she straight up laughed when I said it was perfectly normal to check out men’s asses. You can admire another’s man’s physique and not be –”
“Bi?” Alex offers, trying and failing to contain his own laughter. “Man, we are so much alike.”
Buck looks playfully offended. “It’s normal!”
“It’s not, actually. Believe me.” He’s still chuckling, and Buck’s smiling, slightly, too. “But if it helps, I may or may not have felt the same way. I’m sitting here feeling like I’m looking myself in the mirror.”
Buck shakes his head, but the smile is bigger. “Hen told me that she’s never seen Chim or Bobby do the same and most men that she’s seen or known to do it are gay or bi and that she was just waiting for that ‘finally’ moment with me.”
“I think she’s probably right. She’s a smart woman.”
“Yeah, she is,” Buck states. “Still, it did make me think of rating men’s asses with my ex-girlfriend and the laughter in her eyes when I always said I was straight. I can’t help wondering if there were any other clues.”
Alex hums. “I definitely had a similar experience. Once I realized, I kept thinking of all these things where I assumed that it was perfectly straight, only to then realize that straight people probably don’t have to convince themselves that they’re straight.”
Buck laughs. “Yeah, that’s probably true. Still, it kind of makes me wonder…”
Alex runs a hand through Buck’s hair affectionately as he moves to sit in his lap. “Still, whatever clues there were, all that matters is that you eventually found yourself and I’m happy to be a part of that journey.”
“I’m happy that you’re a part of it, too,” Buck says, smiling at him. “I’m happy that it’s you that I met, that kissed me and turned my world on its axis.”
Alex leans down to give him a kiss before saying, “Sometimes, all we need is some magical kiss to slot the world into place – like a puzzle with a missing piece. Finally, it all makes sense.”
“Yes, exactly. It all makes sense.”
Buck leans up for another kiss and Alex knows that they could get lost kisses for the rest of the night and if he’s honest, that’s all he really needs now and forever.
An Easy Out
@bibuckanniversarybingo
Prompts - Family Dinner and Coming Out
Buck's been dating Alex for a few months and finally decides to come out to his family.
AO3
***
“So, Bobby, I was wondering if you and Athena might want to come by my place on Friday for dinner,” Buck asks, pretending that it’s just a normal ask, even though it isn’t.
He hasn’t told Bobby and Maddie(/Chim) about Alex – well, not true, he’s talked about his boyfriend plenty, but he never specified the boyfriend part, just Alex and everyone so far has assumed that Alex is a woman (Buck hasn’t corrected them because he’s been trying to figure out the right time to tell everyone). Buck and Alex met after the chaos of Eddie leaving and Buck moving into Eddie’s old house.
The whole thing with Eddie leaving had sparked a conversation with Maddie where she might’ve suggested an interest in Eddie (which he doesn’t have) but did make him question why his sister would think that he’d be interested in men, and he did a lot of self-reflection.
A Good Night
@bibuckanniversarybingo
Prompt - literally sleeping together
Buck has a good night with his boyfriend.
AO3
***
One of the things that Buck appreciates out about his new boyfriend, Alex, it’s that he loves Buck’s natural affections. He loves the way that Buck throws an arm around his shoulders. He loves the way that Buck ruffles his hair whenever he passes him while he’s at the desk or on the couch or in the kitchen. He loves the way Buck loves to hug him and hold his hand.
He just … he’s so fucking perfect sometimes.
Buck’s never too much for him, and he seems to always genuinely love him for him, not just for mind-blowing sex, but also just for companionship.
He comes over, even on the days that Buck tells him that he won’t be getting lucky (not in those words exactly but just all of the texts about him wanting to see him after a rough shift but being exhausted) – Alex always assures him that he just wants to see him that he doesn’t need anything else than his smiling face.
And he means that.
Buck can tell with the way that he revels in the cuddling during their movie night, not vying for more just enjoying the closeness. It’s the way that he lets Buck lead every soft kiss, never putting more passion to invoke something like he would on other days (when Buck hasn’t talked about being exhausted in their texts and instead sends him messages about how he really just wants to have his way with him as soon as he gets home). It’s the way that he doesn’t make suggestive comments or flirting in a way that usually sparks something in Buck’s belly and leads to a memorable night in Buck’s bed.
He truly loves him that he gets him so when they go to bed that night and he opens his arms to invite Alex in to cuddle him, he says, “I love you,” for the first time.
Alex looks up at him, blinking those big brown eyes at him like he isn’t sure he heard right.
So, Buck repeats himself.
“I love you, Alex.”
Alex grins. Eyes sparkling. “I love you, too, Buck.”
Buck gives him a sweet kiss, and says, “Good. ‘Night, honey.”
“Night, babe.”
And it certainly is a good night.
Calendar of My Heart
@bibuckanniversarybingo
Prompts - Firefighter Calendar & Fire Engine
The 118 is asked to do the firefighter calendar again, but while Buck decides not to summit a photo, someone else does it for him.
AO3
***
Buck never expected the Firefighter Calendar to come up again after Chimney won a few years back. He knows that they still do it, but it’s not always the same stations that get to submit pictures, but this year, the 118 was asked again.
His team had teased him about going for it again, so naturally, he had decided that he didn’t want it – not this time. He’s happy Chim got it last time, but he doesn’t really need the validation like he did back then, and well, he’s gotten enough attention as a firefighter in recent years.
So, he puts it out of his mind.
That is until he buys one of the calendars to use for the year because it’s for a good cause and the pictures are more fun to look at now that he’s realized that he’s bi. He doesn’t know who was picked, but that wasn’t important anymore. At least now, it feels less weird to admire the pictures.
But when he got home, calendar in hand, he was distracted by a call from his sister and so he tosses it on the counter and walks outside on the terrace with Blaze his beagle following behind him.
***
Alex arrives at Buck’s loft only a few minutes after Buck. He waves to him on the terrace and then moves to start dinner. Since they started dating, Buck had pretty much opened his home to Alex and invited him to make himself at home, so he does.
He loves the domesticity of it and hopes one day that this place really will be his home.
Until then though, he still manages to feel that way.
Which is why after getting the food started, he sees the firefighter calendar and doesn’t hesitate to open it up. Flipping through he admires the men up against the fire engines in various states of firefighter gear of stations 122, 133, and 136 until he gets to Mr. April – 118.
He wasn’t expecting to see his boyfriend leaning down in front of the 118 Fire Engine, he’s a bit of a mess, still in his gear – the coat open, his shirt stuck to him through sweat, his hair has soot, but smiling looking a bit relieved. It was clearly taken after the dog shelter rescue as he’s petting/holding Blaze. He looks so happy and like the ultimate firefighter.
“Wow, Buck,” he says, softly, not realizing that Buck’s re-entered the loft, no longer on the phone.
“Wow, what?”
He looks up and offers him the calendar. “You didn’t tell me that you put your name in for the calendar this year.”
“I didn’t,” Buck offers, then he looks down at Mr. April, it’s him with his name – Evan ‘Buck’ Buckley, Station 118 – written in the bottom right corner. “Wow, I didn’t – I wasn’t even considering putting my name forward, how’d this happened?”
“I don’t know, but it’s a good picture,” Alex tells him. “The reassuring face of the rescuer of dogs. Particularly, our dog.”
He crouches down to pet Blaze, who had stayed with Buck outside when Alex entered. He’s very much Buck’s dog, but Alex is quite okay with that. The beagle would naturally cling to Buck when he saved him.
He glances up at Buck staring at the calendar, confused.
“You’re not upset about it, are you?”
“No, no, not … upset. Just surprised that’s all. It’s a great picture, though, clearly.”
Alex hums. “It’s my favorite picture, we should find out where we can get it printed – put it up on the wall.”
“I’d like that.”
***
It’s a few days later, the calendar still on the counter where they left it when they started to focus on other things, that Buck enters the loft and as he greets Blaze tells Alex, “I’ve figured it out.”
“Oh?” Alex prompts, curious. He knows it’s been bugging Buck a bit not knowing.
Buck hums. “Apparently my ex – the one that wrote a book that involved her dating me and getting close the firehouse – was there, doing her reporting and got the cameraman to take a picture. She had intended to write an article about the rescue and use the photo for that, but she heard about the calendar and decided to submit it there. She said that it was a peace offering.”
“A peace offering?” Alex questions, although he’s glad that someone had thought to submit it, it really is a good picture.
Buck nods. “Something, something, she kind of misses being my friend and she thought maybe this would be a way back. I think she’s changed like I have in the last couple of years, and she knew that the calendar meant a lot to me the first time the 118 was asked, and figured… why not try?”
Alex smiles. “Well, I will support you – whatever your choice be – you know I’m not the jealous type.”
“Nothing to be jealous of anyway, hon,” Buck assures him. “But I think I like it – I like the idea of having people outside of the 118 sometimes, it’s nice to have people that are mine, you know?”
Given that for a while he shared a best friend with his sister, he gets it.
“Yeah, I know.” He offers him a kiss before saying, “So, did she send you the picture so we could put it up on the wall?”
“She did one better,” Buck says, pulling something out of his bag. “She framed it.”
He offers it to Alex, who grins. “Quite the peace offering.”
“Definitely.”
And then, Alex moves to where he’d like to put and asks, “Here?”
“Perfect spot.”
“Good.”
Fruity Visits
@bibuckanniversarybingo
Prompts - Uniform & At the Station
Alex has been wanting to visit Buck while he's at work for a long time.
AO3
***
Ever since Alex moved out to LA and met Buck a month after his mom’s presidency ended and his dad’s started, he’s always wanted to visit the firehouse (and Buck at work), but in the almost three months they’ve together, things never seemed to line up for a good visit.
At first, because he didn’t want to be … a clingy boyfriend – showing up at his work just see to him because he misses him. Later, after Buck told him that he absolutely would want Alex to show up as a surprise or not, Alex hadn’t been able to find the time.
But he’s back from an event for his dad and he’s been missing Buck for the last few days, so he decided to surprise him.
He walks into the firehouse surprisingly easy with his gift of an edible arrangement. Cash, his secret service agent, following behind him.
It’s surprisingly quiet, but then again, it’s somewhat late and some might be in the bunk room... although the engine is missing… Maybe he should’ve come earlier.
He wanders in unsure of where to go, but somehow, he gets to the base of the stairs and figures going up to the loft makes the most sense. He’s surprised and unsurprised when he spies Buck alone in the loft, reading a book on queer literature. Buck’s still a bit new to his own bisexual realization and after a kiss that led nowhere, his desire to discover himself led to a research binge and meeting Alex at a pride event not long after.
It was like an instant connection. Something a little easier than he ever expected, and although Buck’s still on his journey of self-discovery, Alex is more than happy to be along for the ride.
As he gets to the top step, Buck spots him and moves so that instead of laying with his legs spread (one on the back of the couch, the other reaching to the floor), he’s now sitting up and looking like he’s ready to pounce Alex.
Alex, for his part, admires his boyfriend. The uniform is something that he doesn’t see often on Buck, mainly because he changes out of it at the station before he comes home.
It’s … well… Alex has always had a thing for uniforms, but he doesn’t get much time to admire him before he’s swept up in a hug and a kiss.
When they break apart, Alex offers him the edible arrangement. “I come bearing fruit.”
Buck laughs and teases. “It more than one way.”
Alex laughs because he’s teasing about being fruity and he loves it. “Cute.”
“Aren’t I always?” Buck teases.
“Always.”
Buck gives him another kiss, and then, taking him by hand, he leads him over to the kitchen. “You’re just about in time for dinner.”
“Dinner? This late?”
“We’ve had a bit of a crazy day – I’m the man behind for the most recent call because I needed a shower after the last one and because then I could make dinner for when they get back to the station.”
Alex smiles as he sits at the island, placing the edible arrangement on it, as Buck lets go and moves to the oven. “So, I picked the right time to visit then?”
“It’s always a right time for you to visit, but yes, I think this is a good time,” Buck says before bending over to open it and check on whatever’s inside.
Alex appreciates the way Buck’s ass looks in his uniform and it’s only the fact that Buck’s at work that keeps him from going over there and smacking it.
“So, what are you making?”
Buck hums, “Bobby’s famous lasagna – it took a few tries, but I’ve got it down now.”
“You certainly do,” a new voice says. “Who’s this?”
Alex turns to see the man that looks surprisingly like Buck despite not being related, and clearly his captain, Bobby.
“This my boyfriend, Alex,” Buck offers with a smile.
Bobby grins and offers his hand. “Thought so, I’m Bobby Nash, it’s so nice to meet you.”
“Same,” Alex retorts, gesturing at his gift. “I also come bearing fruit.”
“You brought fruit, oh, he can stay,” a woman says, coming up behind them.
“Maybe we can trade him for Buck,” another man teases.
Buck sticks his tongue out at him and says, “Maybe we should trade him for you, Chim, I’d certainly have more fun.”
“As long as that fun isn’t in the firetruck,” Chim jokes.
Buck rolls his eyes as he introduces the woman as Hen and Chim as ‘Chimney’ and his brother-in-law. “And I would like to remind you that I did that once.”
“That we know of,” Hen offers to laughter.
Alex chuckles at the teasing. He knows some of the stories about Buck when he first started at the firehouse, and personally thought they were funny. He likes the chaos of it.
He also likes knowing how far Buck’s come, and he’s had fun telling his own stories about some of the chaos he, himself, got involved in over the years.
“I promise it’s been years and it only happened once,” Buck offers, then looks at Alex and winks.
“Buck!” Bobby admonishes.
“I’m kidding! You guys had the truck, obviously we haven’t done anything in it,” Buck says, winking again and causing them all to burst into laughter and Bobby gives him a playfully annoyed look.
Bobby hums. “So, how’s dinner looking?”
“Five minutes and I hope that you’re okay with Alex joining us.”
“Of course, we’re happy to get to know your boyfriend,” Bobby assures him.
“And embarrassing you in front of your new boyfriend is a rite of passage,” Chim offers.
Buck rolls his eyes. “Good luck with that, not easily embarrassed.”
“Sure, you’re not.”
Alex smiles. “Well, I’d love to learn anything about Buck, and I’d love to get to know you all, too.”
Hen smiles. “And we’d love to get to know you, too.”
“Good, then, let’s eat,” Buck says offering the lasagna out of the oven.
“Yes, let's.”
***
Later, when Buck returns to his loft to find Alex waiting for him, he’s excited. He’s happy, and he’s madly in love.
“Baby, you’re home!” Alex says, grinning the second that Buck comes through the door still in his uniform because he saw the way Alex admired him.
“Hi, honey,” Buck says, pulling him in for a hug and a deep kiss. “They loved you and I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
His eyes scan over Buck’s uniform. “And I’m guessing I wasn’t as subtle at the station in checking you out.”
Buck grins. “Definitely not, but that just means that I get to enjoy that look and hopefully, what you were probably thinking about at the station.” He pulls Alex close to him, again. “Right?”
Alex laughs. “I like the sound of that.”
“Good.”
