Yesterday I posted a bunch of Spider-Man #1s, and looked through the McFarlane launch issue for the first time since the ‘90s. This wasn’t my original copy — I had the yellow background version that came polybagged, bought on a trip to Toronto in summer of 1990. The layouts are amazing, but good god, the art…
Leafing through it brought back a lot of memories: my parents were building a new house, my dad’s contractor uncle was in town to help him (he was cool cause he taught me québécois cuss words en tabarnac and had a TV in his truck). We had temporarily moved into a semi-detached house on the same street where a bunch of friends lived, but once moved into the new one, the rest of the summer was filled with a creeping anxiety that due to the outskirts location of the new house, I had to change schools. Had never been the new kid before. The first few months of the school year were dreadful but things levelled out.
But the good parts of that summer: hitting corner stores in hopes of finding an X-Men issue. Collecting baseball cards. Having a little mini TV in my bedroom and one of those see-through phones. The Dick Tracy movie. Watching The Little Mermaid ad nauseum with my little brother and cousin, playing Metal Gear and The Adventures of Link for a whole week when another cousin loaned us his NES while they were on vacation. Seeing The Jetsons movie with William and Guy. Spending birthday money on Kenner’s Dark Knight Collection action figures. Learning BASIC at a computer camp. Signing up for cub scouts. Seeing Count Yorga, Vampire on late-nite TV. Finishing Police Quest on my XT.
A few Marvel firsts.

Tornado No 1: Free Turbo-Flyer! Plus The U.K.’s First Real Live Super Hero!
So far everything in this blog has been a re-read. All those times I’ve guessed how a Future-Shock ends, I’ve read that story before. It may have been thirty years ago, but there’s a possibility that I’m remembering rather than working out the ending. This is different. I bought a full run of the 22 issues of Tornado for this blog and have not yet read them. Everything I know about Tornado I know…
