‘Red hair, green eyes and a veritable constellation of freckles. That’s what I want. But if a dull-looking boy with muddy eyes near-falls into my lap I won’t mind. I’m well and truly desperate, I think, Edward. Though for some grandly romantic affair or a midnight snack, I can’t tell. Scary, isn’t it?’

After a worker had fallen while working, getting a cut on the stone cutter, Val had been in a strange mood. His wounds weren’t bad, but he had bled all over the castle, trying to find her for help, as they didn’t have a first aid kit. They all were sent home early, the injured with extra payment. The castle had been cleaned, but the smell lingered in her nose for the whole day.
Now night, Valerie had eaten more than usual, and hungered for something else. She knew what she wanted, but she knew she didn’t need it, not even animal’s, but the craving was still there. Currently, she was face first into the couch, trying to ignore it. Her ears picked up on heart beats of animals near by, the rats in the castle scurrying about, the deer and wolves running in the woods, bats fluttering in the unfinished rooms. It was driving her insane, and she missed when someone had come into the castle without setting off the alarm. I’m losing my mind, she thought, letting out a huff of annoyance.
The sign she’d zoomed past on her broom had read ‘Forks’, though she’d hardly had a chance to contemplate the name. It was raining-she couldn’t help thinking that it had been raining ever since she’d run away.
Watch out for that tree-too late. Her flying broom crunched into a nearby tree and she went flying, but thankfully she was still in one piece-mostly. “Now that hurt like hell,” she murmured to herself.
