katherine pierce is a lawyer, yes, but despite being a lawyer, she hardly had anything to do with criminal law. thank goddess because she didn't even want to have something to do with criminals and katherine really hoped that stayed the way. today, however, she found herself in court because of a criminal, a fraud. fortunately, she has been invited as a witness and not as that person's lawyer (poor people who actually had to defend a person like him). the job could have been done by another colleague as well but her superiors had decided she should be the one who is going to make the statements.
the prospect of wasting her precious time because of a scammer (and the knowledge someone else could have done the job as well) didn't amuse her. nonetheless, she wore a professional smile on her lips the entire time, her statement perfectly prepared, and her appearance flawless - she didn't expect anything less from herself. who knows? perhaps her superiors had a good reason why she should be the one to represent her law firm's interests.
when it was finally katherine's turn, after waiting for half an hour, she quickly and completely made the statement and let out a sigh of relief when she was allowed to leave after twenty minutes. at least the afternoon wasn't completely wasted. nonetheless, she didn't leave the court immediately because she had seen a vending machine and she was thirsty so she bought a cup of coffee. not really her taste but what could be expected from a vending machine? she's going to help herself to a good cup of coffee once she's back in her office.
katherine took a sip and slowly walked towards the exit, her heels echoing through the large and almost empty entrance hall. but that wasn't the only sound. she heard someone approaching and turned around, only to see one of the detectives.
"i'm sorry, i only bought a cup of coffee and now i'm already on my way out," she explained, thinking she might get into trouble because she took too long to leave the building.
