OKAY SO !!! It’s based a little off an au I’m writing where things are slightly removed from canon (bc the writers and fox are my enemies!!!)
We all know Oswald can sing, right? I think that paired with Fish’s pretty obvious misogyny towards other women would have left Oswald with only one real option when it came to joining her ranks — ✨ a show girl ✨
Singing on stage like a caged bird and being grabbed at by men while serving drinks would fill him with such a bubbling, violent rage that would only compound when he finally gets Fish’s attention. She’d make his life miserable; talking down to him, putting him in degrading positions for his audacity of wanting to be more. He would become her little project; her punching bag. She’d try and craft him into something she could use and throw away as opposed to seeing him for his true, lengthy potential. It would be a much tougher fight for him to reach where he wants to be but I think it also gives him some advantages! (Sneaking out dressed as a man and no one ever noticing so it’s a perfect disguise 😭🙏)
Instead of Falcone finding him and slipping into Maroni’s hands, in this version I think he would take on more on an Eliza role. Falcone finds him interesting and Fish, always seeking an opportunity, practically gives Oswald to him. Os, sensing his own moment, comes clean to Falcone as soon as they are alone; detailing every little moment and word Fish has said about Falcone including her orders to help undermine him. Falcone, who we KNOW is a gentleman, would instantly strike up a bargain of Oswald pretending to be his lover and they’d both play their parts while Oswald continues to spy on Fish instead with Falcone’s protection. (Untouchable Sugar baby Oswald my beloved…….)
It would lead on to a lot of canon events of Fish targeting Falcone’s money but this time failing big time because Os had snitched on their plans. Fish being strung up for apology, butch helping her escape etc. But I still think it puts him a better position once taking over her club. Falcone would ask what he could do to repay him for all his hard work and Oswald would ask not only for more respect and a better position but come clean about being trans and wanting to start presenting the way he wants!
By the time the club is reopened, it’s as if Oswald Cobblepot just magically appeared in Fish’s spot, having always been a man in the eyes of the family 💕
