Me: Joss Whedon is gross and counter-progressive, and Buffy is just another example of his wet dreams, but I really wish people didn't ignore the fact that Sarah Michelle Gellar put so much love into that role that Buffy is a genuine role model and inspiring character. The fact that the "creator" of the character is trashy doesn't mean we should throw out the few things that they've done really well. Anyway, it's a complicated issue, but Buffy helped me to find value in not only the women around me, but also in myself as a young gay man, and I don't want other people to be robbed of that growth just because we feel the need to blacklist every potentially problematic piece of media.

Me, again: Also I'm just really glad that we don't feel the need to hide our thoughts from each other just because we have differing interests.

If the feminist movement post-weinstein makes you wonder if you are even allowed to hug women anymore, the answer is no. Most guys can. Most of the time, a hug is just a hug, and it's shared between friends; but you, the one getting upset because hugging is linked in your mind with sexual favours, are not allowed. Please take this personally.

I did not expect to actually care much or be emotionally moved by Love, Simon. It's just not the genre of movie I tend to really enjoy; I never connected with teen dramas or romcoms. I went because I wanted to support it as a gay movie to show the industry that these movies are "worth making" financially, so it suprised me how much it meant to me. I had not realised how much of a difference it makes to see characters going through feelings and experiences I had actually gone through. I had not realised the difference that representation makes. I had never seen a story on the big screen that validated my existance like this. I'm 22 years old, and I went through the formative years of drama and angst and relationships and secrets, and NEVER had a story told to me that said, "what YOU are feeling is real, and normal. YOU'RE worries and concerns and secrets are natural, and it will be ok." Representation matters. Representation changes the story. Maybe, though I seriously doubt it, current high-schoolers don't need this movie. I did. The straight man who sat behind me, who clearly was uncomfortable, but also trying to better himself by leaving his comfort zone, Needs This Movie. Your mom, who wants to accept you, but grew up being brainwashed into believing that "the gays" are inherently dangerous, and in danger of drugs and disease, Needs This Movie. Your little sister, who doesn't understand why you waited so long to come out to her, and it confuses and hurts her that you didn't trust her with this precious information, Needs This Movie.

Representation Matters.
