60 fishermen killed a year during deep sea fishing
CHITTAGONG, Jan 24: More than 60 fishermen are killed and over 200 others injured by the pirate groups a year while fishing in the deep sea area.
The Marine Fishing Boat Owners Association said this at a press conference at Chittagong Press Club today.
"We are being attacked by pirates in Sonadia, Kutubdia and Moheshkhali areas," the boat owners said.
The association leaders said the fishermen have suspended fishing in the deep sea area for the last two months in fear of further attack by the pirates. At least one million people have so long been held hostage to five to six pirate groups in the Bay of Bengal.
"In the last one month alone more than 50 fishing trawlers have been attacked by these groups as every group attacks in their own strategic way, the leaders said at the press conference.
The police stations in the Cox's Bazar and other coastal areas do not register cases in these incidents on the plea that these crimes are being occurred in maritime area. "After repeated complaints three police stations of Cox's Bazar have registered eight cases recently," they said.
"Recently we have had meetings with the Coast Guard and Bangladesh Navy officials, who are conducting raids to nab the pirates but in most cases the pirates change strategy for which the raids turn futile. A number of pirates have also been nabbed recently," they said.
The Association leaders warned that they would resort to stringent protest programme if security to the deep sea fishing trawlers' crews is not ensured.
The fishermen said there are 40,000 boats engaged in deep sea fishing although only 10,000 boats are registered. Each fishing boat goes for marine fishing with 22-25 fishermen on board. Most of them hail from Ramgati, Noakhali and Cox's Bazar, they said.
They named Jambu Bahini of Sonadia, Sarwar Bahini of Moheshkhali, Rabi Bahini of Banskhali and Ramij Bahini of Sandwip who are predominantly engaged in piracy.
Acting president of the association Noor Hussain and secretary general Aminul Huq among others spoke at the press conference.
