i think my favorite angsty au is the canon-divergent one where eddie is in love with barry but they aren’t dating. eddie feels like barry couldn’t love him--not the way eddie loves barry--so he starts to throw himself into being someone that barry would want to be with. someone that mirrors barry. someone who’s got the same abilities and can keep up. someone like...the reverse flash. and eddie starts this business so that he can get closer to barry. to the flash. only it goes haywire, because barry is in love with iris, and eddie feels like he’s wasting all these feelings, so he goes darkside. and he becomes STRONGER than barry: he could easily overpower him. and one day, he does. eddie has him by the throat, and he’s squeezing, and barry is desperately gasping his name, “eddie please, eddie don’t do this, this isn’t you--” but eddie just cuts him off with a laugh and says “but this is the only me that you’ll recognize”. and barry just blurts it out--“i care about you eddie. i can’t let this happen to you.” and eddie falters. did he just...? BUT THEN cisco or caitlin shoots eddie in the back while he’s distracted, and eddie dies in barry’s arms....but not before saying “i love you, barry. i’ve always loved you.”
