eyes roll, quite theatrically so. she is fully aware of whom he’ll suggest now, has spent the better part of the evening listening to his rants and grumblings about the justice league, about one member in peculiar. ‘ uhm—- ’ lips purse, eyes narrow as she regards him from the side ( they’re seated at a bar ). ‘ what part of I am a child psychologist didn’t you understand? ’

                 HER HANDS ARE TOO FOCUSED on fanning the dress just so to answer right away, even if his voice echoes in the hallway of her apartment from the guest bedroom. The chiffon will never lay like she’d hope, though Arthur’s so quick to sweep her off her feet in front of the cameras that she can’t foolishly believe she has a chance here. For MONTHS he’s been an emotional support guide, the friend who hasn’t judged her for what she is (she’s not a who anymore, not really) and now? Just check out the goddamn newspaper stands littering every street corner in Gotham. Arthur Curry and Echo Galaeus are damn near synonymous.

                                                    ( so when does it all end? )

“Well I’m not much of a snitch, so it really depends on you.” It’s a call from her bedroom until she saunters out in the cerulean blue get-up with the plunging neckline and ruffled shoulders ---- a color she’s worn all too often anymore, to push the advocacy for ending ocean pollution. Trying to situate her earrings in the right positions, she takes a few steps towards him with a small smile. “-----you say the word and it’s done. Not gonna ask you for anythin’ when you’ve done more me than a favor. I owe you.”  She skips out on using we, on remotely accessing the piece of herself that feels better with them as a team.

                          How long can they keep this going? It’ll stay until he goes.

he’d taken her out on the bike again, the night air warm against her skin despite the cold bite of the airstream. she loved it, loved the freedom that came with it. it feels like flying, she supposes, feels like jumping out of a plane without a parachute above the desert, perhaps even better than that. ‘ where are you taking me? ’ arms are wrapped around his form, holding on tight, her front pressed to his back, her head resting against his shoulder, her lips somewhere by his ear to make sure he hears her ( enhanced hearing or not ). 

their relationship had changed, since he last took her out on the bike she later figured out, wasn’t his to begin with, the day at the fair had been a beautiful one, had ended in a sugar-rush and fireworks and the sensation of his lips on hers. ‘ another fair? ’ a grin tugs on her lips, that are pressed against his neck, hidden in his hair ‘ another adventure? ’ teeth sink into her bottom lip to mask the grin he can’t see anyways. he’d done a good job showing her the surface world, but mera still needed to learn a lot. ‘ tell me. ’ her hold on him tightens briefly, she squishes him for empathy, urging him to tell her. she’s curious and not exactly a patient person.

Something is wrong… 

Something is so, UNBELIEVABLY wrong. This isn’t Peter, this isn’t him at all. He’s acting different despite not even speaking, there’s even subtle differences in his appearance. Usually, he’ll be constantly moving– even if he’s just standing in place, he’ll be fiddling with his hands or his shirt, leaning back on his heels, or messing around on his phone. But now he just…stands there, completely still, a glazed over look in his eyes. Brown, they were always brown, but subtle golden flicks weave their way into the tawny hues, and all life is GONE from his gaze. The animated and excitable glow the kid carries with him, evaporated by…whatever this is. 

                                  By whatever’s gained control. 

He stays like that, simply STARING ahead, unmoving, as if he’s simply zoning out. But when he hears a voice nearby, his head abruptly TURNS to the side. There are few seconds of silence, an awkward beat that hangs in the air, before an answer comes. “I’m fine.” It sounds unnatural, no stumbling over his own words or series of exclamation points out of either excitement or anxiety. Whatever this is, IT ISN’T PETER.
