          𝐍𝐀𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐓𝐄 𝐈𝐒 𝐀 𝐋𝐔𝐗𝐔𝐑𝐘 𝐎𝐍𝐋𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐑𝐈𝐕𝐈𝐋𝐄𝐆𝐄𝐃 𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐌𝐈𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐌𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐕𝐄𝐒;   not once was there the naïve belief that she could have perhaps found her soulmate in Y’Mera Xebella Challa ――   but to see her amidst the produce aisle,   to realise the PROXIMITY to Ephraim’s home…   she had repressed it,   that godforsaken pain and anger.   All that miserable pleading and that disgusting begging for Mera to come home,   the sensation of lungs being set AFLAME when she washed ashore,   coughing out saltwater and all remnants of hope.   How she lay there,   hands pressed to heaving chest and eyes blinded by the sun.   It suddenly made no sense anymore,   neither any shape of human interaction nor the mere presence of a HEART;   and then to see her,   that godforsaken coward,   shopping for produce and regarding her as though she genuinely regretted.   Momentarily,   she tried to make herself feel better by indulging in the belief that perhaps the heartbreaker had gotten her heart broken ALSO,   that she’d been cast out,   abandoned,   any hope for a happy ending torn out of her ribs ――

But the more she tried to hate Mera,   the more she realised she loved her still.   Everything else was meaningless  , everything else caused mere nonchalance.   And somehow she KNEW when the knock echoed through her floor.   

There’s silence when Mera speaks up,   eyes unable to meet hers and instead fixating on the child.   Part of her doesn’t want to know. It would take just a little PULL,   hand still on the doorknob and ready to shut her out once and for all ――   but she lingers for whatever reason.   Maybe because she’s a coward herself or maybe because she knows,   she’s not coward ENOUGH.

          Finally,   she meets her eyes.     “ Why did you come back? ”     She doesn’t let her in,   not yet.   Cannot bring her hands ot move or a stiffened figure to relax enough so it WITHDRAWS to the side.   This used to be Mera’s home,   used to be their home ――   their kitchen,   their bed,   their family.   And now Mera stands on her door with a child that is undeniably Orm’s.     “ Why would you even bother? ”     Another moment of silence,   breathless,   excruciating.     “ At least Kua loved me enough to let me go.   You couldn’t even do me the favour of ending our engagement before you married Orm. ”

She wills herself to belief that Moa not slamming the door in her face immediately was a good sign. It has to be a good sign had to be—- why did you even bother? She reels back, could as well have been slapped. “ Because I—- ” the former queen of atlantis tries, but her voice shakes, cracks until words fail her, until Moa’s voice, no, no, not her voice, the words that roll of her tongue, cut deep, deeper than any blade could ever have. This time around she staggers backward, stumbling a little. Her vision blurrs. “ Moa I—- ” she struggles, pulling Saga closer, holding her tighter. At least Kua loved me enough to let me go. The words ring through her mind. “ Do you really think I left you willingly? ” this time around her voice doesn’t shake, she sounds stronger than she feels. “ Do you really, truly believe that? ” a pause, heavy and painful. “ And I thought you knew me. ”

Mera never would have left, would it had been her choice. They had to drag her back, had to threaten everything, everyone she had come to love, to hold dear for her to not make a run for it again, the first chance she got.

The ring she still has, had worn it around a necklace, tugged beneath her clothes, always close to her heart, to where she still held on to Moa—- Saga wore that necklace now. The little ones most prized, most treasured possession. She had been so scared, when they had first made their way to the surface. This world so loud, so different—- Mera had told her that the necklace, that the ring held magic powers, told her that so long she wore it, she would always be save. Something Saga very much held on to, quite literally. Chubby little fingers tightly clutching around the ring, whenever she was scared. “ I fled, ” Mera finally continues “ They believe me, us, to be dead. I had to make sure they couldn’t find me, that she would be safe. ” a protective hand soothes over the little one’s back. “ I owe you an apology, an explanation too—- I will leave after that. You’ll never have to see me again, if you don’t want to, but at least, ” she swallows “ Allow me to do that and prove to you, that I love you, ” present tense, because she still does, with every fibre of her heart and soul “ To properly let you go. ”

She contemplates knocking, like she had contemplated coming here since—- since nearly a week. Eph had warned her that this would happen, that Moa would run into her sooner or later, that she couldn’t hide forever, especially not at his place. In the end the produce store near his home, had been her undoing. Mera had been able to feel her presence, before she had been able to make her out. There is a part of her that wishes that she hadn’t turned around, that she hadn’t seen the pain, the disappointment—- that she hadn’t seen what she had done, what she had caused with her disappearance, with how cold and distant she had been after Moa had tracked her down. 

If only she had left with her, but they would have tracked them down, there would have been no escape. 

Mera raises her hand for a third time, to knock, only to lower it again—- from the way Moa had looked at her, had turned away and left before she could as much as breathe her name she knew she was unwelcome. She at least needed to try and apologize, to try and explain. If Moa never wanted to see her again after that then she—- it’s a thought, a possibility that the former queen of atlantis doesn’t want to entertain. Sighing heavily, she raises her hand for a fourth time, careful not to wake Saga — Eph had offered to watch her but no, Mera needed to tell Moa everything and that included the sleeping toddler on her arms. This time around she knocks, praying, hoping that the woman she once had dreamed of marrying would open the door and not slam it in her face right away. 

“Hi,” she breathes quietly, not trusting her voice when the door does open “I—- can we please talk? I owe you an explanation and—- and an apology.”
