Interesting story recently about ‘vegan influencer’ Yovana Ayres who was ‘caught’ eating fish on a YouTube video (and subsequently attacked by her followers). She advocated a raw vegan diet and had almost 3 million followers. The important thing to learn from this story is WHY she started eating fish and eggs (I’m not here to celebrate her being ‘caught’!). It’s because her raw vegan diet was significantly affecting her health. She was profoundly anaemic, had stopped menstruating and had developed bowel bacterial overgrowth. A raw vegan diet is probably the worst diet for anybody. Not only do plants have less macro and micronutrients than animal products (e.g. fish, meat and eggs) but the proteins and micronutrients are less bioavailable than animal proteins. This means your body cannot absorb the nutrients as well. This is made worse when you’re eating uncooked plants your body absorbs even less readily. Most young, fit and healthy people do OK (just ok) with a vegan diet but it’s significantly inferior to an omnivore diet. In fact so inferior it’s actually dangerous at the extreme ends of age and during pregnancy. That’s why this poor girl was forced to eat eggs and fish so she could solve the health problems caused by her extreme vegan diet. She’s been attacked by many followers because of their ethical stance. But no one can really argue with the scientific stance that a vegan diet is not sustainable or safe and if you want to THRIVE you should eat meat, fish and/or eggs. #eatrealfood #yes2meat #vegandiet #fitbodydoc #doctorhud #getlean https://www.instagram.com/p/BvosFLPgm6D/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1945upo3s2pmq
