Small Preview of a New Story
Been working on a new story set in the Psycho-Pass universe. Got most of the plot figured out, now I just gotta write it...
Anyway, here’s a small preview of the Prologue and Chapter 1
PROLOGUE:
Humanity has always strived towards a perfect society. One of virtue, integrity, morality, equality;
A Utopia.
In pursuit of this Utopia, we created Sibyl, a system that through mind-mapping is not only able to accurately determine one's talents and pave an optimal path for each person that will lead to his or her happiness, but it is also able to find those who pose a threat to the system and neutralize them, or, if need be, eliminate them.
No single human life outweighs that of society.
No matter the cost, the system must survive.
The people of Japan have embraced this system, regardless of its totalitarian principles, for isn't it reasonable to have an objective AI rule the world and call the shots? Isn't it the only way to ensure decision making is devoid of emotions? In the words of Max Weber, the perfect bureaucrat.
But I know better.
I know the true nature of Sibyl, what it truly is.
Sibyl is not the prophecised computer god of the 22nd century. It is something far more sinister, far more... human.
Sibyl is a collective of the brains and minds of criminally asymptomatic individuals whose Crime Coefficient the system cannot measure. Such individuals represent not only the system's greatest weakness but also its greatest strength, its means of existence. They are the grey sheep and soon-to-be shepherds. Whenever an asymptomatic person is found, instead of being eliminated, he or she is added to the system and becomes a member of Sibyl's collective consciousness.
With each addition, Sybil grows.
Sibyl learns.
Sibyl adapts.
Sibyl evolves.
In a world consumed by famine, wars, political instability and poverty rates the likes of which humanity has never before faced, Japan stands as the sole beacon of order and prosperity, a society of abundance, political stability and inner peace, all thanks to Sibyl. Due to the triumphant results produced by Sybil, other countries have expressed interest in adopting it in hopes of receiving the salvation it offers. Slowly but surely, Sybil is to spread across the globe and become the sole ruler of a perfect world.
The consensus is that Sibyl is the sought-after Holy Grail of social sciences. It is the harbinger of the end of history, a system that is entirely objective and perfect in every way, and the only hope for humanity to achieve the desired Utopia.
However, those who believe this are in the wrong.
No system is perfect. Every system is flawed.
No system is eternal. Every system is finite.
No system is final. Every system is replaceable.
Sibyl is no exception.
Sibyl is not the future of society; people are the future of society, and in such a society, Sibyl has no place; no future.
One day, people will discover the truth about Sibyl, and when that day arrives, when Sibyl is exposed, we will be the ones to pass judgement on Sybil and decide for ourselves if we truly need Sybil.
And that day draws closer with each passing second.
I am Tsunemori Akane, Chief Inspector of the Public Safety Bureau's Criminal Investigation Division, and this is my story.
CHAPTER 1
Date: 3rd of October, 2118 Time: 18:54 PM Location: Tokyo; Public Safety Bureau HQ; Akane's Office
"Tsunemori-san!"
"Hmm?"
"Are you even listening to me?"
I sigh and take a sip of coffee, put the mug on the table, and continue typing the report.
"Yes. I'm listening."
"No you're not!" Mika yells and slams a hand on the desk, then leans forward and glares at me. "If you were listening to me, you wouldn't be typing on the computer!"
"My eyes are on the screen but my ears are on you," I reply. I'm not trying to sound rude or anything, but Mika should know by now that I prefer multi-tasking since it saves me a boatload of time. With the amount of work the bureau has been tasked with recently, from individual cases to risks of a psycho-hazard, every second spent doing one thing is a second not spent doing some other thing, and I can't afford to waste even a second. It isn't easy, typing one thing and listening to a completely different thing, but you get used to it over time, and it's a useful skill to have.
Mika growls and narrows her eyes at me, then straightens her posture and crosses her arms.
"Fine," she pouts. "Then what's your answer?"
"My answer?"
"Yes."
"Oh, sure. Go ahead. You have my permission."
Mika hesitates for a moment, then finally replies with a bitter "Thank you, boss" and leaves my office.
"Inspector? Are you sure that's a good idea? Letting a rookie like her off on her own?"
I can't help but laugh and flash a smile.
"Ginoza, wasn't I also a rookie once?"
"That was years ago. And besides-" he aims a glare at the door. "You sure as hell didn't have a nasty attitude like her!" Ginora says and leans back in his chair. "I could entrust you to deal with our clients without risking an outrage, but I'm not so sure about her."
"Mika isn't an idiot. She's a very smart and talented inspector. She'll know what to say."
"You're too nice for your own good, Tsunemori-san."
"Ginoza, there's no need for formality between us," I say with a smile. I may be his superior, but I'd like to think that we have more than just a superior-subordinate relationship. "And yeah, I'm well aware that Mika has... quite a temperament, shall we say. But she's still an excellent inspector and I think we're pretty lucky to have her on our team."
"Hmph!" Ginoza pouts, and I chuckle. "Either way, she's still a b-"
"Ginoza!" I say in a scolding manner, my finger raised. "That's no way to talk about your superior!"
"What? I was just about to say bigmouth," he says with a smirk, one that tells me that he definitely was not just going to say bigmouth. I narrow my eyes and shake my head, type another sentence of the report and shut down the computer. Afterwards, I stand up and stretch a bit, then walk over to the door.
"Going somewhere, inspector?"
