As a Tom King Hater(TM) I am surprised how much the changes of the supergirl movie bother me. It’s like the most basic misunderstanding of the themes of Woman of Tomorrow. Like, this movie fucking BETRAYS the comic it adapts. More than “Rorschach is the good guy” in Watchmen. Putting the spoiler bit under the cut
Okay so part of the book is growing beyond her trauma. Krypto (in the book) was never in danger. This was a quest to stop Krem nominally but also to help Ruthye heal. Now that Kara kills Krem, it’s not growing beyond trauma. It’s “I don’t want this girl to end up like me.”
This implicitly says Kara can’t or won’t grow beyond her trauma. She’s damaged goods and so she keeps being damaged goods for the sake of all the undamaged.
Also Krem was an evil government official. Like a regular guy who did evil things because his institutional power let him play with lives. The brigands brought him on because they were surprised this rando guy was so fucked up. It’s like if Brian Thompson was portrayed as Thanos.
Also the comic has a lot of beautiful psychedelic art. NONE of that is in the movie. No space dragon, no phoenix, etc. Krem now looks like a rejected mad max character and has superpowers. I hate to say it, but this looked like a man of steel sequel (if they had the whimsy to allow a cartoon dog).
