Celebrating the Fourth of July
Celebrating the Fourth of July
Normally, I’m always so excited for this holiday that celebrates the birth of our country. And I’ll be honest in saying a lot of that has to do with the fact that it’s my birthday, too, and, as a child, I always thought it was all about me. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. Kinda self-centered, but don’t try to tell me you weren’t that way as a kid. We tend to be focused on ourselves until about age 10…

Brian Stokes Mitchell has performed "Flag Song," cut from Assassins, in concert. Now it looks like the song will get its first official recording on his forthcoming album, PLAYS WITH MUSIC, coming November 29 from Broadway Records.

Have you ever noticed that the people who say "god bless the US" and praise the flag Are the ones who hurry to belittle anyone...
The destructive potential of the American Dream Originally published in The Sondheim Review. Stephen Sondheim has distanced himself from the practice of reusing discarded songs from old shows when ...
The second piece I have in the Spring 2016 issue of The Sondheim Review is an analysis of what we might derive from Sondheim’s use of the same melody (the “Flag Song”) in both Assassins and Road Show. I find this connection fascinating, and the most challenging thing about writing this article was making it short enough for the magazine format. I could go on and on about these songs and the way they link the two shows. (I didn’t even get to mention that William Parry, who introduced the song in Road Show, was in the original cast of Assassins!)
I hope I am doing this right. Tumblr is quite confusing.
This is Gayle Hansen-Johnson, she is a member of my tribe (Panamint Shoshone). I believe she lives out on Mono Lake these days as I have not seen her in quite some time.
This is an old video but you can hear her singing the Flag Song here. This song is very old, it dates back to the beginning of the Ghost Dance Era when Shoshone were just starting to become proud to call themselves American and we were thinking that maybe peace loomed on the horizon.
Ms. Hansen-Johnson is descended from Beshup who was one of the only known children to survive the Bear River ambush, the other child was Maggie Reed.
It was very pleasant to find this video. I hope Ms. Hansen-Johnson is doing well for herself.
