The first time she ever attempted to play a musical instrument had ended in a horrible failure. Reading music was like trying to read an alien language; and for the first few months of her schooling in the musical arts, an alien language was what it seemed to be. For some reason, her mind just couldn’t wrap itself around tiny symbols actually representing the sounds the keys of the piano made when little fingers pressed down on them.
Try and try as she might, she just couldn’t make pretty sounds like the music her parents played on the radio every night; and by the time her parents finally hired a piano tutor to help their daughter, the child had had just about enough of it. After much convincing however, Serena had reluctantly relented to giving the piano another try.
For two days a week for the next three weeks, Serena spent her afternoons learning how to read music scores with her tutor. It was surprising that with just a little bit of guidance, things didn’t seem at all as hard as they had been — and soon she even learned which notes belonged to which piano key.
By the end of her sixth week, she was able to play 'Sparkle Little Beautifly' all by herself — and even went as far as to hold a mini concert for her parents. The sense of accomplishment she felt carried her through each lesson, helping her continue to improve until she was skilled enough to play even the professional songs she heard on the radio.
