“I wish that I was in a place where I could try that with you. But I feel so hollowed out inside right now. I feel more broken than I’ve ever felt in my life.”
I dunno about everyone else, but watching the finale for Flash (couple days ago, but whatever), one of the questions I had as they were filming Harry and Jesse leaving, was: so...how are they gonna bring Tom Cavanagh back for season 3?
Not kidding. I have a terrible mind. Deal with it.
But, in all honesty, they’re not gonna wanna get rid of him, but his characters just keep getting killed or written off. So I’ve been talking with my dad, who started coming up with theories, and I did as well.
Basically, it all looks very Flashpoint Paradox.
In short, in the animated movie (and the comic, but I’ve only watched it so far - gotta still get around to reading it) Barry goes back and saves his mother, ends up back in what he thinks is his present time, and realizes how badly he totally fucked everything up (to put it lightly). Him not being the Flash has major implications with the rest of the Justice League members - notably, Bruce Wayne is dead, and his father Thomas Wayne has taken on the mantle of Batman to honor his wife and son. Once Barry figured out how messed up things were, he gets the help of Thomas Wayne to turn him back into the Flash, so he can go back and restore the original timeline. (There’s also a run-in with Thawne, but I’m not gonna go into that).
Anyway, problem is, Flash doesn’t have access to all those characters yet, and Thomas Wayne is pretty big in this entire thing.
But what if it doesn’t matter? This is where the question about Tom Cavanagh comes in. Pretty much just replace Thomas Wayne with Harrison Wells (who, in this case, would be something of a mix between past Earth-1 Wells and Earth-2 Harry). They get to keep him on, which I’m sure they wanna do, and it solves that problem of not having access to characters. Gives Barry a way to get back home, and a familiar face (sort of) to work with.
Plus, there could be some interesting character arc stuff for Wells, if Barry were to tell him that he’s dead in Barry’s timeline. That’d be something hard to come to grips with.
And Citizen Cold (I’m trash, come on), as well as other formerly dead characters (Eddie! Ronnie! Laurel!) Actually...Citizen Cold would fit interestingly well, considering Wentworth’s new contract, giving him a bigger role in Flash as well as a sizable role in Legends, despite not being a regular (if I recall correctly). And playing Central City’s hero is no small feat - aside from the fact I can’t imagine Len - hero, villain, antihero, any version of him - would wanna be left out of the loop when weird shit like this goes down.
Probably could be used to reverse some deaths, like Len’s, considering Flashpoint in the comics didn’t revert everything perfectly, I think.
Granted, I’m pretty sure this won’t last long enough to seep into the other shows. Comic book fans are used to this weird alternate universe jumping stuff, but I don’t think TV-show-only audiences would be as receptive to that. Flash fans, maybe, but I imagine it’d be pretty confusing if you only watched Arrow or Legends. Besides, I know Legends has already set up for something of their season 2 arc, so the writers can’t just jump into an alternate universe without explanation in order to fit with Flash. (Can’t speak for Arrow, but I imagine it’s the same?)
(And then, because I’m curious as to how Len would survive, I’d guess that after the Flashpoint arc is done, that’d let him hop back over to Legends afterwards for the actual retcon, which would be somehow linked to Flashpoint? I dunno yet. Haven’t thought through that quite yet. But it fits contractually, right?)
Anyway, that was my thinking for the day. Totally random but oh well.
The Flash: *Barry Allen fucks up the timeline (again), removing (at least temporarily) two seasons of character, plot, and relationship developments*
Fans:
I talk about how I think the show can deal with that cliffhanger!
