Hey guys I wrote a piece for this writing challenge if y’all wanna check it out! (I’ll also post here later)
Why Not Be A Tiger
The cloud overhead is a tiger with its mouth open. It is--until it isn’t. Until it is just a mass of white, of, what looks to me, down here, lying in a hammock in my backyard, like unspun fleece. Not fleece though, not actually anything approximating softness or even a surface, not anything you can put your hands on or your arms around. Not anything that can be anything up close. Just vapor.
Certainly not a tiger with his mouth split open in a roar.
Not a tiger. But for a moment be a tiger.
Fine
At the gym when I looked up from the bike I was furiously pedaling a woman was on the ground, prone, in the aisle. A staff person knelt beside her. When the EMTs arrived she insisted on standing up, on walking. “I’m fine. Let me go.” She stumbled in front of the bike where I had been pedaling but less furiously, trying not to watch but aware. “I’m fine. I’m fine.” Clearly not fine but claiming it, trying to make it true.
Clearly not fine. She finally agreed to sit down.
Clearly not fine. I stopped pedaling.
Reconjured Aesthetics
Tonight as I was leaving the university where I tutor writing part-time, I ran into another writing tutor. We stood in the dark parking lot and talked about the session I’d just concluded. He offered a student story in return.
On the drive home I realized that he reminds me of someone. Of one of my best friends from college. Same sort of look, same build. Same sort of way of speaking. The college friend and I have swapped many stories. In the dark, this college is so like ours. This midwestern autumn night, I have lived before.
