Sounds cool, eh? There are a variety of software that can act as a plugin, once they are compiled for the target platforms (e.g desktop player, Android or iOS):

Gideros weekly update

We have been very busy for the last few days. It was really hectic in the sense that there has been lots of (small) feature requests that could easily go into the Gideros Studio. This is a list of them:

Retina display option in IDE - you can now disable or enable retina display option for iOS devices.

Gideros Scene Manager

One of Gideros Studio's benefits include easy to use and understand API, which has just exceeded 470 functions and classes. We are gearing towards a complete mobile development environment, bundled with an easy-to-use IDE and SDK. Our forum is constantly improving and filling up with questions and answers, and one of the most exciting things we encounter is the fast evolution of sample applications and games built with Gideros Studio. We are really thrilled! Devs, keep up the good work! To help Giderans (short form of Gideros devs) easily code their applications, we are releasing a sample "Gideros Scene Manager". This is a collection of Lua files including several examples of how to manage your scene. "Where would I need it?" you may ask. Let's explain. In most applications and games, you have different scenes (e.g menu, scoreboard, game screen, platform, inventory screen, end-of-game screen etc). You need to put your sprites in each of these screens, and one way or another, provide a transition method between them. Since you are building your next-award-winning-game, these transitions cannot be left without an effect. Gideros Scene Manager comes handy at this stage, when you easily want your scenes pass one after another. For example, in an e-book, you code all of your pages and then allow Gideros Scene Manager to show each scene. Transitions between scenes are not static, you can use many transitions between them. Transitions include fade, move, over and flip, and dualities of these transitions, like move with fade, over with fade, crossfade, flip with shade, flip with fade etc. You do not have to bother with any of these transition methods. Last but not least, here is a list of scene transitions used in Gideros Scene Manager. Gideros IDE = productivity, here's how

Using an editor and then switching to another always creates some puzzle and confusion the first time. This is like an out-of-box experience, when you download a new product and decide to use it or not, based on your first 30-second to 30-minute experience. Here comes usability and user experience, in another words, effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction.

  We want Gideros Studio IDE the hands-down best platform independent IDE around to build mobile applications for iOS and Android. If our editor is not usable, then our vision would totally be useless. Therefore we decided to make Gideros Studio editor more comfortable and usable for end users, and wanted to start with shortcuts. While the Windows port was successful in terms of keyboard shortcuts, there has been some confusion in the forum, and we wanted to take care of this immediately (as usual ;-))

  This is a list of how Gideros Studio editor behaves under Mac OS X:

    (command button) command + left: start of line command + right: end of line command + up: beginning of document command + down: end of document command + backspace: delete line to the left (option button) option + left: move to next word on the left (case insensitive) option + right: move to next word on the right (case insensitive) option + backspace: delete word to left (control button) control + left: move to next word on the left (case sensitive) control + right: move to next word on the right (case sensitive) control + up: page up control + down: page down control + backspace: delete word to left (same with option + backspace)

  Now Gideros Studio IDE is much more stronger, and resembles the behaviour found in many good general editors out there, like TextMate, TextEdit and Xcode. The list above is in fact is by no means complete - just press shift and your action will select the corresponding word, line or page (excluding command/option/control + backspace)

    We strive hard towards a more emotional user experience, since a developer interacts with the IDE more than any other applications stored in his computer. All temporal levels of user experience (momentary, episodic, and long-term) are important to us, ensuring a healthy overall user experience and happy Gideros Studio users!

Gideros weekly update for October, 3

This blog post is related to weekly update of what we are up to - hope you'll like - here it comes!

  Moved to a new server

We have been suffering from network issues for a long time, and we decided to move to a new provider in US. Probably you already have noticed how fast our web page is, since our servers are much healthier and faster now.

  Fresh forum software

We can admit that we never were satisfied with our current phpbb3 forum installation: configuration is cumbersome, spam prevention needs lots of tweaking, and threaded discussions are not easy to follow. For some time there has been a debate among us which forum software to implement, and found out Vanilla Forums - which is really clean, fresh, easy to install, use and administer. Well, enter our new forum and experience yourself! :)

  Gideros Studio now exports to Android

As you can see from the image below, you'll have the option to export to Eclipse project - a testament to our commitment for openness. As you know, it's possible to export your iOS project to Xcode3, and make modifications on your application. This is again true for Android apps - for the 2011.9 final version,  it'll be possible to export to Eclipse, so you can customize your own application.

    Soon after, we'll provide a method to "generate an Android APK file" so you don't have to open Eclipse and try to build your application!

  Other Gideros Studio 2011.9 goodies

There are some minor feature addons to Gideros Studio 2011.9 which do not break compatibility with 2011.6:

There's an "Export assets only" function, which overrides your exported Xcode3 / Java code if you don't click. In case you made any changes to your exported code, checking this option will not override any files except assets (e.g sound and graphic files)

The toolbar now has an "Open Project" icon, which opens a project. This is much faster than clicking on File menu, and then Open.

Gtween animation library has been ported to Gideros Studio. For more information about this library, see GTween home page.

The fonts in popup bar in Mac OS X were small (as requested in our forum), and they are now bigger

Releasing Gideros Studio 2011.9 beta!

We are really working hard for our next BIG release, and this beta perfectly shows how Gideros 2011.9 final will look like. Most of the time has been spent on coding, validation and testing (again and again). This always ensures that we are always up to date, (mostly) bugfree, and follow our users requirements. Having said that, this version will be a beta - or more than a technology preview- of what we have, including both the IDE and SDK, so you can download and test freely.

  Most notable changes between Gideros 2011.6 and 2011.9 (beta) are as follows:

Android, hardware, Flurry and more

As mentioned in our roadmap, we are working hard for our next release. The most important part of this release is Android, which will include support for many functions (if not all) in our core API set. There are some functions which are specific to iOS, and these will be replaced with Android counterparts.

  In fact adding a new platform to Gideros Studio is straightforward - it took 7 days, not weeks or months to add the Android platform and port a small iOS game. Thanks to the extensibility of the underlying infrastructure, adding support for a mobile device is relatively easy.

  More hardware: Gyro, compass and GPS

  When we have spare time, we always try to find new ideas to make Gideros Studio more suitable for developers. We recently added gyro, compass and GPS support to core Gideros API (accelerometer functions are present in current release). It was really a fun process to get information about all these hardware, try to understand the differences and similarities, and build a layer on top of Gideros Studio so you can easily reach functions using Lua. We hope you'll build games using our IDE with ease and fun, just like we did! :)

    Flurry analytics added

  We just unveiled a new class, flurry, to represent our newest analytics package built on Flurry. There are several functions in this module:

  - flurry.isAvailable: Returns `true` if Flurry is available for this platform. Currently, Flurry is available on iOS and Android (which will be ready at the end of August).

- flurry.startSession: Starts the Flurry session with your API key. This key can be obtained from www.flurry.com

- flurry.logEvent:Use this function to count the number of times certain events happen during a session of your application and to pass dynamic parametersto be recorded with that event.

- flurry.endTimedEvent:Use this function to end timed event before app exists, otherwise timed events automatically end when app exists.

  This support will come with our next version.

  All Box2D functions implemented

  Our main aim with Box2D is to port all functions to Lua, allowing Gideros Mobile developers to use Box2D functions properly. This is a huge step towards our complete physics API. Atilim and Deniz recently have implemented all Box2D functions, so you can seamlessly generate perfect physics worlds using Gideros Studio. Looking at the Box2D documentation, you may get an idea of how long it took us to catch up with this marvellous engine.

  Forum approaching

  2 weeks ago we opened our DevCenter (wiki), and now it's time for a developer forum. Very soon, we'll open our forum and you will be able to ask your questions directly to our open community.
