Strictly speaking the off campus housing he was trying to haul boxes into was supposed to just be for upperclassman but he’d been granted an exception due to extraordinary circumstances, which Jake was pretty sure just meant the family lawyer had done their thing and made sure that he and his sister had a place to stay that was close enough to both the campus and the nearby high school that they wouldn’t struggle with that as much. He didn’t really care how it had been done just so long as his sister didn’t have to get shipped off to some distant relative they didn’t know and wasn’t put into the system when he was there and willing to take care of her. 

Moving in the middle of the semester meant they drew curious looks as they carried in boxes, bickering as they passed about what was going where and who was getting the (slightly) bigger bedroom. Most of the students that seemed curious about them didn’t say anything, something Jake was grateful for, letting him focus on the work and not think about the funeral or the fact he and his sister were now orphans or the mountain of homework he would now have to try to plow through while unpacking everything to make sure he didn’t get any further behind in his classes. 

He was so caught up in his thoughts that he almost ran into a person coming out of the apartment next to theirs, only just pulling up short to keep from crashing into him. “Shit, sorry.” 

It wasn’t until the words were out of his mouth that he actually looked at the person he’d almost run into, taking in the way he seemed both concerned and amused at the almost collision, a hand held out as if to catch him if they would’ve actually crashed into each other. 

The concern melted away into something playful as he surveyed Jake, “You good?”

“Yeah, I’m good.” Jake paused for a moment before holding out a hand, trying to remember the manners his mother had drilled into his brain. “I’m Jake.”

There was a smile as he took Jake’s hand. “Bradley. It’s nice to meet you.”

Such a simple phrase but the fact he seemed to actually mean it brought a faint blush to Jake’s cheeks as he tried to focus on anything over than the warmth those simple gestures brought him. “Yeah.. um, my sister and I are your new neighbors.”

“If you guys need anything…” 

The open ended offer made Jake smile and nod, muttering out a promise that he would reach out before his sister passed by, yanking his shirt to tug him back into action, their antics drawing a laugh from Bradley. 

Moving into a new apartment in the middle of the semester sucked but maybe things would be alright for them.
