‘Flatwound Strings’ is a straight-up declaration of love, careening joyfully between soothing harmonies and wide-eyed arena choruses. i’ve had a fender bass vi for some years now. tried to get to terms with it, but so far i got only as close as it was originally meant, tuned low-e to high-e, with flatwound strings, and a hardtail bridge instead of the tremolo arm.

the (most common) end of story was, the low-e was so low (tuned exactly as low-e on bass, that is), that any chord should have better kept within the highest five remaining strings, in order to hear the notes it was made of.

the original roundwound strings, which fender sold separately, too, for a period of time, were gauged .084 to .024, which made the low-e a tad too soft, and it always came out quite wobbly, sloppy, mucky.

which is why i had switched to a flatwound set that labella makes especially for bass vi, provided you can find it (and, within europe, it proved to be quite a treasure hunt). it cost like four regular sets in the end, but it made the low-e a tad more usable, though more... plompy, of course, in typical flatwound style.

i’ve read here and there comments from bass vi owners and players who all praised the labella set because it healed the low-e handicap of the original set, thanks to its higher tension (at .095 - .026), and they were indeed right at it.

but, to my own playing taste, it still didn’t provide much more in terms of chord flexibility, bass vi being still moored to its highest five strings for that task. so i kept thinking it would have made sense to step all strings up a notch on the nut and bridge, in a manner of speaking, tune it low-a to high-a, a fourth above standard, starting from the original fifth string.

and i couldn’t do it for quite a long time, because the missing string, a high-a gauged anywhere below .020, though quite common in most electric guitar sets, doesn’t reach the tuning peg of a 30″ scale neck, with the added fare of a really long headstock, and the span of strings behind the bridge into the tremolo unit: plain .020 strings are guitar strings, and guitars require a much shorter length of string that this.

fast forward to yesterday evening.

i strung a silent/travel acoustic guitar by yamaha with the last roundwound set remained in my thomastik strings stash, and realized at the b string, .018, that it appeared to be seemingly longer than my usual elixirs. but, you know the saying, eye just hints, tape must measure, and at least twice, before you cut.

so before i finished stringing the yamaha silent/travel one, i placed the .018 string over bass vi, and had proof that eye was right, it was not only longer than my usual elixirs, but long enough to grip the tuning peg (drilled) shaft, while reaching ‘til the tailpiece, too.

i fished around my lab room for a long forgotten original fender bass vi string set, which i had parked inside a box with the original tremolo tailpiece that couldn’t accomodate the labella highest gauge strings’ ball end. it was worth trying it up again, with the original strings, only a fourth above the original plan.
