32. “I think I’m in love with you and I’m terrified.”

My hands trembled against the cardboard cup of coffee. Whether it was lack of sleep or the fact that I was paralyzed with fear, I couldn’t tell anymore. Everything was blurred together. Everything was turning grey. 

I turned to look out the window and saw the rain hitting the glass, the outside world was no longer sharp and clear. Now, it was just a mess of shapes and colours with no form. My stomach twisted. 

The sound of a bell ringing and the door opening, brought my thoughts back to earth with a crash. I turned, feeling alarmed and saw him. His brown, curly hair was dripping and he had a giant smile plastered to his face, despite the down pour. He glanced around, and as he saw me, his eyes brightened and his smile widened. He was what took the grey away and brought the colour back into my world. He practically bound over to sit with me. 

My heart ached as I tried to steady my hand and show off a normal smile, though it wouldn’t come. He sat across from me in the booth and nodded. 

“Hi, Mark!” His sweet voice giving me butterflies. “Hey, Donghyuk…” I mumbled and took a giant gulp of the burning liquid hoping to drown those damn butterflies. “What’s up? Couldn’t we have met at my place? Or even yours? Why all the secrecy? What did you want to talk about? Are you ok?” 

There were so many questions and I felt my tongue go numb. Just being with him was too much for my brain to process. I’d rehearsed this. I was going to tell him. I couldn’t go on living if I kept waking every night, having these nightmares about him leaving me… I needed to tell him. I needed to let it out. And if he left after I told him, then so be it. That would be on me. But I couldn’t go mad by keeping it a secret anymore. I just couldn’t… 

“Do you know what’s good here? I don’t really like coffee-”“I know-” The words slipped out before you could stop them.“You know?” He cocked his head, raising his eyebrows, but then smirked, “I know, you know. You just love me too much.” He teased.

I tried to ignore the part of my mind that yelled out a “yes,” and tried to focus on telling him what was on my mind. 

“Donghyuk-”“Right, so, I think I’ll get a hot chocolate. But if it’s gross you’re going to have to drink it for me.”“Donghyuk.”“But… I’d feel bad so maybe I’ll get something else.”“Donghyuk!” 

He looked up, perplexed. 

“Why’re you yelling?”“Y-You’re not listening!”“Jeez, Mark… I’m listening. What’s up?”“I-I… I need to tell you something.”“You didn’t steal my chocolate bar again did you? I told-”“I think I’m in love with you!” I yelled out. 

His eyes widened and he blinked, confused. My heart started ache at a sharp, quickened pace. 

“A-And I’m terrified…” I whispered out.

He looked so confused. My eyes began to blur with tears just as the rain outside was blurring the world. Who knew love was supposed to be this painful? Who knew I was going to end up in this situation?

“I-I-… I understand if you don’t feel the same way. I just had to tell you. I’ll be going now.” I stood up, trembling from head to toe. “Mark…” He said softly, making a sob emit from me, “Sit down, please…”

Shaking and too confused to do other wise, I sat. I hugged myself and let quiet sobs break from me. But a sudden hand around my shoulder and the soft, sweet scent of him made all the sadness wash away. I leaned into him, letting the sobs take over me, forgetting that I was in a public establishment. 

“Mark, people will see.” He laughed, softly. I continued to cry he hummed softly, “Mark, don’t cry… Please… You don’t have a reason to.”“W-What?” I said, through a very stuffy nose, looking at him.

His face was so close I could see little tears that had formed, clinging to his eye lashes. 

“You shouldn’t be crying… I know it’s hard… Keeping those feelings inside.”“How would you know…” I scoffed, feeling sadness and bitterness seep into the cracks of my heart.“Because, you idiot,” He laughed, cupping my cheek and resting his forehead against mine, “I think I’m in love with you too.”
