Cirrus Sky Sunset Sacramento Wildlife Refuge by John William Hammond World of Wonder Photos/Music Via Flickr: Sacramento NWR is one of the five refuges in the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex. It is part of the Pacific flyway for many species of birds including geese, ducks, and a variety of cranes.. Visitor opportunities at Sacramento NWR include a Visitor Center, an auto tour, a year-round walking trail, a seasonal walking trail, a viewing platform, 2 photography blinds (by reservation), and hunting within the designated hunt area. It is about 2 hours north of the San Francisco Bay area and an hour from Sacramento. Best bird viewing times are sunset and sometimes mornings. In past years over a million birds rest up here before continuing there north and south migration journeys.
